Styling Up Dark Jeans in Winter With Soft, Pretty Colours #iwillwearwhatilike

Cold weather outfit: Long white wool coat oversized lilac scarf camel fedora dark wash boyfriend jeans pink snakeskin lace up shoes | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

So apart from the dark wash of my jeans I have three colours going on here: Taupe, lilac and winter white.

Jeans are, of course, the ultimate go-to at any time of year – it’s just easy to slip into a rut of always wearing them the same way by throwing on the same jacket and the same shoes each time.

I always like to wear as many of my coats as possible, so having worn my black tailored coat, my bright orange animal print coat and one of my plaid coats this winter so far, I thought it was time I wore the soft winter white coat I have and love.

White coats (if you can avoid spillages) are one of the nicest to wear in winter because they will always look bright without being garish – and on a bitterly cold, windy day like the one we had this weekend some lightness was only too welcome. In fact you can’t really tell just how cold it was from these photos – but I can promise you it was freezing…!

I wore this outfit to pop into town to do a little shopping, a little SS17 window shopping and to go to a dentist appointment. Although not planned, white seemed appropriate for the dentist(!) – the rest of the outfit needed a bit of lift, so this is where the soft, pretty colours came in.

SHOP THE LOOK:

I’d already decided I wanted to wear my new Finery snakeskin lace ups (I’m crazy about the pinky/purple colour) – they are stupidly comfortable so perfect for shopping. I’m also wearing tights under my seam-piped jeans for warmth (they’re baggy enough to not be restricting) and went for grey just because… No reason, just because I didn’t want to go for black. The lilac scarf tied in with the shoes beautifully – one trusty camel fedora and one nude leather hobo bag (both old favourites) and the look was complete.

It must have been a very “me” outfit as when I went to the station to catch the bus, my niece was also there waiting for her bus home from work – apparently I was easy to spot straight away in my hat and the white.

Does this mean my style choices are getting predictable? Might have to do something about that…! 😜

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!
The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

The only thing that is predictable about you, is that you stand out in a crowd because of your uniqueness and style. Nothing needs to be changed here.

oh and lovely coat. Like you I found out that a big scarf is so much nicer than a smaller one. Richer. That colour is much better than the black and white one I have (so boring).

I love this look! My post today was about softer colors. Most of the time I am a bolder colored girl but every now and then I like the quietness of soft colors. Color is so connected to my brain, it effects me a lot. It can stress me, make me happy, relax me, etc. Oh well I got carried away! Great post! Cheryl Tucker at Northwest Mountain Living.

Catherine, this outfit looks so warmilicious! Yes, I just made that up. That white coat is a beauty and the scarf is perfect. I love purple by the way, so yes to the scarf and the shoes. Your nude, camel accessories compliment the whole outfit by adding more of a neutral color and additional texture. Great look. I don't think you are getting predictable, I think it's just family…they always know who we are. Ha, ha. – Amy

Great…now you've got me jonesing for a white coat for winter, dearest Catherine!! And this when I thought I couldn't be any more ready to let the season go!! Not that white doesn't also work for spring, of course…but this look is just so expected and fresh at this time of year. Love, love, LOVE the purple plaid scarf, too!! XOXO

  15. 13 February 2017 / 7:26 pm

I'm going to wear my white coat today too – it's a real pick-me-up. I love how all your pinks play together in this outfit, but especially the shoes!! And the camel is a great soft accent. Thanks for the linkup.

I've been wanting to get a white coat for a while and actually saw one I loved in a charity shop over the weekend, but I'm not sure I could keep it clean for even 5 minutes… The scarf is very pretty with the coat, and your shoes are fabulous!

Thanks for the link up & have a great week!

Thanks for the link up party again this week. I love your girl about town outfit, especially with the addition of those shoes – they're such a stylish twist. I wish I could wear winter white, but I'm way too messy to keep it smart.
As for personal style, well mine seems to change from day to day. I just love changing things up for a different look.
    Have a fab week x

I honestly don't know how I keep mine clean, Anna – though at least when I eat I've taken the coat off (otherwise it wouldn't be safe)!!!! thanks hon x

  19. 13 February 2017 / 4:49 pm

Love the coat. And the hat just flatters both the coat and the wearer.
As to personal style: I probably didn't have it til over 40 (or maybe even over 50!) but do have it now. Even my university students – the women anyway – have commented.
