All the Mid-Century Modern Homewares We’ve Bought For Our New House

All the Mid-Century Modern Homewares We've Bought For Our New House | Not Dressed As Lamb

My first interiors post: I’ve been promising this since we first put our house on the market, so here’s a gentle introduction to my style!

Not that it was ever intentional, but as the years have gone by I’ve come to realise that my favoured interiors style is undoubtedly mid-century modern. As much as I like minimalism, glam boho chic and many other styles, I’m just drawn to anything 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. A mish-mash of all three, and very much reflective of my preferred colours [to wear] of oranges, yellows and pinks.

We moved into our new house – a new build – in July, and although we’re still trying to decide where things go upstairs, we’re mostly sorted downstairs. We were surprised at just how much work a new build can be: you don’t have things like loft boarding for storage, a shed, shelves, curtain poles, toilet fixtures (cabinets, toilet roll holders, etc.) or coat racks, so all those things have to be shopped for and put up. Often when you move into a new house you use fixtures that are there until you replace them – but new builds have none of that, and it’s A LOT of work to get them all up!

So what we’re now waiting on is a shed, which is about to be delivered and erected – though as I write it should have been put up yesterday (I’m scheduling this in advance as I’m away on my detox break this week). That means we can get all the gym equipment, tools, garden equipment, paint and all that other “shed stuff” out of the main living room and into proper storage. The loft is now boarded so once I’m back from my week away that too can be filled (TIDILY of course, and with no useless clutter this time…)

Then that means the smallest bedroom (AKA our dressing room) will be empty for us to put up wardrobes once we’ve bought them. (Which means MORE Ikea shopping of course, which I love luckily!) Everything has such a knock-on effect – it all has to be done in order which at times can be rather frustrating. But we’re getting there.

So while I’m still trying to empty the house of boxes and garden tools, I thought I’d show you all the things we have bought for our new house. Admittedly some of the things were bought last year, but they’re still pretty new and were bought when we were considering just new decor and furniture rather than a whole move.

Nearly everything I’ve listed is the same as what we actually bought. We have a fair few vintage pieces so I’ve linked to items on eBay here and there, or one of two pieces have sold out so I’ve linked to something almost the same. The great thing about homewares is that they don’t sell out in the same way clothes do: I bought quite a few of these bits long before we moved, and they’re still current and available online – which is good news for you if you like them!

I’ve split them all up by room to make more sense of what’s here. The next time you’ll see these items they should be in-situ in an actual post about how I’ve styled them all. And finally: don’t forget to check out everyone’s links below for the #SaturdayShareLinkUp! Enjoy 😀

I am hopeless with just pictures of things. Never can imagine what they will look like in a home (in case of clothes: how they will look on me).
So I am looking forward to seeing photos of your house once it is finished. We have to choose two new chairs in the living room, which is a major pain I can tell you. We had the living room completely finished and perfect. But now the chairs have gone old and need replacement.

Yes, I love Mid-century Modern. And all things Art Deco too. In fact, living in Glasgow there are so many places to see Macmillan’s Art Nouveau style; in cafes, big houses and galleries.

Ideally, I would decorate and furnish my home in these styles. But I also like the simplicity of Scandinavian design with everything white and clutter-free.

Some great things on your list. Looking forward to your next interiors post. X

It’s an era I grew up in, it didn’t seem so stylish then! Feel what you’re going through knitting out a new home from scratch. We bought a new build in Sussex a few years ago but cheated and bought the show house. All looked good and fully equipped, until we started showering and putting on the heating – then disaster, dahling!
Wishing you pleasant months ahead as you kit out your lovely home. Hope you’ll post some home tours.
    Hugs, x.

Some lovely pieces. A new home is a great time to declutter and buy some new pieces. I am not even sure what my style is. Modern I guess!

I love the table. We really need to update our house. We bought and decorated our house just before “modern” came back into style so it’s much more traditional in style. I think it really looks dated now though and needs an update.

Tbh I don’t think mid century modern goes out of style. Certainly there are periods when it’s more in fashion, but if you chose well, it’s a modern classic look.
The big expensive pieces are neutral items and I change the accessories to ring the changes. (We also have some inherited pieces that aren’t mcm, they just add some personality and quirkiness, it doesn’t have to be 100% mcm!)
That being said I live in a country where mid century modern is in at least 60% of homes in some shape or form. And a lot of classic pieces were designed by Danes too!

I would like to replace my china cabinet with a sideboard. Great idea to find one on ebay!

I love mid century modern too! Some lovely pieces you’ve chosen (funnily I was eyeing up that habitat throw earlier).
Living in Denmark it’s par for the course and you do see Danish classics in a lot of homes. Sometimes the look is minimal, but I like my soft furnishings and knicknacks, so ours will never be that! We have been lucky to find some pieces second hand – our dining table was one of our key buys – we’d spotted the Piet Hein elipse table (it’s everywhere here), but we wanted it with the skaker style legs which were not being produced anymore (we could have got one specially made but it would have cost £1000!). So we started looking for one second hand, when one finally came up in the right size, it had a walnut top – we’d been looking for white laminate – seeing as we have other walnut furniture we decided to go for it, and we couldn’t be more happy! So we’ve ended up with a classic piece I’m confident we won’t see anywhere else anytime soon. And as there are too many dining chairs we like, we’ve teamed the table with mismatched chairs, they’re all black and the height of the back is the same – for us a match made in heaven!

This are some really fun picks. I love the rotary phone. I’m tempted to buy one only because I remember using them when little.

Good luck, although about half of your choices my mum has in her house, she’s literally kept everything from over the years and the house is jam packed. Thanks for hosting. Jacqui Mummabstylish

Some lovely items here Catherine. Glad it’s all coming together for you. Enjoy your detox! I’ve been watching! I’m taking a lot of mums G plan furniture home with me. I’m going to be on the move again soon hopefully! xx

It goes without saying I love your style my friend
It’s interesting you say you like minimalism and boho. I actually do as well! Do I sound like single white female?
I think the beauty of interior style comes through when it’s authentic. The genuine love for a piece of furniture, wall colour or flooring is what makes me happy. Sometimes a mish mash of eras actually work well together. Also I prefer a minimalist style for my kitchen where clean lines and clear surfaces really sing.
    Great post Catherine!
