Bold Floral Pattern Mixing With Bright Heels + the #iwillwearwhatilike Link Up

Springtime pattern mixed florals with longline blazer | Not Dressed As Lamb
This week’s #iwillwearwhatilike theme is florals – yesterday was the Spring Equinox for the northern hemisphere so it seemed only fitting to welcome in spring this way!

I’m wearing a slightly different styled version of the same mixed florals outfit I wore to welcome in spring last year. The same floral top and floral leggings have been paired with my longline blazer and the same coral heels I wore with my ‘Neapolitan ice cream’ outfit a couple of weeks ago, and I like how the muted camel colour of the blazer tones down the loudness of the florals somewhat. Though I did stay true to my colourful style and added those bright heels… You can’t keep a colour addict completely tied down!

I DID STAY TRUE TO MY COLOURFUL STYLE AND ADDED THOSE BRIGHT HEELS… YOU CAN’T KEEP A COLOUR ADDICT COMPLETELY TIED DOWN

I’m always aware that pattern mixing does scare a lot of people, and while I wouldn’t necessarily recommend going all out to begin with by wearing a top and trousers in two wildly different patterns, but wearing two versions of the same pattern in different (but coordinating) colourways does work. Though you don’t have to go for co-ords from the same brand if you don’t want to – try a pair of patterned trousers with a dark background and team them with a patterned top with a light background. Simply make sure at least one, preferably two, colours in both patterns match and you’ll find they harmonise beautifully.

I always believe spring and summer is the time to be braver – and get bolder.

Don’t forget to add your outfits to this week’s link up: Scroll down for all the details, I look forward to seeing what you link up!

#iwillwearwhatilike | Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

So link up all your fabulous outfits (or shoes, accessories, make-up, etc.) every Monday at 3pm UK time – it’ll stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

PLEASE NOTE
This is for linking up what you’ve been wearing (or would like to wear) only. I like to keep it all looking tidy because I’m a bit of a neat-freak, so non-outfit links will be removed – it’s only fair to others linking up!

NEXT WEEK:

5. Please do not link up anything other than outfits, shoes, accessories or make-up  non-outfit links will be removed. This link up is for linking up what you’ve been wearing (or would like to wear) only

What a cute and clever outfit. You're obviously in the advanced fashion class. Pattern-mixing is beyond my ken.

  2. 23 March 2016 / 2:37 pm

I simply HAD to wait until Wednesday to join this linkup, dearest Catherine…because today's the day my own blog post is featuring what's probably my boldest floral combination yet!! 🙂 And I'm totally crediting your sartorial creativity for – little by little – pushing me out of my neutrals comfort zone; after all, who wouldn't be inspired by this wonderfully cheerful top and leggings ensemble of yours?! Loving those pretty pink pumps, too…and the little caramel-coloured bag is delish!! XOXO

Thank you so much for featuring me, I am honored. I always get bolder towards spring and summer, bye bye to the boring boots and hello to my crazy heels (as one example) 🙂

  4. 22 March 2016 / 12:18 pm

Thanks for the feature Catherine. Lovely outfit that I will totally wear. Enjoy the rest of your week. xo

Really like the way you are mixing bold prints with calm camel coat and bag. That is the way I would love wearing it too! Thanks for hosting Catherine! And thank you so much again for the advice. Really helped! xxxx Sabina

I love this post Catherine – had to laugh as we had exactly the same idea at the same time as Sunday morning I also published a floral dress post – smile.
Wishing you loads of fun with your floral prints and adoring the pink shoes…

Yes to florals! Mine are smaller and more delicate, but I love them all!

  8. 21 March 2016 / 11:07 pm

I would never have thought of mixing patterns like this but it so works!
    Beautiful x

I just love the colours and print combined in this outfit! The shoes look stunning with this look and I love that they aren't a predictable choice. Amazing styling as ever dear Catherine 🙂

    Take care,

So, so gorgeous Catherine. I've been clashing prints like crazy over the last few months-I have a clashy post ready to go live on Friday-it was meant to be live last Friday but you know, a night with Hugh Jackman and things got messy-hahah (a night stood next to him I should add)! Love this whole look and those heels *swoon x

    • 25 March 2016 / 7:38 pm

Ohhhhhh you and your Hugh Jackman gallivanting, Vicki… I'm not envious at all. AT ALL!!!!! hehe 😉 Seriously, thank you my lovely, you're a sweetheart, if a bit of a jammy one!! x

  13. 21 March 2016 / 7:53 pm

I think the balance between your chosen prints is perfect Catherine, but that's not surprising for a fashion icon like you. I love that you chose those gorgeous coral shoes again – they're adorable (sorry if I'm repeating myself!)
I must admit I've found that since I started my own blog I've become bolder in my dressing. Am I guilty of playing to the gallery, perhaps? Maybe. I'd like to think that there's an audience out there who appreciate a over 50 fashion blogger who loves colour and print which helps me justify having fun dressing up.

