A t-shirt dress (or shirt dress) is an easy item to style in the summer: Just add shoes and a bag – maybe a scarf too – and you’re pretty much good to go.
But what to do with it in the autumn? It’s always good to make your clothes work hard, however (as the oft-used-by-bloggers expression goes), so a t-shirt dress can be worn in the transitional season with clever layering and some key accessories. Though I did mine a little differently: Buy an item first then wonder how to style it, anyone? That’s me more often than I’d like to admit…!
The item in question is this gorgeous rust coloured t-shirt dress that I got for a steal in the sale at ASOS – it’s sadly sold out (no wonder when it’s less than a tenner), but this one and this one are similar (just add a belt if you want to pull it in like mine). I did think about the “rule” that says if you’re wearing something loose up top, go for form-fitting on the bottom… Then I promptly ignored it and went for something loose instead.
I thought that gorgeous rust colour deserved some more autumnal oomph in the form of my khaki floral wide leg pants (less than half price!), some grey pointed heels to go with the roll neck top, and some statement jewellery. The question is, what’s the best jewellery to wear with so many autumnal colours?
SHOP THE LOOK:
I think I’ve found the ultimate in seasonal jewellery: A statement necklace that simply screams autumn, the stunning tri colour leaf necklace (and matching earrings) by Eternal Collection. (In fact it’s a season ahead, as when you walk you sound like jingle bells which I rather love.) The colours in this set are just beautiful and IMHO just enhance the rust, khaki and grey combination.
This post is part of another collaboration with the Over 40 Collective – see below for the six gorgeous ladies and how they styled the jewellery that they chose. So many different styles, so many different ways to wear them…!

The Over40Collective
The Over40Collective (O40Co) is a group of seven European bloggers in their 40s and 50s working collectively for women of a similar age to prove that style doesn’t have to stop at 40. Our aim is to work with all brands who want to spread this message, not just those specifically aimed at an older demographic. The fact that we all have such different styles proves that the “rules” for dressing over a certain age are utter nonsense – we dress to suit our personalities and then our shapes, and not at all “for our age”.
The close friendship and support system that we have created through daily contact online and meetings in person have resulted in what we think is an incredibly exciting and progressive blogger collaboration.
Do take the time to visit their blogs and see how they’ve styled all their Eternal Collection pieces – this proves how different women can style pieces from the same brand and come up with completely different styles and looks.
Thank you Eternal Collection 🙂

A deep rich blue is the colour I associate most with Michelle’s style – the turquoise stones of her pretty bracelet complement that classic navy blue and go so well with her gorgeous colouring and dark hair. Read in full >>

Annette’s wearing black so stylishly – as always – and the matching silver necklace, bracelet and earrings (I love the hammered finish) are all the accessories she needs for her wonderfully flattering outfit of black with punches of red and burgundy. Read in full >>

You can probably tell I especially chose this set for the colours, can't you Michelle…?!! thanks hon xx
How amazing does that rust colour look with your hair? The necklace is gorgeous for autumn.
Gail thank you!!
You look simply fab with those flowing trousers and gorgeous necklace. I love the way You coordinate your heels with the polo neck. Why don't I do things like that? A fan
Aww thanks sweetie – just try it!! As with all these things, if it doesn't work you can just wear something else tomorrow…! x
I've always thought there was something special about jewellery with leaves on it – and this necklace and earrings certainly is special. GORGEOUS!! I love that you ignored the so-called 'rules' and wore a loose fitting top with loose fitting trousers – exactly the kind of thing I like to do but usually end up changing one!!

Thank you Suzy – yes I know what you mean about leaf jewellery… This necklace is so lovely with the jingle bells sound it makes! ;))
Lovely post, Catherine. All you ladies are so beautiful and such pretty jewelry. Let me say, Catherine, that I love this idea of putting this tee shirt dress over the flowy fall pants. And you added the perfect accessories. That necklace is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. – Amy

Thank you Amy – I was a bit hesitant putting two flowy pieces together, but sometimes you just gotta break those rules…!
Wow! Such a stunning combination. The necklace is perfect for Autumn/fall. I love the trousers too and they look fabulous with the top. Love Liz xxx http://www.whatlizzyloves.com xxx

This necklace is absolutely perfect on you. When I was looking through the Eternal site and I saw it, I immediately thought of you. The colours are amazing with you hair, and work so brilliantly with this outfit. Well done, lady! xx
Hah! I did the same with the website, picking things out for the rest of the collective…! Thank you Lisa my lovely x
Fabulous necklace! I love accesories with leaves! I bought my first earrings with leaves in the UK when I was 14!
I have some other leaf earrings too, Nancy – so I too am partial to this type of jewellery…! thanks hon x
I love this outfit Catherine.
The colours are perfect and you know I appreciate a layer (or two, or three…) especially when it involves a polo neck.
Such a stunning necklace.
