Yellow Birthday Party Dress & Statement Sandals

Modcloth Yellow Soda Fountain dress & ravel

I have a thing about yellow dresses – I’m drawn to them like bees round a honey pot. Whenever I see a yellow dress in the shops, or online, or being worn by someone, I’m all over it like a rash. (I’m sure it’s always been because of my obsession with this dress Sandy wore in Grease.) So for my birthday party family gathering round our house last month (described as Afternoon Tea, but was actually Beer & Cake), I wore my new ModCloth Soda Fountain dress and fabulous new strappy grey and gold sandals that were kindly gifted to me by Ravel Footwear, which I love.

I added the grey cropped leggings to hide my less-than-perfect knees (just a personal preference) and keep my legs just warm enough on what was a slightly cooler day. The addition of cropped leggings under shorter dresses was a trend I embraced wholeheartedly when it first appeared several years ago… am I right in saying that this look could be on its way out? I was a bit worried that it’s starting to look a little dated, but unless a look screams “old fashioned” I tend not to give it up if I like it.

What you guys think – yay or nay to the cropped leggings under dresses…?

Thanks for share this post I also share with you something hope you like my post. My cousin got married a few months ago and there was no program for the festivities. The wedding started at 5 and lasted about an hour. Naturally, when the ceremony was over at 6 and we headed to the reception site to see appetizers we assumed it was a cocktail hour before dinner. There were two tables on either side of the room which contained buffet style appetizers. Everything was bite size and finger foods ranging from veggies and dip to deviled eggs. Not to mention, the plates were only about 5 inches in diameter. Image our surprise when no food was served throughout the rest of the reception! We had to go back to fill our tiny plates at least five times and were still hungry when the food ran out. Not to mention she had a cash bar as well so we had to pay for drinks and didn't even get a meal. We were not happy at all! Thanks

As always you look absolutely fabulous – however, I would have loved to have seen you wearing the dress without the leggings too. Then we could have had a vote on which look suited you the best!

I don't think leggings under dresses is dated and although I'm not a legging's fan you look great on that outfit!

I love your yellow dress, it suits your colouring so well. I don't know about the leggings though – I think it takes your outfit from girly pretty to casual, but the good thing about fashion these days is that there is so much diversity in trends that nearly anything goes and you should wear what you like

I still like leggings with a dress. Besides, we dress more for ourselves than anybody else. And here's another thought, your style/outfit is more memorable when it isn't the "same thing" everybody else is wearing. :o)

    Those shoes are fantastic!!
I'm torn with the leggings though…I think it add's a fun mixture to the outfit…but then it also takes a little away from it…which might not make any sense! haha

I love the dress and the color I a happy color.

I say yah. Lovely dress and awesome shoes. The legging makes the connection between the dress and the shoes in a cute way. It amazes me you can walk on them, but they are pretty.

Before I read your comments, I looked at your leggings and thought, "I need to try that!" So my first impression was not that it's too dated, but brilliant!

    Happy Birthday, Catherine!

Knees are a bit of a strange body part, aren't they? I am convinced you can wear this lovely dress also without cropped leggings.
I am in doubt about leggings and agree with Patience Crabstick. There are so many lovely tunics and (too) short dresses which could work with leggings. Will this be a new trend then??

I think the leggings are cute and add an interesting element. You look fabulous, Birthday Girl!!

  25. 7 August 2013 / 4:39 pm

I feel like the cropped leggings under a dress look has become a bit dated, which is too bad. The leggings trend enabled me to wear dresses that are shorter than what I would wear with bare legs. I don't like my knees.

I have always loved that dress, and seeing it ON someone makes me think I need one, too. Beautiful. 🙂

Very darling dress! I love yellow as well, but it always seems to be incredibly difficult to find the shade that works with my super pale complexion.

  29. 7 August 2013 / 2:42 pm

you have fabulous legs. which just goes to show that we think looks "horrible" and what others notice is not the same!! Happy belated birthday!