Oh bless you Anna – hardly a fashion icon but I'll take it graciously, thank you!!!! I definitely think having a blog influences your style, that's for sure… So few people see my outfits IRL but then I think about how many people see them online and it's a bit mind-boggling!! x

  14. 21 March 2016 / 7:24 pm

I love the pattern mix in your outfit. As far as I'm concerned, florals are the new neutral and should be matched with other prints. Your look fits in with my Powers the Flower link-up. Would you consider adding your post to it?

Florals, a great theme for the spring equinox; I like the look you've chosen to celebrate it. Thanks for the linkup.

  16. 21 March 2016 / 5:35 pm

This double floral look is outstanding! I like the eclectic punch that mixing them up adds to usually-sweet florals. I saw it on Instagram and had to rush over to see more photos of it. Love love love. xx

    • 25 March 2016 / 7:35 pm

Hehe to get you to like something florals is an achievement I'm super proud of, Lisa!!!! Thank you sweetie xx

Love the double florals and those candy sweet shoes.

    Thanks for hosting.

Gorgeous mix of prints, and I especially like them paired with those fabulous pumps!

  19. 21 March 2016 / 4:59 pm

Pretty! You really make me want to buy some patterned pants! 🙂

  20. 21 March 2016 / 4:20 pm

WOW! You really suit oversized, round sunglasses. Whenever I've tried round glasses I either look like an owl, or a middle-aged female Harry Potter 🙂
    Love the look, as usual!!

Haha I'm sure you don't, Michelle!!!! I have to admit I thought I looked odd at first, but I think with anything different to what you're used to you eventually get used to it. You've got such beautiful bone structure I bet you'd look fabulous in them! Thank you hun xx

It is funny how springtime—the birth of a new season & greenery—brings about a different way of thinking! I'm definitely being bolder in my clothing choices, but I think most of it is because of bloggers like you! I see your wonderful outfits and think "i can do that"! Thanks for all the inspiration (and for the link up)! jodie

I think springtime does that more than any other season, Jodie – it's probably because people are usually fed up with winter and want to celebrate its end!! And thank you, I'm glad to give you some inspo! x

Sooooooooooooooooooo very lovely and ready for spring, dear Catherine.

Aww Lauren thank you so much! We'll have to see if that's possible, not easy trying to fit everything in…!!

  23. 21 March 2016 / 3:54 pm

I like dresses with a floral pattern, but never wore a pants like that. I think it sreams Spring is coming! But not yet here in the Netherlands.Lol!

    • 21 March 2016 / 5:34 pm

It isn't really spring here in the UK either, Nancy – not the temperatures anyway! I only really wore this outfit indoors, I had the jacket on inside because we just didn't warm up even with the fire on!! x

  24. 21 March 2016 / 3:40 pm

I have a pair of pants with a floral pattern and got brave last fall and paired them with a polka dot blouse. I ended up really liking the outfit and dabbled a bit more in pattern mixing here and there. Your do it SO well! I love everything about your outfit!

That outfit sounds lovely, Andrea – can't say I've teamed florals with polka dots with florals before but I must remember that for the future! Thank you sweetie x

  25. 21 March 2016 / 3:28 pm

That taupe coat is so lovely with the florals and with the bright shoes. Sigh. Now if we'd just get some warm weather.

    • 21 March 2016 / 5:31 pm

Hehe yes, it definitely warm when we took these photos, Susan! Thank you my lovely x

Catherine I'm absolutely honored to be featured — monochrome is one of my favorite dressing techniques so I'm thrilled to have been featured for that week especially!

As for your fabulous outfit, where do I start? The beautiful 'Catherine' tan bag or the stunning floral-on-floral combination you're in? I love it all — so fresh and edgy for spring!
