Yet another item I had on my ongoing “I’m never wearing one of those again” list: the 90s bucket hat.
=Sigh= Yes, I’ve done it again. Like I did with skinny jeans a few years back (and even further back than that: leggings), ruffled collars, backpacks and chunky trainers, I’ve worn something a second time around that was previously a big fat No. And loved it.
I’d noticed that bucket hats had been making their way back on the style scene (you can tell I’m old and probably wore them first time just through my use of the expression “back on the scene” #eyeroll), and at first I was OF COURSE all, No I’m not wearing them again, no way, nope, never.
And then what happens?

You guessed it… before I know it I’m ordering a camel bucket hat “just to see what it’s like”. Just to see if it suits me.
(I’m going to stick my neck out – with a big fat egotistical head on top – and say that ALL hats suit me. I’ve yet to find a hat that doesn’t like me. There. I’ve said it.)
And the inevitable happened: I wore it round the house a bit, caught my reflection a few times, and decided to keep it. It seems I like bucket hats… What on earth is wrong with me?!
In my defence, it’s actually a very practical hat for this time of year. The outfit here (as is all too obvious from the picture of a wayward greyhound named Suki, below) is a dog-walking outfit from the weekend, where we actually had a very mild autumn day and a few showers. When walking the dog I usually grab either a baseball cap or a beanie/bobble hat; the former doesn’t keep your hair dry in the rain but doesn’t make your head hot, and the latter doesn’t repel rain in any way but does keep your head and ears warm.
(This is compelling reading, I know, but stick with me.)
The bucket hat is good in the rain and doesn’t make you hot, so a perfect combination of the two for milder weather…! WINNING, me.
Sunday was Remembrance Sunday in the UK and as I’ve done for most of the last few years on the blog, I’ve photographed the outfit I wore with my Remembrance poppy. Funnily enough I wore my poppy with this same green jacket last year but hadn’t realised – it’s yet another coat in my arsenal of “longline jackets that I wear over and over” (scroll down to see some of the other ways I’ve worn it).
Also… check out the other “Remembrance Day outfits” I’ve worn through the years – in other words when I’ve worn my poppy: 2011 / 2012 / 2014 / 2016 / 2017 / 2017 (two that year) / 2018 / 2019.
Hope you’re having a good week; we just found out yesterday that there’s news of a vaccine. This year just might improve a bit for us all yet, fingers crossed.
Are you thinking Yay or Nay to the return of bucket hats? Or are they a bit too Britpop/Gallagher brothers for you 😉 Comment below…
Stay safe, XOXO
P.S. I’m drawing the line at denim bucket hats with the brim turned up at the front. And a flower stuck on the side. OH, THE HORROR…

Author
hehe we should never say never, eh Lucy?! Thank you xo
Hey, what goes around, comes around, right? Especially in fashion. I find myself “re-styling” all kinds of things I vowed I would never wear again! Lol! The bucket hat is super cute and looks great on you, Catherine. I expect to see lots more of this hat in the blogosphere!
xx Darlene
Author
I don’t know why I say “never again”, Darlene… I always wear them again!! lol 😀
I love hats, but only certain styles suit me, I’m not sure if this is one of them – looks great on you though. Jacqui x

thanks so much Jacqui! xx
Loving this bucket hat on you, and your green jacket too! It’s so versatile!
I hope you are having a great week!

Thank you Amber – I love this jacket so much, it IS so versatile as you say!
Love the hat. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
Author
Thank you dear Patrick, you too! x
The hat really suits you! I have loads of hats but don’t own a bucket hat. If I buy any more hats my husband will probably divorce me!

Haha I think Keith is the same with me with ANY more clothes, Emma!! 😉
Thanks sweetie x
You are absolutely adorable in your new bucket hat!

aww bless you Michelle, thank you x
You really suit this fab bucket hat, Catherine! “Brit Pop” and a certain person do come to mind. Such a cool dog-walking outfit.

