The difficulty of dressing for a winter wedding is in the warmth aspect. Wear a floaty dress and you’ll run the risk of hypothermia during the photo shoot (how brides and bridesmaids cope during winter photo shoots with bare shoulders and arms I’ll never know). Pile on the layers and a thick coat for the outside bit and you’ll probably melt inside at the reception (and look anything but wedding-y).
Getting the balance right is something of an artform, but I think I cracked the formula (once I’d tried on MANY different outfits and considered MANY different combinations)! One outfit I thought of was this pleated maxi skirt with this cashmere sweater – dressing them up with a statement necklace and heels – but I thought that I’d run the risk of being too hot at the reception in a cashmere sweater. Thank GOD I decided against it, not only because the outfit was overall very similar to the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses, but also because the reception was warm after all.
In the end I decided to go with my recently-acquired wide leg floral jumpsuit from JD Williams (UK link) – I’d seen my gorgeous friend Lizzy wearing hers with a cropped fur coat recently and I commented that it would make a great winter wedding outfit. (I last wore the jumpsuit in December as part of a post about new SS18 pieces.)
So I was looking in my wardrobe for a suitable cropped coat… nothing. However, what I did clap eyes on was my trusty Winser London pink coatigan (I love it with this outfit) – it’s the perfect smart, longline knit that’s not too warm indoors but also cosy enough for a chilly February photo shoot. Temperature-wise I was perfect: the coatigan was thick enough to stop me from freezing to death during the photos, and the jumpsuit (it has short sleeves) was just right for indoors and a warm reception.
The colour was spot-on for the pinky-red roses in the jumpsuit, so all the outfit needed was some heels and a clutch (I went with white so as to keep the overall look light) and some statement tassel earrings from Asos which I LOVE.

I was actually deciding what to wear on the morning of the wedding, can you believe (luckily it was local so we didn’t have far to go) – I had thought about staying home after our sad news about Riley last week. I didn’t want to leave him on his own if he was still unwell, but by Friday he was much, much better and my parents were more than happy to look after him. In the end we thought it would be good for both of us to get out the house and attend something that would be a happy event, and we’re so glad we did as we had a lovely time and a giggle with friends.
We couldn’t wait to get back to him though… we left before we got to the stage of drunken dancing with the bride’s uncle (not that I’m the type for that, lol) – our boy was very happy to see us, as we were to see him. And he was fine, though he got a LOT of cuddles when we got back.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who left a comment on Friday’s post about him from the bottom of my heart (Keith’s too) – I’ve replied to as many as I’ve had time for so far, I’ll reply to the rest as soon as possible. Rest assured they were all read, a lot of tears were shed over everyone’s stories of gorgeous doggies. Riley is SO much better and seems pretty much back to his normal (lazy!) self, but of course we’re fully aware of what he’s up against.
Hopefully with all the love and good vibes you lovely lot have sent our way he’ll be around for a while yet.

Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!
