A Colour Block Coat With Straight Leg Jeans #iwillwearwhatilike

A few degrees above freezing means a winter coat is inevitable, right? I’ve succumbed…

[Reading time: less than 3 minutes]

Okay, so not a full-on, thick, padded winter coat – here’s what I call a “mild winter” coat. It won’t be warm enough for a deep freeze, but on a cold, crisp morning when the day temperature then gets a little warmer, this is the style of coat that won’t have you melting by lunchtime.

This colour block coat* was gifted to me by JD Williams, a brand I’ve been championing a lot lately. It’s got my favourite autumnal colour camel as well as a splash of red. The sleeves are brilliant: they’re not wool like the body, but jersey. So you won’t have that restricted arm thing going on; easy bending and stretching are easily doable. You WILL reach that itch in the middle of your back wearing this coat.

Plus its styling is very, very clever…

Disclosure: I was gifted some of these pieces (marked*) by JD Williams under no obligation to post. This blog uses affiliate links at no cost to you. Full disclosure

SHOP THE LOOK:

Firstly, I’m loving the asymmetric zip. It creates a double-breasted effect without the buttons. That’s ingenious, making it nip it at the waist. Finally, the black panels down each side create an optical illusion to make you look longer and more shapely – perfect if you want to create a longer body shape and emphasise/create a waist.

10 out of 10 to JD Williams for such a clever, stylish coat.

In support of straight leg jeans

I’m going to say it: I think skinny jeans have FINALLY had their day. Sure, they still have a place in my wardrobe, but when actually ON me that place is tucked inside long boots. I may be about the #iwillwearwhatilike but personally, when it comes to jeans, I think an out-of-date style can be ageing. I have no scientific(!) explanation, that’s just what I think denim does to us.

All sorts of styles of jeans are “in” at the moment (as is generally the case these days), but straight-leg jeans are having a moment. For someone with chunky knees and calves, this is a blessing for me. Not only do my calves get the room they deserve, but CRIKEY these jeans are more comfortable to wear.

The straight-leg jeans* I’m debuting here are also JD Williams, purveyors of Trousers With Comfort. I’m a girl who hasn’t met an elasticated waistband she didn’t like, and this brand gets that. These jeans also have stretch and a high waist (woop whoop)!

They come in three lengths – I’m taller than average (5’7″ or 170cm) – but I still went for the long length. It allows me to roll up the jeans to create a deep cuff; I’d like them even deeper if possible.

A rekindled love for my brown cable knit sweater

And lastly – I wore my very, very old brown cable knit sweater for the first time in aaaaaaaages with the coat and jeans. (Scroll to the end of the images for some of the ways I’ve worn it and for some alternatives to shop.) If you’ve never considered brown before, now’s the time to do it. This one is almost orange and I’ve always been inclined to call it tobacco brown. If you want to buy just one sweater to see you through autumn, get one in a warm shade of brown. It’ll go with everything.

5 ways to wear an autumnal brown sweater…

I thought I’d show you some of the other ways I’ve worn this brown cable knit sweater so you can see the different ways it can be styled (I haven’t worn it on the blog in SIX years)!

The other times I wore the same sweater as shown above, all from 2011-2013: Top middle / Top right / Bottom middle / Bottom right.

In the post where I’m wearing sunglasses, I even apologised for wearing the same sweater yet again.

Pin for later!

Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link-up goes live every Tuesday at around 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only prerequisite is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Click here to receive an email reminder for the next #iwillwearwhatilike link up as soon as it’s live!

Linking up etiquette…

CLICK HERE to read the rules of linking up (and to grab the #iwillwearwhatilike button). It’s just good manners to link back to here – to leave a comment is even nicer!

PLEASE NOTE: This is for linking up WHAT YOU’VE BEEN WEARING ONLY. Non-outfit links will be removed! Also: by linking up you’re saying it’s okay for me to drop you an email to say the link-up is open – you can unsubscribe at any time.
