10 Things I'm Loving This Month: May 2024

In my Things I’m Loving This Month I have The Idea of You, “lifting heavy shit”, THE best (affordable) eyelash serum – and more!

I’m kinda thinking that this month has been about nothing except the release of The Idea of You on Prime with Anne Hathaway and male perfection personified Nicholas Galitzine… I mean, has anyone been talking about anything other than this movie?! Or maybe it’s just me ; -)

My usual favourite month hasn’t exactly been glorious weather-wise (there have been some warm sunny days but still a lot of rain, ugh), so I’ve had the opportunity to look for great things to watch. Plus a couple of great purchases I made and lots of reading (soooo much good stuff is on Substack these days, it really is having a shining moment in the spotlight).

Hopefully at least one or two of these things will interest you: happy weekend/watching/reading! (Oh and if you, too, become Nicholas Galitzine-obsessed, don’t blame me…)

This month I’m loving…

1. The Idea of You on Prime, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, who has officially RUINED me. Everyone’s been talking about the movie, especially the chemistry between the two stars, and I wholeheartedly agree. But then, the man would probably have chemistry with a wooden plank, he’s THAT fine…

2. Loved Before, the sustainable soft toy adoption agency. They recycle pre-loved toys into “eco toys” that are sustainable AND adorable: why has no one thought of this before?

3. JUST how good this wee Scottish lass’s impression of a lion’s roar is. Honestly, nothing I can say will prepare you for how realistic it is, I can’t stop watching it on repeat and laughing every time.

4. These beauty products:

i) This adorable puffy headband and wristband scrunchies set for washing your face (no more dribbles down my forearms! whoop!)

ii) This luxury honey & almond hand cream (so moisturising and such a glorious smell) which I put on just before bed now.

iii) This eyelash growth serum by NYK1 which has given me INCREDIBLY long, lush lashes again (at around £40 it’s soooo much cheaper than Revitalash which I had to stop buying due to the price).

5. Maid on Netflix. God this was SO GOOD, I can’t recommend it enough. It stars Margaret Qualley, Andie MacDowell’s daughter (they’re both in it playing mother and daughter): “After fleeing an abusive relationship, a young mother finds a job cleaning houses as she fights to provide for her child and build them a better future”. It’s based on the book by Stephanie Land who I’d actually been following on Substack before I knew about the Netflix series. Her book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive is now on my “Want to read” list.

6. Just about any video by Jungle, the British dance music project, with their incredible dance routines. I’m sure you’ll recognise their songs, like It’s Us Against the World – but the choreography is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Oh, to have that much energy…!

7. This brief but thorough article which explains where to start to “lift heavy shit” for health and longevity.

8. This astronaut galaxy star projector. I bought this as a fun gift for Keith for his birthday, and we absolutely love it (so much more than I expected)! It creates such a lovely atmosphere in the living room in the evening, we just sit staring at the ceiling swirling with stars and a “galaxy”.

9. Giving compliments, and here are six compliments that land every time (that also aren’t appearance-centric).

10. Substack posts about getting older, like this one about why Jennifer Aniston’s face is symptomatic of our confused narrative around ageing: “Whatever you choose people will judge. It’s not easy for any older woman these days”. Sad but true.

NYK1 is probably the most impressive product I’ve ever used for results. It is amazing!

Tracey isn’t it just brilliant?! I didn’t think I’d ever find a product that would match Revitalash, but seems that other brands have improved their formulas 😀

I’ve been trying to incorporate ‘lifting heavy shit’ (!) into my routine but I know I’m not doing enough yet! However, I just bought a rebounder (which is bloody brilliant) and my weekday routine (first thing in the morning before coffee) is twenty minutes of yoga, 15 minutes of rebounding using light weights while I jump, then ten minutes of yoga to cool down. I must say I feel great afterwards! And my plan is to increase the weights as I improve.
I’ve been wanting one of those galaxy thingies for a while now but was worried I’d choose a shitty one on Amazon so I’ve just saved your Amazon link in my favourites and I shall be buying it soon! Thanks 🙂
    Great post, Catherine!

I had to Google a rebounder, Suzy…. I used to have one!! I actually had to sell it because our ceilings were just too low in our old house, it meant my head came a bit too close for comfort when I bounced, eek 😀

The more I read about lifting weights as we age, the more I’m convinced too. It makes perfect sense! I can’t wait to get back into the routine of it, having constant pain in just about every area of my body for so long has been a real test of my patience!

The galaxy astronaut guy is BRILLIANT. He’s quite a bit bigger than I expected, so do check the measurements of him. But he still looks cute in the living room, no regrets! x

Oh! Soft toy adoption. How fabulous! Umm, I appear to have sudden onset hay fever or a tear duct self test Thank you for sharing that, it’s really heartwarming. Investment may follow.

As to compliments, so much yes to that. I feel they’re a joy to give and yes, a struggle to receive, so ‘thank you’ seems the kind reply.

On that note, I love you receive an email about your latest post, as your writing is engaging, witty, and always interesting. Go you! ✊

Isn’t it such a fabulous idea, Lynn… I often check in with it just to see who’s up for adoption!!

And thank you for the lovely compliment, that really does mean a lot <3 x
