How to Style a Short-Sleeved Coat | Jaeger Alpaca Duster Coat with Winter Neutrals

I’m sure you know the feeling: Sometimes you see an item of clothing that you instantly fall head over heels in love with and can’t stop thinking about it (of course you do)!

I did that with this alpaca duster coat from Jaeger when I featured it on my Facebook page… It was love at first online sight.

The lovely people at Jaeger were kind enough to gift me the coat (cue excited squeals), and once I’d stopped stroking its lovely alpaca furriness after taking it out the box, it suddenly occurred to me: How do you style a short-sleeved coat? Like sleeveless sweaters, it’s one of those contradictory items of clothing that’s designed to keep you warm, but has half of it missing…!

Luckily the UK is enjoying one of the mildest Christmases ever, so thankfully it was more than warm enough to wear it last weekend. (I heard Christmas Day might get up to 18°C/65°F which is about what we sometimes get in the summer – absolutely crazy!) But the mild temperatures last weekend meant that all this gorgeous coat required was a long-sleeved sweater underneath.

In much colder weather I’d wear a thick roll neck sweater and long gloves with it instead – cashmere ones would be nice – so as long as you’re suitably dressed with enough warm layers the short sleeves aren’t a problem (unless you’re in minus figures with a biting cold wind, and to be honest I probably wouldn’t venture outside if it was that cold)!

As I’m suffering with sciatica at the moment from a slipped disc (you can read how that happened here), I’m restricted to loose everything and flat shoes right now so these orange lace-up ballet flats look cute and keep me from killing myself in heels (in a vain attempt to look cuter). In fact what you don’t see in these pictures is the walking stick I’m currently using, though keep an eye out for my annual bloopers and outtakes post on New Year’s Day, you might just see it…!

Do you wear short-sleeved coats or sleeveless sweaters, and if so how do you style them? Tell me in the comments!

I am glad someone else also sees the contradiction of short sleeves (or no sleeves) with a clothing item which is supposed to keep you warm. I never get it either when women wear a tanktop with boots. But I think this coat is designed to wear those very long gloves that have become fashion this fall. Nice coat.

I think you're right about the long gloves, Greetje – Judith recently did exactly that with her short-sleeved coat and looked sensational. Good job I have some, they're going to come in handy! Thank you x

That looks like a beautiful coat, and so cosy, even if it's not full-length sleeves!

Hope that your sciatica heals up soon!

The warm tones of the shoes, the bag, and your hair look amazing together. I really adore the Jaeger coat too. I have a sleeveless camel coat which is perfect for transitional weather, but not so good when it is (rarely) freezing.

Aww thank you Lisa – you're right about these coats being not-so-good when it's f-f-f-f-reezing. But as I mentioned I try not to venture out at all when it's THAT cold…!!!!!

I'm with Samantha—those flats compare to heels any day of the week! (Of course I am biased since 10 minutes before reading your post, I ordered a red pair—great minds, you know!) And as for the sleeve length issue—arm warmers are a great addition! I made two pair last winter and love them! jodie

    Firstly…..Manicure!! Hello!! That looks amazing.
And, as for "looking cuter" in heels….are any shoes as cute as these orange Ghillies?? I don't think so!
I think they are perfect. (Although my toes would be in danger of snapping off up here!)
Your coat looks cosy (what an amazing gift) but these short sleeved or sleeveless coats ARE tricky.
At first, I thought a sleeveless or short sleeved coat was a complete waste of time, but once you fall in love with an item there is always a way around any troubles.
I have a vintage 1950's coat with 3/4 sleeves and I always wear long cosy wool sleeves and wrist warmers.
Layers are always the answer! :oD
    A great look.

Funnily enough I've seen a few short-sleeved coats since posting this, and they always have gloves with them!! Glad you like it, Samantha… thank you! x
