How to Wear Soft Tones of Blush and Blue in Winter #iwillwearwhatilike

How to Wear Soft Tones of Blush and Blue in Winter \ blue tapestry coat, blush pink sweater, camel beret, check trousers, pink ruffle ankle boots | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

Soft tones in winter are something of a comforting way to wear colour during cold weather I think.

We can often feel a little blue – especially when winter seems to be dragging on and on – and brights just seem to rub our noses in it. Wearing lots of bright colours at this time of year almost make me feel like they’re taunting me, saying “Woo hoo, it’s still winter! And you’re still cold! But we’re all bright and colourful and just reminding you that it most definitely isn’t summer, HAH…!”

So this weekend I put my soft tones colour preference in winter into action with a palette of blush pinks, toning wide leg trousers and a blue tapestry coat. Like last week’s shearling gilet outfit post, this outfit is mostly all old items but proves that with a few new accessories and new pairings you can still create totally on-trend and unexpected combinations.

The blue tapestry coat was from La Redoute several winters ago (they currently have this very similar blue jacquard coat) and I’ve featured it several times on the blog. My good blogging friend Michelle Tyler is a huge advocate of slow fashion and restyling items over and over again, and she mentioned she’s going to feature all the ways she’s worn an item when she features it again… I’m pinching that idea, MT! 😉

So scroll down for three more ways to style it – I’ll slip in one of those when I can/when I have time in future outfit posts. I personally LOVE to see bloggers featuring the same items more than once because I get a lot of inspo from seeing how they style something in many different ways.

SHOP THE LOOK:

The new(ish) additions this time were the camel beret (yes, still in love with berets), the faaaaaaabulous second pair of statement earrings I bought on my trip in Amsterdam last October (these are similarly fabulous – see the first pair I bought here) and the pink ruffled ankle boots from JD Williams. I’ve coveted these boots since I saw them last year when working with JD Williams on some SS18 content and they were kind enough to send me a pair. So all the pink and blue and camel/taupe/brown colours make up all these lovely soft tones that calm me a little more in winter.

And calm is something I need today… poor Riley is at the vet’s right now and I’m waiting on a phone call from them. He was incredibly poorly over the weekend and it all came to a head with us calling the emergency vet late Sunday night, he’s had to be put under today so they can do some tests to see what’s up. It’s AWFUL having children or animals when they can’t communicate what pain they have or what’s wrong with them, so we’ve had a very stressful night and morning so far. Keep your fingers crossed for us that he’s okay.

Anyway – the link up: please do add your outfits to #iwillwearwhatilike this week – and if you’ve added a link to here or my button to your post you may be featured next week.

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Linking up etiquette…

Absolutely loving these colours on you C. That beret … you are making me want to try one but sadly I don’t think they are a short hair hat .. least not on me!

Catherine, I am a big fan of restyling pieces over and over. It is so much fun to come up with new ways to show off a piece’s versatility. Love your tapestry coat and all the ways you styled it. – Amy

Love the beret and statement earrings together – and those sunnies rock! I just learned about Fashion Revolution (you can google it) and definitely support buying less things of better quality that you love to wear again and again. Thanks for promoting that concept. Hope Riley is better.

You are so dreamy in that camel beret Catherine. You should wear it as much as possible while the weather allows 😉
Thank you for picking up my idea of *other ways I’ve worn it* I’d really love to spread this theme through the blogging community. So many women look to us for fashion inspo. It kinda gives us all permission to REwear our clothes over & over & not feel pressure to always have something new. You know what I mean?
    Big love to Riley xx

Love printed textured coats, tapestry, jacquards, whatever. I’m checking out that site. Looks like they have several options. You did a great job of mixing patterns in this outfit. And the bag and boots are stunning!

Sorry about your pup. So stressful for you and Riley!

I love the idea of slow fashion. There are pieces in my closet that I love and find a lot of enjoyment from creating new ways to style them! For example, my tulle skirt. I ‘ve featured it on the blog 3 times already. lol. I didn’t know it but I was (an am) a proponent of slow fashion! lol. Thank you helping me put that to word! Anyway, I am loving the color blush right now, especially in the form of the sweater. It’s always fun to see what you’re styling from week to week! Thank you for hosting.

Love the whole outfit, but especially those shoes. I hope you get good news on Riley!

Softer tones are the way that I always feel most comfortable doing colour, dearest Catherine…so this lovely tapestry coat and plaid trousers combination is getting two thumbs up from me!! And I adore all the special little details you’ve included, too; the camel beret, the tortoiseshell bag, those pink ruffled booties (wow!) and your statement earrings take this outfit into truly “amazing” territory!! P.S. Robin and I had to say goodbye to one of our ferrets last week, so I’m very anxious to hear how your Riley is doing. Sending love and crossing my fingers that he’s making a full recovery.

  12. 13 February 2018 / 12:12 am

I hope Riley will be ok. Give him a wag and a kiss from me!

Yes I would like to see bloggers showing how an item has been styled different ways – I enjoyed seeing yours. I hadn’t thought about doing that myself before – would you mind if I nick that idea as well? I’ve worn the same item in different blog posts, but hadn’t linked them up before!

I love your wide-leg trousers; I had some similar many years ago and don’t know what happened to them and have been looking for some more ever since!
    Best wishes x

I had to laugh at your comments about bright colours in winter, taunting us. I’m wearing my tapestry Welsh wool cape for my linkup photo and I smiled when I saw your coat. I like your soft palette too.

I’m sorry to hear about Riley. I hope the prognosis is good. So distressing.
