How to Make a Plain Grey Poncho Much More Exciting #iwillwearwhatilike

How to Make a Plain Grey Poncho Much More Exciting \ with mustard peg leg trousers \ giraffe print scarf \ black ankle boots \ tartan plaid backpack \ pastel sunglasses | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

This was one of those outfits I really did throw together last minute before rushing out the door.

We’ve just finished kitting out our new dressing room in the smallest bedroom of our new house, and in sorting out my wardrobes (I got three doubles, Keith got one double and a single Ikea Pax…) I found lots of things I hadn’t worn in ages.

Case in point: this very plain grey poncho. Charcoal grey isn’t a colour I normally go wild over, but I do like to have a lot of neutrals (grey, camel, navy, brown) in my wardrobe to pair with all the brights I own.

I knew I wanted to wear the poncho – honestly, I don’t think it’s seen the light of day for about four or five years – so decided to go with it and try to style in a much more exciting way than just pairing it with yet more neutrals, i.e. jeans. I’m a bit over jeans right now and am much more in favour of peg leg trousers.

More comfortable where skinny jeans are not, for starters…!

SHOP THE LOOK:

The piece I really loved with this outfit was the giraffe print scarf that my gorgeous friend What Lizzy Loves bought for me. She knows me SO well – it was a gift for taking her with me to the Vuelio Awards as my work wife. So very, very naughty of her but I LOVE IT OF COURSE as she knows all about my giraffe obsession! It’s got little touches of orange which go with just about everything in my wardrobe, not least the mustard paperbag trousers I’m wearing here.

Special mention to my new pastel sunglasses from Mango which are perfect for winter when the sun isn’t really that strong. The colours of this pair are DIVINE, and I can never resist a pair that have light, see-through lenses. Only really for overcast days and adding that extra something to an outfit.

To tie in the black of the scarf I wore long black gloves and black Western ankle boots which also haven’t been worn in donkey’s years (in fact the same goes for the tartan backpack).

New house, new wardrobe, new outfit combinations: I’m finally shopping my closet as they say and loving it. It’s great to have more to choose from simply because you’ve got yourself organised at last. However a cull is STILL needed as there’s still not enough room to move the clothes freely in my three (THREE!!) double wardrobes πŸ™

Anyway – got a plain poncho? Add some fabulous accessories, a splash of colour somewhere and you’re good to go. Easy peasy winter outfit formula.

Do add your outfits to this week’s link up – and if you’ve added a link to here or my button to your post you may be featured in my monthly Women Who Wear What They Like post!

Not Dressed As Lamb #iwillwearwhatilike link up

Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Tuesday at around 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Linking up etiquette…

CLICK HERE to read the rules of linking up (and to grab the #iwillwearwhatilike button). Basically it’s just good manners to link back to here – to leave a comment is even nicer!

PLEASE NOTE: This is for linking up WHAT YOU’VE BEEN WEARING ONLY. Non-outfit links will be removed and you might be blocked if you turn out to be a repeat “offender”!

Do share the love and visit as many links as you can (you never know what other lovely like-minded ladies you might meet) – the original Instagram campaign forged some wonderful new friendships so don’t miss out!

    Yep you totally nailed it!
Love the rich iron ore grey of this poncho coupled with the background colour and your glorious red hair. And Liz my love, the scarf is gorgeous BRAVO!
I quite like giraffes although not to the same extent as you Catherine, this print is quite abstract with a truly retro vibe. Definitely one I’d wear a lot with my wardrobe.

I often find that the outfits that are thrown together turn out better than the ones I plan! I love how you styled this with the scarf! Plus, your photos are absolutely gorgeous!

Some of my favorite outfits have been ones that I’ve put together at the very last minuteβ€”there’s something to be said for spontaneity! Love how you’ve styled the poncho in a way that’s true to you!

I was a LITTLE chilly, Sarah, but we were mostly in the car and in and out of shops so it was actually better than a massive parka or puffa (which get too warm in the car and in the shops)! Thank you x

I love your outfit Catherine – I’m so over jeans too – I haven’t worn any in a couple of years now I think! Having said that; I know I have a few pairs at the bottom of my wardrobe, so I know I need a bit clear-out as well. Good luck – I’m rubbish at getting rid of clothes!
