I know, shock horror: I’m wearing black. And not just a little black, but an entire black jumpsuit. Guess what… I love it!
I’m so pleased to be teaming up with JD Williams again after showing off my summer brights a few weeks ago – this time I’ve done the opposite. I’ve done black, but not as you know it. The reason why it’s not as you know it is because I’m never in it…!
But it wouldn’t be interesting or a challenge to constantly go for the same thing every time, would it, so I gave myself the ultimate challenge: take JD Williams’ request for a summer holiday outfit and turn it on its head. What do we wear less of in summer? Black. What do we WANT in summer when it comes to holiday dressing? Easy peasy outfits. Throw-it-on and go ensembles. What’s the ultimate in throw-it-on-and-go?
A jumpsuit.
Bathroom issues aside, a jumpsuit is the EASIEST way to wear something fabulous on your summer holiday. And why not wear black in the summer? This black jumpsuit* (with perfect sleeves, I might add) is especially comfy, and best of all it has no buttons, zips or ties. You step into it, put your arms in and you’re dressed.
But it wouldn’t be very “me” without a bit more styling than that, and it’s the perfect base for something a lot more exciting…

The summer has unfortunately not been particularly forthcoming so far here in the UK (more showers than sunshine). We also don’t want to stress Riley out as he’s so old now, so car journeys or even leaving him with anyone else are out of the question, hence no holidays planned for us. But it doesn’t stop me swanning around on ACTUAL sunny days like I’m on holiday, so this is what I’ll be wearing the moment we get some sun and an event to attend this summer.
(We’re going to a concert at the Eden Project at the end of the month so I’ll probably wear this then!)
The three key items in this outfit are the black jumpsuit*, the red floral blazer* and the bronze slider sandals*, all by JD Williams. I’ve had my eye on the jumpsuit for AGES, despite its “not me” colour, but somehow I knew I could still style it the NDAL way.
A big dollop of colour, some great accessories and BAM! – an outfit fit for a summer holiday. Depending on how hot your destination is, the jersey fabric is perfect for cooler evenings. The wide legs allow some much-needed ventilation to take effect. The wrapover top is especially flattering to bigger boobies (like mine) and the waist is stretchy – perfect for a tapas-induced food baby.
If you’re like me and want a little more modesty, add a camisole underneath (here’s a pink with black lace and a blue with black lace version). You could even wear the jumpsuit straight over the top of your swimsuit or bikini. The red floral blazer* is lightweight and adds that colour I always desperately need/want with any outfit, even if I’m wearing black.
The accessories really finish off this outfit: a Panama hat (you ALWAYS want a hat in the summer to fend off those pesky sunrays), a white tote bag (avoid black bags with black outfits at ALL costs, there’s nothing duller…), statement earrings and a deep red belt to ‘neaten’ the elasticated waist of the jumpsuit.
The bronze slider sandals* are yet another version of my new favourite sandal style for summer – flat, chunky and comfy. Bronze couldn’t be more apt for a summer holiday, could it…?
Oh and as far as makeup goes, I went for red on my nails and toes and even debuted what I’ve been loving lately: bold, pigmented eyeshadow. Here I’m wearing a deep red/orange colour from the MUA Eyeshadow Empire Butterfly palette (scroll down for a closeup). I decided I HAVE to get myself out of my comfort zone of natural makeup and try something different now and then…!
Have I persuaded you to try black for summer (would you consider a lightweight black jumpsuit like this)? What cover ups are you taking to wear on your holidays this year? Comment below…!

Catherine, I am loving black on you! So chic and dramatic. The blazer keeps it perfectly Catherine-colored, too. And those slides are just too adorable. Such a great outfit! I still have not found a jumpsuit that works on me, but rompers I am loving lately!

Thank you Shelbee – the red and bronze definitely add drama, don’t they?
I think I have a little crush on your jumpsuit, it looks easy to wear and sooo versatile. Great styling as always.
And it’s what do eh, no holidays. My 19 year old cat is pushing me that direction after my latest holiday debacle, as my latest post touches on.
Hugs, Mary x.

I was definitely surprised to see you in black at first, but you’ve definitely made it “you” with your accessories and styling. I wear black all the time in summer (I’m wearing a black blazer as we speak) — glad you find it so versatile!

Ha ha, so funny. Because I wanted a black jumpsuit, couldn’t find the the perfect one and opted for this one. I should have searched a bit longer for a black one!

A black jumpsuit wasn’t really on my radar Nancy, but as soon as I saw it I knew it would be a good one – it’s a classic! x
Love the way you’ve styled that jumpsuit, it makes it so much more ‘ you ‘ too !
Never ventured into jumpsuits since the 80’s, carrying a bit more weight than I should- I
wonder if it would be a good look for me personally ?
Anyway, you look fab and there will be endless possibilities to dress it up x

I don’t think your weight has anything to do with it, Karen – if you look at my plus size bloggers post I published the other week https://www.notdressedaslamb.com/2019/06/14-plus-size-fashion-bloggers-you-should-know.html you’ll see that lots of them wear jumpsuits and look amazing! It’s just about getting the one that suits your shape rather than your size – and of course one that fits your personality (whether you’re a florals, plain or patterned girl for example, and whether you want a simple design or a fussier style with belts, buttons, pockets etc.)
My best advice is to order several different shapes and colours and get someone to photograph you (don’t do mirror selfies), then study the photos. You’ll soon see what one you like the best…! Remember if you like it, GO FOR IT. Don’t get hung up on whether you “should” be wearing it or not.
And thank you for the lovely compliment too! xx
Gorgeous piece – you look like a beautifully accessorized black panther prowling up the drive!

Ooooh thanks Mary Katherine – I’ll take that!! 😉

Thanks Suzy – that surprises me, seeing as you live in a hot country! Once a goth, always a goth, eh?!!! heehee 😉
Black has suddenly become the trendiest colour this summer! So you’re bang on trend as always and you highlight how we can all wear any colour, as long as we put a flattering shade near our face. Stunning photos Catherine.

Thank you Gail – yes I’m surprised that there’s so much black around this summer, but I quote like it (probably as it’s so different for me)! x
What a lovely colour eyeshadow, a surprise as I didn’t really see it til the shot with your eyes shut. How did you get it so intense?

Hi Nicola – apologies for the very late reply, I don’t know if you saw but we lost our doggy right around the time this post went out so I’ve only just got to replying to my comments. The eyeshadow is just very pigmented – I’ve linked to it in the post (eyeshadows these days are REALLY pigmented compared to eyeshadow of days gone by… I don’t know if you’re my sort of age? Makeup has a changed A LOT since I was young!)
The jumpsuit looks so comfortable! If I ever take the plunge and buy one I want a black one!