Hehe I’m worried that that person comes to mind, Alison (he does to me too)… I’m not a fan of his!!!! Thank you though 😀
I’ve always adored hats but since embracing my curls several years ago, I’ve had a very difficult time finding any that fit and/or complement my ‘do. Perhaps the bucket is a style I should try. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love that you embrace your curls now, Rena – but I could see how you have to be selective with hats! I reckon the bucket hat could work though…!
A much-needed accessory at the moment! I’m seriously thinking about a Fedora. My hair is awful even after ten minutes on the damp outside air xx
Author
I think a fedora is VERY “you”, Laurie…!
Love the bucket hat! I do remember wearing those in the 90s but they still look great! This is such a chic dog walking outfit. Thanks for hosting and have a great week!

aww thank you lovely Katie! x
You look so cute Catherine. You suit all hats and as MT said above, such a great idea for rainy days. I love the green cost too. So versatile. Thank you for hosting the link xxx
There’s nought wrong with bucket hats, or wearing anything 2nd time round. You’re lucky that hats suit you. My hair style seems to ruin hats and dangly earrings!
Author
My problem is hats ruining my hair, Gail… maybe why I wear hats so much, my hair is always ruined!! 😉
Author
thanks lovely Liz – turns out they’re the perfect solution (it’s a bit obvious really, seeing as they’re a style worn by fisherman and are literally named after something that holds water, LOL!!!!) x
The bucket hat looks great on you, but although I own 27 hats I don’t have a bucket hat. And kind of thinking maybe I won’t get one???? Not sure. But on you, it looks fine. Also love the green jacket and poppy. Thanks for hosting this linkup 🙂
Author
Thanks Penny – I’m sure that despite owning dozens of hats as well there’s a style I don’t own… at the moment I can only think of a top hat LOL!!
Omg Catherine it hadn’t occurred to me to wear my bucket hat on rainy days. I bought a brown one last summer and wore it constantly to shade my face from the sun. When Autumn came, I put it away! *runs to summer storage for bucket hat.
I’m such a dope lol, thanks for the inspo mate xx
Author
Hehe as I said to Liz, it’s worn by fishermen and is named after something that holds water, MT… not sure why we didn’t think of that straight away!!!! 😀
Hi Catherine
The hat does look great on you! I have been seeing these pop up and they look fun to wear. I just don’t look great in hats. ( except a beret). Love those rugged boots!
jess xx
Author
Thanks Jess… I didn’t realise quite how muddy the boots were till I saw the photos – at least it’s real life!!
Britpop? I immediately thought,,Vera,,. Lol. But only when I hadn’t seen your photos of course. Love that beautiful green coat, and the poppy. I think that is always so respectful. That’s what I love about the UK.
Author
Thanks Nancy – I always love getting my poppy out every November 🙂
I have always admired a classic bucket hats on others and think they are Uber cool, unlike tight skinny jeans or leggings which in my opinion are best not seen outside the house! But don’t tell anyone I said that !!
Classic wins everytime, looking fabulous as ever Mrs S

Haha I won’t tell anyone Ashley 😉 Thank you lovely xo
You do look fab in hats…even the bucket hat lol! I like hats too but hate how my hair gets so messed up by them!!
Hugs
Suzy xx
Author
thanks Suzy! My hair is always messed up by them too, maybe why I keep wearing them, to hide the hat hair from the day before 😉
I love this outfit, and I agree about the bucket hat being just the right kind of hat for dog walking…..
I bought one against my better judgement ( !! ) but don’t regret it! Suki looks like she’s got her eye on other things though….E
Author
Suki isn’t interested in the camera, unlike her older brother Riley… he was drawn to the camera like a moth to a flame!! Suki is always on the lookout for squirrels, lol 😉
Catherine, this is the cutest dog walking outfit ever! I love your green jacket and your beautiful poppy pin and, of course, you are rocking the bucket hat! I also love hats and most styles suit me as well, but only after I grew my hair long! I hated the way hats looked on me when I had short hair. I have to find the post with my favorite bucket hat and link it up! So fun!

I know what you mean about the short hair with hats thing, Shelbee… I always make sure I have some hair poking out when wearing them! Thanks my lovely x
