How to Style a Blue Stripe Shirt, Over 40 Summer Style

Brights basics for summer: Striped wrapover Mango blouse black harem pants gold 45 Asos necklace red wedge espadrilles white fringed crossbody bag | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

I’ve wanted a classic blue stripe shirt for ages – I’d seen them on lots of bloggers and think they always look so fresh and summery. Somehow I’d not got round to getting myself one, simply because I was worried I’d end up looking like a clone if I styled it the same as everyone else (usually my reason for putting off buying something)!

However, when I saw this blue stripe shirt from Mango I changed my mind – rather than a standard button up shirt it had a wrapover front, a tie waist and fabulous long, fold over-able sleeves. Unfortunately – as is the case with just about everything I buy and then wear on the blog – it’s pretty much sold out apart from this one I found. (I’m so sorry!) But if you scroll down you’ll find more blue stripe shirt options I found… it seems Mango is THE place to go for the best selection.

I especially love this one for its classic oversized style and this one for its subtle frill detail.

Although it’s a classic print (narrow blue and white stripes? what’s more classic?) the shape is not, so it didn’t need much in the way of styling. I wore my so-comfy-they’re-untrue black harem pants (a great alternative to sweat pants and far more flattering at the ankle), the red espadrilles that have been such a colourful addition to several outfits both this summer and last, and the real talking conversation starter of the outfit…

The gold 45 necklace. How’s THAT for a great big piece of (somewhat tasteless) bling… Talk about aged 45 and proud!

Like t-shirts with your birth year on it, I’ve found a necklace with my age on it – just after my birthday, in fact, so I’ll get at least one year’s wear out of it before it seems a little passé. Though WHY Asos would make a necklace with 45 on it beats me – I reckon most girls who’ve bought it are half that age (or younger). But it makes for a nice bit of cheesy neck bling for a ‘girl’ (oh, the irony!) of 45 years of age.

SHOP THE LOOK:

I’m actually amazed we got any pictures at all on this photo shoot – half an hour earlier it was beautiful sunshine (the golden hour had just about hit) and we were ready to capture a few gorgeous images with some warm, low sun. However as soon as we walked up the path dark clouds came right over and the light turned blue.

Less than an hour later the heavens opened to the most torrential downpour I’ve experienced in a long time… If you saw my Instagram stories you may have seen us cowering under a tree whilst out walking the dog, soaked through to the skin. Not my idea of a lovely August – for goodness sake when are we going to get a decent summer’s day? The UK school holiday weather so far has been horrendous… please, give us a break from the rain, will you (someone? anyone?)

Little update on our continuing Wifi issues: We’re definitely moving to a new provider but they can’t take over the broadband until the week after next (but that’s the latest date, hopefully it’ll be sooner). Meantime I’ve asked my parents if I can be a Wifi scrounger and spend the day at their new house each day I need the internet – which to be honest is every day, no?

I can no longer access the internet on my phone (I don’t have 3G in my street, the joys of living in a country town) so I have to Instagram when I’m either out walking the dog or in some other area with 3G or free Wifi. Anyway I love their new home and it means I get to see them more, so it’s kind of a win-win…!

Anyway I won’t be able to come here every single day, so do bear with me getting posts up on time (it only really matter for the Monday and Friday link ups). But I’ll do my best to get as much done as I can on the days I get to take advantage of their super snazzy fast Weefee 😉

Hello Catherine, thanks for your lovely comments over at my blog. You are looking fabulous as ever. I have some fear, though, that the number 45 might be referring to the dreadful little US president. Let's just pretend it doesn't 🙂 xox

I love stipes, and striped shirts and shirtdress are my favorite! I wear a lot classic striped shirt and truly speaking I've never felt like anyone's clone. I believe that if someone is a confident person who has her own style then she will never look like a clone:).
I like your shirt which looks a bit like a kimono. And the necklace is fun!

You are adorable here Catherine in your ironic necklace and super-cute plaits!
I love the blue and white shirts too.
I have one and have not had it on the blog because of the "it's-everywhere-ness" of that current trend.
I LOVE mine baggy with skinny black jeans… especially with my short hair and slight boyishness of it all.

You have totally feminised this look and I LOVE.

You're like me Samantha, in that you're put off a trend that everyone's wearing…! I love the sound of the combo – you've described, I'd love to see it on your blog!!

      Thank you sweetie xx

Hi Catherine, I've not really jumped on the blue white stripe band-wagon, however I do have a shirt that's got plenty of wear over the past few months! Even my daughter has borrowed it! Lovely styled with your harem pants, and what a cute bag! Good luck without WiFi – I feel your pain already. x Jacqui

"45" is how the current US President is sometimes referred to, since he's the 45th president (and since some of us can barely stand to say his name.) Perhaps ASOS is making fun?

    • 10 August 2017 / 11:33 pm

Renee, I thought about this too, unfortunately, but just hate thinking about him so didn't want to say! But since you have said it, I'll chime in to say I was wondering too.

P.S. The shirt does look great on you.
