Wearing Black and White a Different Way #IWillWearWhatILike

Wearing Black and White a Different Way: Catherine Summers of Not Dressed As Lamb wearing a red check double breasted jacket, black/white striped sweater, multicoloured neck scarf, floppy black hat, white trousers, black lace-up boots | Fashion Over 40

When I think of black and white, I generally think of black as the dominant colour with white thrown in.

Certainly not mostly white with a bit of black thrown in – but I thought it’d make a nice change to wear white trousers, despite it being winter, with some bold stripes and then just black accessories.

And of course a little colour as well… did you think I’d forgotten who I was for a minute?!!

Despite all this black and white talk, this outfit actually started with the La Redoute jacket – another item I’d had my eye on for a while, hoping it’d go into the sale. (Which it did – down to less than half price.) My signature style of oversized shape, pinky-red checks and masculine tailoring? Oooooh, yes please. Another addition to my oversized blazer arsenal.

The black and white followed after. I dug out my (very old) white stretchy trousers (very similar to these gorgeous white Ted Baker joggers I found) and the black lace-up boots – bought months and months ago but not really worn properly yet.

So yes, it’s another outfit worn round the house ‘because lockdown’, but it’s fun to dress up like I talked about a couple of weeks ago. When you force yourself to do it I find you actually do it more often than when you’re able to leave the house for more than dog walking or grocery shopping. Hopefully by spring (god it can’t come quickly enough IMO) we might be able to wear these dress-up outfits for real.

BTW if you’re stuck in the deep freeze happening over North America, for goodness sake please stay safe and well. I promise I’ll NEVER again moan about our -10°C (14°F) when you guys are getting temperatures of -40°C (same in °F)… #SuperShockedFace

Favourite thing you’re wearing right now – anyone else feeling the b&w thing? Or are you too bloody cold to give two sh$ts about anything other than being warm enough?? Comment below…

Stay safe, XOXO

    Totally obsessed with the scarf!!!
I am awaiting spring time and the end of this pandemic to start dressing again I won’t even say dressing up jus plain dressing.
I am approaching the end of my pregnancy and hopefully the ok from my orthopedist to wear something else but sneakers and THEN fitting into my non maternity clothes to start playing with clothes again… and having somewhere to show them off!!!
Also loved the blazer!!! I definitely need a blazer in my closet!!!

There was no way you could NOT get that blazer, Catherine – made for you! And you are made for the floppy hat – look marvelous. This is my first day out of the house in almost a week – we’ve been trapped under ice, snow, more ice, and those -10C temps you mentioned! But at least we’re not in Texas, so we do have electricity, AND got a fresh tank of propane this week – whew!

Thank you MK! That’s a relief to hear you’ve not been without power (the stories coming out of Texas are terrible), but I can only imagine just how horribly cold and scary the big freeze has been 🙁

OK, this is not related to this post specifically, but I think you should include this YouTube video in one of your roundups because what she has to say is spot on for any age, and also, I think she may be your style soulmate. https://youtu.be/7CAMbJs0Dhk

I love this outfit, Catherine! That blazer is perfection! The colors, the checks, the oversized fit. So, so good! And those boots, too! Our winters where I live are always brutally cold and right now I am definitely too cold to give a hoot about much except warm and cozy layers! I generally appear as if I am wearing everything I own at once!

You said it so well – exactly what I wanted to say. I think I might need to replicate this look somehow since I just (finally) found a good pair of white jeans. She said, running to her closet!

I think the addition of that gorgeous hat and amazing scarf really made this outfit pop! I love it. You look beautiful, Catherine!

I love your take on black and white, Catherine. That boyfriend blazer is SOOO cute! That’s my favorite blazer as well. Luckily, we aren’t experiencing the horrid cold here in SoCal–thank goodness!–but it is super crazy for so many people we know!! Spring? Bring it on!

Great look and brilliant styling idea. I’m also getting used to the idea of dressing in outdoor clothes just to stay home. Fortunately I live in an area with much milder climate so no deep freeze for me.

  17. 16 February 2021 / 6:41 pm

Me & Black don’t get along too well but this year I gave it one more try and quite liked it. I’ve just bought some gorgeous trousers in the la radoute sale I had my eye on. And I’m loving my boots similar to yours Catherine. I call them bover boots! The silk scarf you’ve paired the outfit with is beautiful too x

Mine ARE a bit like bovver boots, Laurie – except they have heels so I’m thinking they don’t fully deserve the title! 😉

I love this scarf too – it seems to go with so many outfits. Thank you lovely x

  18. 16 February 2021 / 6:33 pm

I never like to wear black and white because it makes me feel like a waitresse. But adding another color, or colores, gives the look a total different vibe!

I know what you mean, Nancy – for me black trousers and a white top makes me think (boring) office outfit too, so switching it up with white trousers instead made all the difference IMO! Thank you x
