Out of all the Fashion Bloggers You Should Know posts I’ve published this year, this is the one I’ve been looking forward to the most: Over 40 fashion bloggers are where it’s at –
I have to say that, being one myself! Some of these ladies I’ve featured before, but not in as much detail.
I promised in yesterday’s post – The Ultimate Resource Guide for the Over 40 Blogger (and Over 40 Woman) – that I would publish this today, and here it is. There were so many I had to leave out (I’m really sorry I couldn’t add everyone) but I decided to stick to my usual number of 8 bloggers for this post. If you want to see a comprehensive list of over 40 blogs visit Sylvia’s 40+ Style Blogger Community page. And don’t forget when we say “over 40” we (I) mean exactly that – it’s not the same as “in their forties”. Some of these ladies are in their fifties, but it doesn’t matter who is and who isn’t: being fabulous is what made me feature them.
What struck me when compiling this post was not only how inspiring these women are, but how extraordinarily varied their style is. They prove that we get to know what suits us more and more as we get older, and boy do they wear what they like – and wear it with gusto. Remember my only rule:
THERE ARE NO RULES.
(I do have a thing for being occasion appropriate rather than age appropriate, but that’s just common sense and good manners.)
If you were worried you might fade into the background as you get older then take a look at these gorgeous, stylish women – and prepare to be inspired!
1. Mama in Heels
Deciding to feature Janise made my job of choosing just three of her outfits very, very difficult – she’s incredibly well put together and achingly stylish. She’s very on trend but knows what suits her small frame and doesn’t wear fashionable pieces for the sake of it. She always has at least one “wow” piece in her arsenal; whether that be a marabou feather-trimmed dress or a statement clutch, I love her effortless style.
2. You Look Fab
Another blogger making it look easy is Angie – she’s got the funkiest blond crop ever and wears even funkier glasses. She favours very bold, graphic pieces, and for someone who doesn’t have a long girly mane of hair I’ve noticed she wears a lot of pink, making it edgy rather than sickly sweet. At first her choices seem quite classic, but they’re beautifully tailored and always modern.
3. Lady of Style
I am in awe of Annette every time I visit her blog: She makes me regularly call the husband to “come and see how amazing Annette looks today”. The leather trousers and poncho outfit says it all – I can’t even begin to describe how cool it is. She always remains utterly ladylike but takes risks which pay off every time. Plus she has the most awesome, gorgeous glint in her eye… Visit her blog and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
4. What Lizzy Loves
Liz, or “Lovely Liz” as I always call her, could easily pass for under 30 (how is she in her 40s?). She and I have met several times (first at the Fever London shoot); she is statuesque, naturally beautiful and the nicest person you could hope to meet. Contrary to what the the outfits above suggest she does also wear trousers and jeans, but she’s got such an amazing pair of legs and suits a shift-style mini dress so well that I found myself drawn to these three for the feature. A perfect example of knowing what suits her and having a signature style.
5. The Rich Life in Wine Country
Another statuesque beauty, Adrienne knows her to dress her tall frame with just a little bit of edge, a nod to the odd current trend and an awful lot of style. She can wear culottes without looking like she’s been cut in two and knows how to keep the rest of the outfit chic and simple. But her best accessories are her hair and her smile – those two things are always a winner for me, whoever the blogger is.
6. 40+ Style
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – Sylvia makes getting dressed stylishly look easy. She seems to have a knack for putting together simple, easy-to-wear outfits in a bold palette with subtle but modern accessories. She’s Dutch but lives in the heat of Singapore, so she’s often in bright white with punches of colour. No earthy autumnal tones here, it’s perpetually summer in her wardrobe so her style is fun and cheerful as well as sleek.
7. Highland Fashionista
As her blog name suggests, Kristin lives in the Scottish Highlands, but unlike Sylvia she has crazy cold, wet weather to cope with for much of the year. Her ballsy wardrobe choices are both eclectic and designed to show off her amazingly athletic legs – and quite rightly too. Kristin is a rare 40-something woman: one who has bravely decided to stop dyeing her hair and let her beautiful, natural silver colour come through. When paired with funky graphic t-shirts and wild prints it’s anything but ageing on her.
8. Mis Papelicos
One of the best known (and most loved) over 40 bloggers, Sacramento is one of the most sociable, friendly and fabulously-dressed bloggers out there. She is always (without fail) in a dress or skirt, and she never holds back on the pattern mixing or accessories, either making her own or sourcing them from vintage or thrift shops. Her creativity knows no bounds, and if you get a chance to see her sans sunglasses, check out her lovely eyes… they are beautiful.
So that’s my Top 8 Over 40 style bloggers – I still have many more categories to go through so my list of different groups of bloggers is far from exhausted… You never know, male bloggers may make an appearance soon!
P.S. Don’t forget to check out my Ultimate Resource Guide for the Over 40 Blogger (and Over 40 Woman) post published yesterday…!
Could you have a size 14 woman over 40?
Or is that 90% of American women just supposed to go to Walmart mumus!
Author
Hi Ann, if you meant that I should have included a blogger who is a size 14 (or above?), do remember that I wrote this post nearly four years ago, and at the time these were the over 40 bloggers I knew. Also Liz of What Lizzy Loves was a size 12 at the time (I only know this because she’s since become a good friend of mine), so I think sometimes it’s easy to assume people are a certain size when they’re not… you could argue that a couple of the other bloggers featured have more curves than Liz so might be a different size? But analysing specific women’s actual sizes is not something I want to get into…!
Since then I’ve written five more posts featuring over 40 bloggers of all shapes and sizes (you’ll find them in Featured Bloggers under the Categories menu):

I also wrote a post dedicated to mid-size bloggers (which includes some older bloggers but to be honest I don’t think age has anything to do with whether you can take inspiration from their style!):

Hope that helps! x
P.S. Don’t know what Walmart Mumus (Mums?) is and I don’t really get what you were suggesting… I didn’t dictate where anyone should shop in relation to their size in this post! I’m British and have a larger British following than American so my suggestions (in my personal style posts) for where to shop the things I wear are mostly UK-based. As always they’re suggestions only, but I don’t believe that where you shop bears any relation to how well you dress anyway. Money can’t buy you style remember! 😉
Lots of fab ideas for a newbie blogger – thank you. I've got a lot to conquer! but it's exciting learning.Jacqui

Sorry I’m late to comment, Catherine. (I’ve been away for 2.5 weeks with a less than stellar internet connection). Thanks for the awfully kind words and fabulous list of bloggers. I know most of them, and like you, their styles are an inspiration at any age – just like yours. It’s never too late to have fun with fashion. Help me shout that from every roof top. xo
No problem Angie – it was my pleasure to feature you. I agree with you 100%… and thank you!!

I love this post Catherine! You've introduced me to a bunch of new contemporaries that I am so happy to follow. It's funny: I never really think of myself as an over 40 blogger, but I totally am! I think it's my day job working as a high school librarian that keeps me youthful. For example, I wore knee highs and a pleather skater skirt just this week. Op! Did I just write that!!?
I'd love to make this list some day. I'm so happy for these new women to follow. Great post. Thank you!
Ann of Kremb de la Kremb

There are so many great over 40 bloggers – lovely list here to start people off! As one of the many 40+ women who write blogs, who no longer relate to the 20 year olds so well these days or many fashion magazines, it's great to see others in the same boat who their fabulous style.
Thanks, Imogen! Glad you liked the post x
