How to Do Preppy Style in Winter at the Coast #iwillwearwhatilike

Cold weather preppy outfit for the coast: Brown Barbour jacket cream bobble hat and roll neck red tartan scarf black skinnies and riding boots | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style blog

You may know that I’m partial to a bit (or a lot) of preppy style in the summer, but only occasionally does that tendency spill over into winter for me.

However, a weekend down on the south coast in some pretty wet, windy weather called for some serious wrapping up, comfortable walking clothes/boots and waterproof everything… Waterproofs + a trip to the coast meant preppy, despite the lack of sun!

Just over a week ago we spent the weekend with friends who live down on the south coast – it was still February (just) so that is technically still winter. Come what may, I always, always count 1st March as spring – it’s just so much more positive than to think it’s the middle of March and it’s still winter (I mean come on, it’s so depressing)!

SHOP THE LOOK:

So for me, this was effectively the last outfit I wore in winter. It sure won’t be the last cold weather outfit, but it’s the last one worn for AW16 😉

To combat the weather I went for my super-comfy Naturalizer riding boots and my Barbour jacket – the ultimate in country-style brands (which although it’s technically more “Sloane Ranger” than preppy I think of them as sister styles). Again, like I do a lot this was an outfit I (foolishly) didn’t try on in the mirror before packing my bag for the weekend. I literally grabbed stuff I thought would work together, and the Barbour jacket came too because it’s perfect for wet, windy weather – plus I hadn’t worn it in ages.

The problem was: When I put it on on Sunday morning, I had a shock: WHY was it so much shorter than I remembered? I was certain it covered my bum, but no. Therefore I had to face the wind and the rain with an exposed legs and bum – and we were going on a 5-mile walk to the pub for lunch. The prospect of sitting in the pub with a wet bum was not good…!

LUCKILY the rain mostly held off till we got there, no wet bums were experienced and I actually stayed pretty warm despite how cold it looks in the photos.

The moral of the story: (Not what you think…) It’s actually, Don’t give your gloves to someone to hold while you take photos who walks very, very fast. By the time you’ve got your shots they’ve walked on miles ahead and you can’t catch them up – you just have to wrap your hands in your scarf in the meantime (pockets on jeans being not large enough to thrust cold hands into).

We live and learn…!

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Catherine, I am so glad your bum didn't get wet! Ha, ha. I love the way you told this story! And yes, I have had those experiences where I thought something fit quite differently than when I put it on! Usually, it is because it either, a)shrank in the wash, or b)I grew! Ha, ha. Anyway, you still look extremely stylish and cute! Love the color of that jacket! – Amy

Such a fresh combination that mustard coat with that red plaid! I just love it for early spring and would never have thought to put these colors together!

You're seeing out Winter in style, even if it was a bit bracing! I think of 1st March as the start of Spring because it makes sense to have three months per season. That said, I am looking forward to Spring Equinox when the clocks change…mainly because it makes doing outfit photos much easier!

With Vancouver having the "winteriest" winter ever – nothing but snow, snow, and even more snow! – I could SO use this adorable outfit in my life right now, dearest Catherine!! The black and white basics (jeans, boots, sweater, and beanie) are perfectly punched up by the rich colours of your Barbour jacket and plaid scarf…and I LOVE those cool oversized sunnies!! XOXO P.S. I have a crop top in my closet that I swear gets shorter every time I put it on!! ;D

What is really funny is that on seeing the shots I immediately thought "Where's your gloves Catherine?" as you looked like you had cold hands. And then I read on…
Anyway, the shots are fab, the outfit is very practical and even though the jacket felt short it really didn't look that way. Hurrah for the touch of tartan too giving that extra punch of colour.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
Thanks for the link up x

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you are such a friend, my dear Catherine, thank you so much for being one of your favourite outfits, humble!!!
About the cold weather definitely suits you, these photos are fantastic. I am hanging on to the cooler evenings and mornings because it is already becoming warm here.

My worst habit is storing clothes away and forgetting what Iv'e got! I'm wondering where on the south coast you are? Looking preppy and fresh as a daisy xx

Ah yes, I forget about my own clothes… like the way-too-short dress I forgot to put opaque tights on with. Sigh. These trials and tribulations are there to remind us not to take our extensive wardrobes for granted, no doubt!

I'm hoping my Autumn/Winter outfits are done, I'm trying to put a bit more Spring in my step 😉

My garment are constantly being mean and becoming too tight. No, it's not my love of carbs and dessert, NOT AT ALL! We've had an unusual amount to cold and wet weather here in southern California and my "rain boots" decided to quit on me. Again, MEAN!
Love your barn jacket, I too would want it longer.
    Thanks, as always, for hosting!

great outfit, great photos! i LOVE this jacket!!! And i have a style of boho in summer that doesnt and preppy in winter.. is that weird? I dont do boho at all in winter yet come sunny days and i'm all about that bohemian vibe! This look is perfect amount of a bit preppy and a bit country. Perfect weekend attire. Thanks for the link up Catherine xx

It does look absolutely freezing! But what a gorgeous location. I'm loving the outfit, it's exactly the kind of thing I would wear, although I would be worried about having a cold and wet bum too lol!!

    What lovely photos, Catherine!!
Being the model in cold weather is quite humbling—I don't know how "real" models do it!! I get so cranky when I'm cold!!

Awe, thanks so much for the feature, Catherine! What a lovely surprise. And to be featured next to so many gorgeous and fabulous ladies. I am honored. You look adorable in your cold weather gear, but a cold bum certainly is no good. Nor is a wet one, so I'm glad yours remained dry. And yes, never hand over your gloves! My hands are always the first thing to get cold! Thanks for the link up and ave a fabulous week.
