4 Ways to Style a Biker Jacket | Part One: With Skirts

I’m secretly quite happy that the weather will be getting cooler from now on, but only because I’ve missed wearing my favourite black biker jacket. As it’s still warm enough to wear skirts (without tights at the moment, but we shall see for how long), I thought I’d have a look back at the different ways in which I’ve paired my biker jacket with skirts and dresses.

I think it makes the perfect finishing touch to a skirt when you need to take the chill off – depending on how you style it, it can be as dressed down or dressed up as much as you like. So here’s four ways I’ve worn mine (whilst also getting my legs out) for some weekend inspiration for you.

Are you looking forward to wearing a biker jacket again, depending of course on the weather where you live? Do you favour classic black or do you have another go-to colour… let me know in the comments!

1. With a neutral pleated maxi skirt

(original post)

A biker jacket looks very different when worn undone, and it makes a great cover up for when you just want to stop your arms and shoulders getting chilly. It’s the perfect partner to a maxi skirt – the proportions are just right to create the illusion of long legs – and when teamed with a pretty floral (like the top I wore here) the contrast of hard and soft is a very striking combination. See Tuesday’s post for a similar hard-soft pairing.

2. With a soft floral dress, layers and statement boots

(original post)

There’s no reason you have to see the whole of a dress every time, and here I made a very floaty, summery dress work in colder weather by layering with a sweater, scarf and studded tan boots (I wore a slip and tights underneath for some extra warmth). The jacket takes on a much more structured appearance when done up and suits the scarf just peeking out at the neck. I especially like the quilted stitching of my jacket sleeves so that’s a detail worth looking for if you’re thinking of buying one ( is most similar to mine).

3. With a bright pleated skirt and ankle boots

(original post)

Again I wore the jacket done up, but here I wore the scarf (snood) over the jacket, simply because there’s just too much scarf to tuck underneath! I wore purple leather gloves as I think they more interesting than black ones, and instead of long boots I went with black tights and booties to contrast with the lovely deep blue of the pleated skirt. So another pleated skirt, but this time a midi rather than a maxi. The short length of a biker jacket works brilliantly with skirts and will always give that “longer legs” illusion I mentioned before.

4. Draped over the shoulders with a bright midi and boots

(original post)

Finally: what could be more perfect to drape around your shoulders for a night out than a biker jacket? It’s great with brights and it’ll add that touch of bad girl to any dress or skirt. On a practical level I find biker jackets great for keeping out the cold when you put one on and do it up; with boots you’ve got yourself a warm and stylish outfit for an evening out. What could be better than that…?

P.S. Did you see my Musings Monday post on Facebook? It’s all about the term “Real women” and it’s certainly got people talking…!

My jacket is from a couple of years ago so no longer available I’m afraid, but  is most like mine if you want to go for something similar. Here are the best biker jackets I could find (with varying price levels for all budgets, and I found as many as I could with great reviews):
