What to Wear to a Windy Beach in Cornwall in Summer #iwillwearwhatilike

I thought it was about time I went back to my warm colours as I’ve been wearing a lot of neutrals and cool colours lately. Time for red, orange and pinks again (it is summer, after all)!

We went to Perranporth beach in Cornwall on Saturday: There was beautiful sunshine in the morning, but by lunchtime it clouded over and got rather windy. Nothing unusual about that for a British beach in July, but considering it was 30°C+ the other week we’d kinda hoped for maybe a little bit of sun…?!

Anyway luckily it wasn’t too hot for Riley, he rather enjoyed splashing about in the water to keep cool and we didn’t have to desperately search for shade to stop him collapsing from exhaustion, so in that sense the cloud was a welcome break. However it made dressing for the weather difficult: What DO you wear to a windy beach in Cornwall?

Thankfully I think I got it just about right with my orange Breton-stripe top and floral trousers. It was most definitely NOT warm enough for anything sleeveless, and the cropped trousers were handy for splashing about in the shallow pools and streams on the beach. I’m surprised I hadn’t paired these two together before: I think I’d always thought of the trousers as having a pink floral print. Although I’m someone who’d normally pair orange and pink without a second thought, I guess I was thinking Shall I wear orange with pink today… Oh look, the roses on the trousers are actually orange now they’re with those orange stripes. Who knew?!

Maybe I’m better at this colour thing than I actually thought (or maybe I’m worse)…

I love the accessories I chose for this outfit, namely the tassel earrings. Mine are from Mango, who have an amazing selection of statement earrings (including their own version of the much-coveted red tassel earrings which have been so popular this summer).

I’m also still wearing the pearl-effect sunglasses. They are without a doubt my go-to sunnies for this summer – they just seem to make everything look fun and summery. And finally, the red espadrilles which, alas, were Asos SS16… BUT because I love you guys so much(!) I’ve scoured the interwebs and found a selection of red espadrilles (AND tassel earrings) for you to shop – scroll down to the last image and you’ll find them there.

There you have it: What Brits wear to the beach in July. If it’s sunny it’s a bonus, if it’s hot and sunny it’s just freaky. When we drove back home to Devon later that evening we went through hideously thick fog and rain… Don’t say the UK doesn’t get the weirdest weather, it’s all true…!

Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!
