A Long Dress Layered Over Jeans & My Seasalt Brand Ambassadorship

A couple of weeks ago I posted an outfit perfect for dog walking in the summer (though with this week’s rain it seems like summer has been and gone already…) – I mentioned that I’d be featuring Seasalt, the brand I was wearing, more over the coming months. Well here is the first post to tell you all about this fabulous Cornish brand!

Seasalt Cornwall is a UK company that I’ve been a fan of for quite a while since I discovered their amazing raincoats a few years back. Regular readers will recognise the floral Seasalt raincoat I’ve been wearing for years (it’s my go-to for walking Riley in the rain).

I’m really proud that Seasalt have asked me to be one of their brand ambassadors for 2017, and I couldn’t be more excited to tell you more about this very unique and responsible brand – not least because I am a fan of Cornwall, Breton stripes and dogs(!) – all of which play an important part in influencing their style.

Their designs include lots of sailor stripes, garment-dyed linens, organic cottons, in-house designed prints and relaxed shapes with more than a touch of the nautical… This suits me and my love of preppy style perfectly. They have a great selection of accessories and footwear as well as clothes (see details of what I’m wearing below) plus homewares and gifts – all in soft, seaside-inspired colours. And for those of you that are keen crafties they sell their own cut fabrics too, which is a great way to make your own items in a unique Seasalt print.

About Seasalt the company

I won’t talk about this too much today as I’ll save it for another post – I’ll tell you then about their values and manufacturing methods, all of which are admirable. With so much talk of fast-fashion and so-cheap-you-can’t-believe-it clothes it’s refreshing to find a brand that believes it has a great responsibility in all aspects of their business.

What’s also lovely about Seasalt is that they have a family-run feeling about the company (it was originally and still is today to a certain extent); however, they’re one of the biggest employers in Cornwall. Everything about Seasalt – from the designs to the photography to the website – just seems so wonderfully laid-back and Cornish… but don’t let that fool you, it’s a very sleek operation!

Today’s outfit

The dress I’m wearing in this post is a brand new design for SS17 – it’s the Chalet dress with a unique print inspired by sailing boat sails. I went to the Seasalt head office back in March and fell in love with it straight away, the bold colours and pattern are very “me”. Plus get this for clever details: the straps are adjustable so you can wear it the best way to suit you and your body shape/shoulders.

I’M NOT QUITE SURE HOW YOU’D DESCRIBE THIS LOOK, BUT IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING… (WONDERFULLY) ECLECTIC IS JUST ABOUT THE ONLY WORD I CAN COME UP WITH

Never being one to “just” wear a dress, I decided it needed some layering for spring. I succumbed to the 90s styling of wearing a strappy maxi dress over a plain white t-shirt (I couldn’t resist it forever!) but then did the very 2017 thing of layering it over jeans. THIS was the perfect look for me, especially when it wasn’t quite warm enough for the dress by itself.

If you saw the dog walking outfit from a couple of weeks ago you may recognise the same straw hatcotton messenger bag and sandals – I’ve also worn a grey Seasalt sailor square scarf in my hair. I love taking key pieces from a brand and challenging the way the pieces are styled. The collections as shown on the website are styled beautifully and very simply (gotta love those beachy backdrops!), but I like to switch up the feel every now and then and show that clothes from a brand like Seasalt doesn’t have to be styled the same way each time.

I’m not quite sure how you’d describe this look, but it’s a little bit of everything with the 90s layered tee, dress over jeans and 50s retro feel with the sunglasses and hair scarf. (Wonderfully) eclectic is just about the only word I can come up with… It doesn’t really matter, I love it!

What to expect from my ambassadorship

I’ll be featuring Seasalt every month or two on the blog and in between on social media – their colours and patterns lend themselves beautifully to Instagram as my popular picture with Riley proves! The posts will obviously reflect the seasons and what’s available and suitable for the months ahead… Expect a special giveaway in the run up to Christmas as well. I especially can’t wait for autumn and a raincoat feature (that’s just crazy talk coming from a summer lover such as myself) – their raincoats really are THE raincoats to own if you ask me.

Sizes, shipping, customer service, etc.

This is another area they excel at: Sizing. All styles come in sizes 8-20 (UK) with some pieces up to a size 24… That’s SO much better than your average high street 8-14 range. They also offer international shipping (prices start at £7.08) and delivery to the UK is free over £50 and free via Click & Collect in their stores.

Something great to note: Having visited their head office, I went to the customer service department and saw the team in action – they have every single item that’s available to buy right there on shelves in their office to touch and describe to customers over the phone. So if you want to know if a specific print will match the colour of a particular pair of shoes, they can walk a few feet and pick them out to be able to give you the answer.

How’s THAT for great service… Isn’t it a brilliant idea? It’s typical of their commitment to all things customer-orientated.

