How to Nail the 70s Trend Without Wearing Flared Jeans

70s style without wearing flared jeans | Midi skirt, roll neck, shades of brown and orange
Yesterday I posted a sneak peek of my new bag“The Catherine” by Yosa (named after me!) – and as promised here’s the rest of the outfit. This is what I wore to Paris the other weekend, and I wanted to nail the 70s trend in shades of orange and brown but without wearing flared jeans. But how to go about it, I hear you ask…?!

It’s a simple case of ditching the jeans and making sure you get the right A-line midi skirt and block-heeled boots. Throw in a roll neck and huge sunglasses and you’ve totally nailed it (even more so if you go for sludgy/autumnal colours like I’ve done).

This classic look has been a favourite of mine forever – it makes me think of movies from the late 70s starring Jane Fonda or Meryl Streep. I’m sure there was one from around that time where the actress in question was a journalist and wore this exact kind of outfit, but I can’t for the life of me think what it was. The closest I can think of is Jane Fonda in The China Syndrome – but if you can name the movie I’m thinking of then please tell me!

THIS CLASSIC LOOK OF ROLL NECK, A-LINE MIDI SKIRT AND BLOCK-HEELED BOOTS HAS BEEN A FAVOURITE OF MINE FOREVER – IT MAKES ME THINK OF MOVIES IN THE LATE 70S STARRING JANE FONDA OR MERYL STREEP

What you can’t see from these pictures is that the gorgeous tan suede boots are OTK (over the knee) – this is a perfect solution for that annoying gap you sometimes get between the top of knee high boots and skirts that are described as midi but are, in fact, knee length. Unlike a lot of retailers, I personally don’t think midis and knee length skirts are the same thing – to me, a true midi has to be below the knee and above the ankle.

So hats off to Asos for selling a midi skirt that is truly that, as well as these OTK boots with heels that are covered in the same fabric as the upper (I love boots made with ‘matching’ heels).

Are you a fan of the 70s look, and have you tried the midi skirt version like I have… What did you wear to achieve it? Tell me in the comments or tweet me @notlamb!

They say that if you remember wearing a trend the first time it was popular, you should not wear it when it comes in style again. Years ago, I asked my fashion conscious daughter about this. She was barely out of high school at the time. My daughter told me to disregard this idea, as she had seen styles go out and then come in style again just in the few years between middle school (age 11 to 13) and the age she was then (18). I agree with my daughter, we should wear whatever looks and feels good on us and not worry about if and when it was popular before.

You nailed this seventies look. Actually, it looks better on you than it did on many of us (like me) who were teenagers in the 1970sl

Thank you Jacqueline – and thank you! I thought it was quite full-on myself but I'm glad you saw it as toned-down… I'll take it as a compliment x

Very pretty Catherine. Even though I am totally NOT into the seventies look (I was 16-26 in the seventies, been there, done that), I will say that this outfit looks tempting.

I love this outfit – a great 70s look! It's funny because not too long ago, I would have hated the orange/brown combo. I think it's because my mom dressed me in it in the 70s all the time (at least I wear it in every single photo I have of myself from my childhood), and I remember really not liking it… Funny how things change…

Thank you my lovely! And haha I think I probably would have thought the same about those colours – similar to the time when black leggings were THE thing to wear in the late 80s/early 90s, then when they went out of fashion I said I would never, ever wear them again as they were probably the most awful thing ever.

What happened a few years ago? Leggings came back big time, and of course I wore them. Never say never…!!!

This is so funny: I just did a post on 70s fashion with orange and brown clothes, and caramel boots. In my case, I tucked brown corduroys into the boots, but I'm a huge fan of the a-line skirt with 70s boots look. (And, yes, a midi must at least come below the knees.) I wish I could still wear heels but my decimated back can't take them anymore. Your boots are gorgeous. Over the knee boots are great for disabled women who use wheelchairs or scooters because our knees get so cold in the winter! I'm still looking for a good pair.

I think the movie you're thinking of is Network with Faye Dunaway from 1976. I featured her in another post on 70s style. I'll tweet it to you.

You're right about OTK boots and keeping knees warm, Charlotte – I for one am glad they go up higher for that very reason!

I think you might have hit the nail on the head with Faye Dunaway in Network, I hadn't thought of that one. And what a coincidence about us both doing brown and orange and 70s!! Thanks sweetie x
