1950s Grace Kelly-Inspired Wedding Guest Outfit | Jaeger Floral Top and Skirt

Wedding guest outfit - Jaeger SS16 50s style peony print floral top and skirt dress | Not Dressed As Lamb

A couple of weekends ago I attended the wedding of an old work colleague – and what better excuse is there for getting dressed up than an invitation to a white wedding?

Rather than a dress, I chose to wear a matching floral peony top and 1950s style skirt co-ords that were gifted to me from Jaeger – to show that you can create the illusion of a dress but have the versatility of separates that you can wear and style differently afterwards. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Grace Kelly, and this is the closest I get to channelling that gorgeously elegant 50s style. Jaeger do properly long midi length skirts (none of this annoying knee-length passed off as midi nonsense) and the quality of their pieces is second-to-none.

TUCKING IN THE TOP AND ADDING A WIDE BELT CREATES THE ILLUSION OF A DRESS: THE PROPORTIONS WORK BEAUTIFULLY, DIVIDING THE BODY INTO THIRDS AND MAKING YOUR LEGS APPEAR ENDLESS.

Tucking in a top and adding a wide belt creates the illusion of a dress: Because the skirt is so long it means the proportions work beautifully and are so flattering, dividing the body into thirds (rather than half) and making your legs appear endless. Which mine are not… perfect for long-waisted people like me!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Jaeger quality is so good, in fact, it meant the jacquard fabric plus the lining made the top very thick so I actually had to get a skirt one size up from my usual size. I wanted to be comfortable throughout the day and also knew that a three course meal would mean more than a little stress on the skirt’s waistline (I was right…!)

I must just mention the navy roses fascinator: I may have been the only person wearing any sort of hat at the wedding, but to me the outfit just didn’t work without it. As I always say, what would Grace wear…? đŸ˜‰

(Finally – I’ve thrown in a rarely-seen photo of the husband and I right at the end – he looked too smart not to include him.)

DO YOU INSIST ON WEARING HATS TO WEDDINGS LIKE ME? AND WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WEARING CO-ORDS TO CREATE THE ILLUSION OF A DRESS? TELL ME IN THE COMMENTS OR TWEET ME @NOTLAMB!

Thank you so much Elizabeth – and yes I have to admit the skirt does move beautifully, it was made for twirling!

Absolutely gorgeous. You both look perfect. I would instantly copy your look if I could still show my arms like you can. And copy would be the highest form of flattery… But I won't haha.

I think this is my favourite ever outfit on you. Even more than the fairy princess. You look stunning and so serene and elegant. I love Grace Kelly too, in fact she's my style icon. Beautiful photos as always and thank you for waking your Lizzy O bracelet so beautifully. I think my fave accessory though is Keith! Lovely to see him. He looks as dapper as ever. Have a lovely weekend lovely lady xxxxxxxx

This is what I really like about you Catherine—you tell it like it is!! A midi is long…not just below the knees.
You look positively Grace-like! I actually have a collection of old hats (some that were my grandmothers) but I've only worn them to high tea and on Easter Sunday! I never thought about wearing them to a wedding—I think I'll start this tradition!!

Oh wow, Jodie – normally people only ever wear hats to weddings, so the fact that you wear them to high tea is absolutely wonderful! I think it's a shame people don't wear hats to a wedding any more, if you can't wear one to a wedding, when CAN you wear one…? Thank you for the lovely compliment by the way xx

Your 2/3 rule is really working here, you look tall and gorgeous and graceful and amazing! This dress was meant for you. I adore the last photo of you and Mr NotLamb. Also? I agree that it would be criminal not to wear a navy floral fascinator with that dress! xx

    • 20 June 2016 / 10:01 pm

Aww Lisa thank you so much – I agree about the fascinator, I really felt underdressed without it…! xxxx

  13. 16 June 2016 / 5:02 pm

It is hard to believe these are separates.

    You both look wonderful!

It's amazing how just the addition of the belt makes it look just like a dress isn't it, Suzanne?!

  14. 16 June 2016 / 4:33 pm

I think this dress was made for you Catherine! This bold floral print is so perfect on you and pink and navy are easily one of my favorite color combinations. Just stunning.
