A Long Dress Layered Over Jeans & My Seasalt Brand Ambassadorship

A couple of weeks ago I posted an outfit perfect for dog walking in the summer (though with this week’s rain it seems like summer has been and gone already…) – I mentioned that I’d be featuring Seasalt, the brand I was wearing, more over the coming months. Well here is the first post to tell you all about this fabulous Cornish brand!

Seasalt Cornwall is a UK company that I’ve been a fan of for quite a while since I discovered their amazing raincoats a few years back. Regular readers will recognise the floral Seasalt raincoat I’ve been wearing for years (it’s my go-to for walking Riley in the rain).

I’m really proud that Seasalt have asked me to be one of their brand ambassadors for 2017, and I couldn’t be more excited to tell you more about this very unique and responsible brand – not least because I am a fan of Cornwall, Breton stripes and dogs(!) – all of which play an important part in influencing their style.

Their designs include lots of sailor stripes, garment-dyed linens, organic cottons, in-house designed prints and relaxed shapes with more than a touch of the nautical… This suits me and my love of preppy style perfectly. They have a great selection of accessories and footwear as well as clothes (see details of what I’m wearing below) plus homewares and gifts – all in soft, seaside-inspired colours. And for those of you that are keen crafties they sell their own cut fabrics too, which is a great way to make your own items in a unique Seasalt print.

About Seasalt the company

I won’t talk about this too much today as I’ll save it for another post – I’ll tell you then about their values and manufacturing methods, all of which are admirable. With so much talk of fast-fashion and so-cheap-you-can’t-believe-it clothes it’s refreshing to find a brand that believes it has a great responsibility in all aspects of their business.

What’s also lovely about Seasalt is that they have a family-run feeling about the company (it was originally and still is today to a certain extent); however, they’re one of the biggest employers in Cornwall. Everything about Seasalt – from the designs to the photography to the website – just seems so wonderfully laid-back and Cornish… but don’t let that fool you, it’s a very sleek operation!

Today’s outfit

The dress I’m wearing in this post is a brand new design for SS17 – it’s the Chalet dress with a unique print inspired by sailing boat sails. I went to the Seasalt head office back in March and fell in love with it straight away, the bold colours and pattern are very “me”. Plus get this for clever details: the straps are adjustable so you can wear it the best way to suit you and your body shape/shoulders.

I’M NOT QUITE SURE HOW YOU’D DESCRIBE THIS LOOK, BUT IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING… (WONDERFULLY) ECLECTIC IS JUST ABOUT THE ONLY WORD I CAN COME UP WITH

Never being one to “just” wear a dress, I decided it needed some layering for spring. I succumbed to the 90s styling of wearing a strappy maxi dress over a plain white t-shirt (I couldn’t resist it forever!) but then did the very 2017 thing of layering it over jeans. THIS was the perfect look for me, especially when it wasn’t quite warm enough for the dress by itself.

If you saw the dog walking outfit from a couple of weeks ago you may recognise the same straw hatcotton messenger bag and sandals – I’ve also worn a grey Seasalt sailor square scarf in my hair. I love taking key pieces from a brand and challenging the way the pieces are styled. The collections as shown on the website are styled beautifully and very simply (gotta love those beachy backdrops!), but I like to switch up the feel every now and then and show that clothes from a brand like Seasalt doesn’t have to be styled the same way each time.

I’m not quite sure how you’d describe this look, but it’s a little bit of everything with the 90s layered tee, dress over jeans and 50s retro feel with the sunglasses and hair scarf. (Wonderfully) eclectic is just about the only word I can come up with… It doesn’t really matter, I love it!

What to expect from my ambassadorship

I’ll be featuring Seasalt every month or two on the blog and in between on social media – their colours and patterns lend themselves beautifully to Instagram as my popular picture with Riley proves! The posts will obviously reflect the seasons and what’s available and suitable for the months ahead… Expect a special giveaway in the run up to Christmas as well. I especially can’t wait for autumn and a raincoat feature (that’s just crazy talk coming from a summer lover such as myself) – their raincoats really are THE raincoats to own if you ask me.

Sizes, shipping, customer service, etc.

This is another area they excel at: Sizing. All styles come in sizes 8-20 (UK) with some pieces up to a size 24… That’s SO much better than your average high street 8-14 range. They also offer international shipping (prices start at £7.08) and delivery to the UK is free over £50 and free via Click & Collect in their stores.

Something great to note: Having visited their head office, I went to the customer service department and saw the team in action – they have every single item that’s available to buy right there on shelves in their office to touch and describe to customers over the phone. So if you want to know if a specific print will match the colour of a particular pair of shoes, they can walk a few feet and pick them out to be able to give you the answer.

How’s THAT for great service… Isn’t it a brilliant idea? It’s typical of their commitment to all things customer-orientated.

So I hope you’ve enjoyed this intro to all this Cornish-ness, and I promise to bring you some exciting and interesting posts to tell you more about this wonderful brand – not least from Cornwall itself which I plan to be doing a little later this year… Riley is going to love the long walks on the beach (and his Seasalt doggie goodies too)!
