Ways to Style Dungarees: With 70s Style Shirt, Boots and Hair | Not Dressed As Lamb, Style Over 40

It’s no secret I love dungarees, and it’s no secret I love 70s style. Time to merge the two.

Not only that but I’ve finally broken the chain of orange, brown and red outfits (at LAST, woop)!

Full-on casual today, though instead of the sneakers I wore for most of the day with this outfit I’ve shown the mahoosive platform boots I wore with the outfit for about an hour. Nowhere to go these days calls for wearing your fave accessories (or even full outfits) round the house.

70s style makes me happy, and dungarees are just the best thing ever for weekend wear… I even did a bit of gardening in them.

Last time I wore these ones [on the blog]? Way back in September 2017 (worth checking out for the lovely photos of Riley)!

Shop the look:

This outfit is pretty much just the three main pieces: dungarees, shirt and boots. (I’ve shown 5 other ways to wear dungarees from my archives at the end of the post if you want to check them out.) I KNOW that dungarees are a bit Marmite [love ’em or hate ’em], but I’m in the love camp. And I loved mine even more with my 70s style (but not actually vintage) shirt which I last wore here.

Throw in those crazy platform boots (worn earlier this year here, here and here) and my current favourite hairstyle of dead straight with a centre parting and I feel like an extra from a Robert Redford drama/thriller movie.

BTW if it’s vintage-looking shirts or blouses you’re after, I can’t recommend Hawes & Curtis enough. They have a huge selection of vintage style shirts and blouses, some even with 70s-style collars. I bought my red patterned blouse in their last winter sale, and the prices are very reasonable (great sales!) and the styling is spot-on. I could EASILY buy five shirts straight away from their current collection, no problem…!

What’s YOUR favourite decade for style? Any other die-hard fans of “the decade that style forgot” (the 70s) out there? Comment below…

Stay safe, XOXO

P.S. Check out this comment left way back in 2014 on a post where I wore my grey dungarees… these comments make me LOL with their schoolteacher-y tone, as if I’m being told off…!!

“No to the dungerees [sic]! You’re gorgeous and you look amazing in pretty much everything, but even you look better in clothes that aren’t dungerees [sic]. You could get the same effect with a pair of chinos and the sweater, jacket etc. And be far more comfy in a much more flattering style. Still, whatever floats your boat, I guess”

As you can imagine I didn’t give a sh*t then, and I don’t give a sh*t now 😀

I too love overalls, it’s what we call them in the US. I wear them all different ways and will until the day I can’t. My grown daughter does too! It’s my in my feel good place and we all know we surely need that in this world…..

I love the 70’s and adore this entire look but I’ve never owned a pair of dungarees! Can you believe that? Weird right?
No idea why that is, so I’m off to check my favourite secondhand sites to find a pair.
Thanks for the inspo Catherine, I bet these will work well throughout Autumn and Winter too!

The whole outfit looks great on you. I gave up on dungarees a long time ago – after I ended up with one of my straps in the loo

Love the styling of the dungarees…. and the 70s style shirt in particular. ….what a print! Lovely to see the 2017 post with your boy Riley in his yellow bandana . You’re right…Hawes & Curtis have some great prints and I feel I really should try one out, so thanks for that !!

Looking good in your dungarees ( we call them overalls in Aus) , with that great 70s style shirt. Those platform boots do take me back. Many thanks for hosting.

Thanks Cheryl! We call what mechanics wear (the full thing with sleeves) overalls… now I’m wondering what you call [what we call] overalls?!! Boilet suits maybe? We generally call them boiler suits when they’re worn as a fashun thing by women, and overalls when worn to do manual work in! 😉

I love dungarees, my favourite pair was from a brand called Tween and I went Interailing round Europe in them, those were some pants and wonderful memories brought back by this post of yours. I think I looked very stylish then, wearing them with an Armorlux Breton T-shirt that lasted as long as these particular dungarees. You look like you really enjoy wearing yours, too. Great post!!

Mona they sound like the perfect item of clothing to go Interailing in!! And thank you xx

  19. 20 October 2020 / 9:27 pm

I love this look, and really wish I could pull it off. Alas, I have never found a pair of overalls (what we call them in the states) that don’t make me feel like a dumpty dwarf.

    • Catherine

      6 November 2020 / 1:05 pm

I will admit they’re not necessarily the most flattering item of clothing, Ashton… but then I love them, so who cares? It’s all about how you feel in them, and it sounds like they’re just not you. Maybe jumpsuits are for you as they usually have a waist…?

  20. 20 October 2020 / 7:32 pm

Catherine, I literally cannot love this outfit any more! I have 3 different pairs of overalls and I have been trying to find new ways to style them. I might be copying this fun look soon! And I have been wearing my hair super straight with a middle part, too, and I am really digging it! I like the hippie 70’s vibe of it. As for fashion eras, I really do love them all equally and differently and love even more to combine them together!

This s such a great look on you – very cool! You look so happy and chilled in these pics. I did have a similar pair along with a dark brown pair of those boots back in the day! The ’70s is one of my favourite era’s. xx

  22. 20 October 2020 / 5:45 pm

The dungarees look fabulous on you Catherine! I’ve never owned a pair, although I’ve been tempted lately. I’m a big fan of Hawes & Curtis shirts – I once found three in a charity shop, all in my size and priced at £3.75 each! Needless to say I promptly bought them all!

I love dungarees, but never own a pair!!!! Well maybe when I was small, I seem to remember a pic of me in kindergarten with a pair or beige corduroy dungarees !!!!
I have yet to find a pair of dungarees or jumpsuit that fit me correctly. I have a very long torso and short legs so nothing “whole body” seems to fit.
Love the 70s vibe though!!! I will kill myself in such a platform!!!
My aunt gave me a couple of silky 70s vibes blouses when I was in high school and I worn them to death!!! I felt so “groovy” but at the same time put together!!! Love them!!!
I need more silk in my wardrobe!!!
You look stunning as usual!!! I am this close To dyeing my hair rose gold, but thinking of doing it with Overtone….

Thanks Pilar my lovely…! I’m a long-body-short-legs girl as well, the dungarees help with that as you can make the straps as loose as you need…!

  25. 20 October 2020 / 5:21 pm

    Hi Catherine
Love the print of your top, very 70s as well! And I love that you parted your hair down the middle, looks great! Those overalls look great on you with those platform boots! Platforms are comfortable. and they look fun!

Thank you so much Jess – I’ll call this my lockdown hairstyle, it was nice to get it cut (trimmed) for the first time after lockdown and be actually aiming for this style!

  26. 20 October 2020 / 5:07 pm

NEVER too old for jeans!….. and I also love the ’70s look! My 71st birthday is tomorrow (posted photo of 70th birthday w/daughters & we’re all in tight jeans) ~ and I wear some sort of jeans nearly every day (but, of course, I do live in Texas!). My grandmother (the most glamorous woman I ever met ~ a cashmere sweater/pearls & Shalimar icon) said the way you could tell a woman with style was when she could wear a “schmata”(sp? ~ “rag”), and still look like a million dollars!
