How to Style a Black Maxi in the Summer | With a Floral Tank and Sandals

Black maxi, floral tank, strappy flats | Not Dressed As Lamb

Just occasionally I like to dip my toe in the black sartorial pool (a fancy way of saying I don’t wear black much).

I bought a black maxi skirt as a great basic a couple of years ago and it never fails to look good in either summer or winter, though strangely I do prefer wearing it in the summer. It lends itself perfectly to a very simple floral tank (with another underneath; I do like to layer my tanks) and strappy flat sandals. In another outfit with this skirt a couple of summers ago I mentioned how a maxi skirt with a tucked-in top really lengthens your legs – even with flats. Now that’s a miracle where my average-length legs are concerned.

The gorgeous suede lace-up sandals are one of the treats from my day with Marks & Spencer this week – I was working on a campaign that was all about Style Evolutions. Dressing ‘for our age’ was a hot topic… All will be revealed in a blog post before the end of the month. I think you’re going to love it.

What are your go-to combinations that make you feel tall and elegant? Do you have any tricks that you can share with us…? I’d love to know!

I don't wear much black in the summer either but do have both a black maxi skirt and dress. I tend to wear it with a bright color and it just feels more summery to me. A great look Catherine!

Serene and elegant…love the bag picking out the vest detail, nice touch!
I always find that I feel most elegant in nice fabric. Strange I know! Great fabrication (in whatever) will move and glide and just FEEL more elegant. The perfect outfit for me would be: perfectly fitted trousers a great knit or jacket and, of course, beautiful shoes….always a winner!

I only realised afterwards that the bag picked out the red in the tank, Samantha… I must have a sixth sense, haha! ;)) Thank you sweetie, and I totally agree about the shoes!!

I think black maxi skirts are the best. I few years ago I got in my mind that i was getting to old for them though. But I quickly got that out of my head and now I'm back to loving them again. And I love your sunglasses. /love Ida

Thank goodness you got that out of your head, Ida…!! I can't think why you'd think that though (did someone tell you, or maybe you read it somewhere)? Anyway thank you my lovely, you're a sweetheart! x