So I hope you’ve enjoyed this intro to all this Cornish-ness, and I promise to bring you some exciting and interesting posts to tell you more about this wonderful brand – not least from Cornwall itself which I plan to be doing a little later this year… Riley is going to love the long walks on the beach (and his Seasalt doggie goodies too)!

I like Sea Salt, that is a fab dress! Congratulations on being brand diplomat, I anticipate seeing you in a greater amount of their stunning garments. Samish leather

This ambassadorship suits your "preppy with a twist" style to a tee!
    The perfect partnership.
I TOTALLY agree about the raincoats.
I have two….one extra long winter one and slightly shorter summerweight one.
    Both essential for Scotland.
Both used for daily dog walks, but still going strong.
The summer one must be over 5 years old now and the winter one 6 or 7.
I am waiting patiently for your giveaway!!! :oP

Congratulations on this latest coup Catherine. The brand have chosen well as you were a fan prior to them seeking you out which really speaks volumes. This dress is really lovely and I think your styling is really fresh.

    Well done x

Thank you Anna! I've been talking about them for a few years now, so yes it was a perfect fit πŸ™‚

Whenever I try a dress over jeans it looks off, but this looks great! What a fun print too!

    • 22 June 2017 / 4:51 pm

Thanks hon – I've had plenty of practice wearing dresses over jeans so I'm used to it… you should give it a try!

  5. 19 May 2017 / 7:00 pm

You look fantastic and I love that dress! I have never heard of this brand, but love the sound of them. I will have a mooch (sorry, mooch, is that a word used nationally?) Anyway, I will have a look lol

    • 22 June 2017 / 4:50 pm

Yes, you should definitely have a mooch Kerry (I take Riley for a pooch mooch)!! The dress is so pretty, isn't it – thank you hon x

I love Seasalt and their Cornwall feel and they even sell beautiful and unique Bernard Leach Studio hand thrown pottery in their stores. I'd visited the St Ives store regularly and never bought anything except a T shirt as a gift for my sister. Then I popped into the Canterbury store recently and came out with two dresses and a tunic! It was a deal but even so I had thought their clothes were too expensive. They are incredible value for great quality, ultra comfortable, stylish, organic cotton. I am so envious of you being brand ambassador and can't wait to see the items you feature.

Thanks Penelope – yes they're not cheap like your fast fashion shops but the quality is excellent and their ethics are admirable… Cheap, nasty clothes always cost a lot less than clothes designed and (part) produced at home, and ethical working practices are worth paying for over cheap labour I always think! x

I'm a huge fan of wearing dresses with jeans so I absolutely LOVE this outfit, Catherine. I don't know what it is about these photos, but they just make me smile. It must be your happiness shining through, I guess!
I have heard of Seasalt before but never really delved any deeper. I shall go and check out their website. It's always good to know when fabulous brands deliver abroad!

Seasalt have been one of my favourite brands for a few years now, so it's good to see them getting some love! I wouldn't normally wear a strappy maxi dress myself, but this is a clever twist that might perhaps work for me. πŸ™‚

    • 22 June 2017 / 4:45 pm

Thanks Fran – I like the fact that it's quite an unusual style of maxi…!

  9. 18 May 2017 / 7:29 pm

Another one who would have skipped right over that dress, but layered over jeans and with those sandals? Just divine and cool and funky. You nailed this, lady. What gorgeous photos, I love the portrait one with the HUGE tree behind you. xx

    • 18 May 2017 / 9:50 pm

I liked the dress before, but over the jeans I love it even more!!! thanks lovely Lisa x

  10. 18 May 2017 / 7:22 pm

I hadn't heard of this brand before! Love the side slit on the dress.

    • 18 May 2017 / 9:49 pm

Kathleen thank you, most people know them through their raincoats but they do so much more than that. I've been a big fan for a while πŸ™‚

  11. 18 May 2017 / 6:09 pm

Like Michelle, I would have skipped over this dress on the Seasalt site but I'm loving it!

  12. 18 May 2017 / 5:53 pm

You look glorious Catherine! I love this type of look and am a huge fan of breton stripes. I love how you've styled the dress over jeans. I always worry it would look bulky, but it really doesn't. Congratulations on the ambassadorship- it's very very well-deserved. I'm off to hunt for stripes now on their website! love Liz xxx http://www.whatlizzyloves.com xxx

    • 18 May 2017 / 9:48 pm

Thank you Liz – I thought it might be bulky too, but I made sure the t-shirt wasn't tucked in and smoothed over the top of my jeans… A good little tip there!! And behave yourself with the stripes, I know what you're like! πŸ˜‰ x

  13. 18 May 2017 / 4:10 pm

Head to toe adore your styling Catherine! I am being honest when I say I wouldn't have liked this dress had I seen it on the Sea Salt site. You've single handedly won me over, I do love a dress over jeans though πŸ˜‰ And that trilby is right up my alley!
Gorgeous golden hour pics honey xxx

    • 18 May 2017 / 9:28 pm
