How to Make an Outfit Look Expensive With a Cheap Accessory #iwillwearwhatilike

Autumnal casual outfit of faux fur collar red tartan jacket denim flares snakeskin boots | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

This week I’ve come to realise that a faux fur collar is an absolute life saver when it comes to saving a bland outfit.

I saw this beautiful green faux fur collar online and added it to my basket while I was doing some Christmas shopping. I have one already in a warm browny-beige colour but I’d forgotten just how fabulous they make a winter outfit look (see this outfit from last year as another example).

In other words, if your outfit needs tszujing up then try a fur collar – it’s an inexpensive way of making your outfit look much more expensive!

I wore mine over a jacket I rediscovered when getting my winter wardrobe out – the red plaid jacket from a couple of winters ago (this one is almost identical). I don’t think I actually wore it once last year as I didn’t go out that much due to my leg injury, so I wore very few of my winter coats.

SHOP THE LOOK:

I’m also rocking my flared jeans (the skinnies still haven’t made an appearance in over a year, and I don’t think they’re coming back anytime soon)! Other than that it was a straightforward outfit for Christmas shopping of new cross body bag and funky plain-lens aviators, which aren’t prescription – they’re just for fun. #IWillWearWhatILike, yadda yadda, you know the drill…!

And of course do add your outfits to this week’s link up and if you’ve added a link to here or my button to your post you may be featured next week!

#iwillwearwhatilike | Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

You've stumbled on to my secret weapon for winter glamour 😉
I have fur collars in pink, brown, and black, and I put them on all kinds of jackets, coats, jumpers and cardigans. They just add a bit of intrigue!
You look so fab in yours, really suits you x

Love this whole look with the mix of pattern and textures, Catherine. The faux fur is fab in green! I do this often with tweed blazers or like last week my karina dress to add a luxurious look . Great look!

The boots!! The plaid!! The flares!! The (faux) fur!! I adore it ALL, dearest Catherine…and your glossy new little cross-body bag is super-scrumptious, too!! The colour thing is still a work-in-progress when it comes to my own wardrobe…but texture – like your cozy furry collar! – has been an outfit mainstay for me for ages!! In fact, with all the snow we've had in Vancouver lately, I think it's high time that I break out my various faux-fur coats for the season!! ;D

When the fur is good it can transform an outfit as you say. I have seen some good fur and hideous items out there. It's the quality that makes the difference. Like this one that your wearing looks top notch. I am loving your wardrobe of glasses too Catherine. I might have to treat myself to som of those beauties xx

This is hands-down my favorite outfit of yours ever Catherine! There is absolutely nothing bland about this at all although the fur collar definitely takes it to a whole new level of fabulousness!

A faux fur collar brightens anything. You really nailed it. I have been seeing these collars everywhere, including some incredibly colourful ones made of feathers. DREAMY. I like to wrap mine around my head too to make a puffy hat/turban. Talk about warm!

OOOooh, I LOVE that collar. It would have been great with my coat today – my outfit tuned out more "black" than I wished. But I also love the idea of mixing pieces of different prices to create a look. Happy holidays! : ) Ana

A faux fur collar is a great accessory! I can really take an outfit from ordinary to special. I love your green one! Makes me think that I may need to add some colored faux fur…

Thanks for the link up & have a good week!

I love the faux fur collar…great price too! I was going through a bag of scarves and gloves the other day and found three that I bought in the January sale last winter and have never worn. Time to get some use out of them I think, especially as one is leopard print 🙂
