How to Style an Oversized Tartan Scarf Yet Another Way

Autumnal tones with an oversized tartan scarf
As it’s nearly Christmas I thought I’d give you yet another way to style another oversized tartan scarf… I have no idea how to stop buying these things – I am totally obsessed!

I have to admit I didn’t actually check this outfit in the mirror before I left the house at all. This completely goes against my rule of always making sure your outfit works in a full-length mirror. The tartan scarf and suede booties were already downstairs by the front door (not put away from the previous wear, tut tut), and I grabbed the longline camel blazer without trying it on with the rest of the outfit.

But somehow it all worked together, and I’m so pleased it did – it was one of those ‘I-really-hope-this-works-because-I-love-all-the-pieces-I’ve-put-together’ outfits…! The finishing touches that I love were the classic driving gloves (people should wear this style more I think) and the gorgeous Marc Jacobs cat eye sunglasses I received from the Sunglasses Shop. The periwinkle blue colour was a lovely contrast to all the warm tones – I think I’ll be wearing these throughout spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Do you ever throw together outfits without checking them in the mirror first – and do you find they work? Or not…?! Do share in the comments!

I don't think I've EVER left home without checking my outfit – front and back! – in a full-length mirror first, dearest Catherine!! πŸ˜‰ But seriously, how could all these fabulous pieces of yours NOT work together?! The boots, the coat, that tartan scarf, and those fun sunnies make up a perfect wintery mix!! Plus, great minds think alike…I just happened to treat myself to a pair of "driving" gloves today!! XOXO

Normally I wouldn't dream of doing it, Monika… but sometimes I have days when I'm really not bothered how coordinated I am – and I guess I end up looking like a bit of a bag lady, albeit a stylish one (if that's not a contradiction in terms)?!! It was a case of fingers crossed for this one, and it somehow paid off!! Thank you, oh lovely driving-gloved one xx

Aww thanks Katie – they're quite unusual, aren't they? Make a change from black πŸ˜€

I sometimes change an outfit, f.i. because I want to get rid of the high heels. The times I just throw on something and it turns out great can be counted on one hand. Really. But it does happen, grin.
Glad you put on your blue glasses. It adds a bit of colour and brings out the blue in the scarf.

Thank you Greetje! I often change bits of an outfit before I leave the house because I check it in the mirror TOO much – maybe I over think it! Great outfits I didn't check in the mirror can be counted on just one hand for me, too πŸ˜‰

The sunglasses are what makes this outfit, really fab idea as they pick out the colour in the scarf, and blue just contrasts so well with camel. Very stylish indeed! x

    • 18 December 2014 / 8:54 pm

It was lucky that there was blue in the scarf, Porcelina – as I didn't even think about it! My sunnies were new so I just wanted to wear them whatever. A happy accident! Thank you hun as always xx

Thank you Daniella – I can see you wearing these glasses, come to think of it ;)) xx

  13. 12 December 2014 / 8:56 am

Great outfit. Chic and warm. And I love the sunnies.
I often have the opposite problem. I think of an outfit and it makes sense in my head but when I put it on…. naaaah, not so much. For me it is not just about what goes together, but also how it fits my body shape. Unfortunately, these can be two VERY different things.

    • 14 December 2014 / 12:50 am

Agree with you 100% on all points, Sabrina – I often have moments when it doesn't work, even though it did in my head!!!! Thank you hun for your lovely comment xx

I do look at my outfits in a full length mirror but rarely with shoes on because I keep my shoes in the garage and we do not wear shoes in the house. It's a pain but I've gotten use to it that I can sort of tell if the shoe will work or not. I am in love with those sunglasses and how they bring out the blue in your scarf.

Oh gosh I'm not sure I could with not having my shoes around, Alice!! Thank you my lovely x

  15. 12 December 2014 / 3:50 am

Haha, sometimes I don't look in the mirror either, but it only happens when I'm in a rush and I have a feeling the outfit works well. You've had so much practice, you just knew this would look good! Love the scarf and gloves.

Aww Nathy that's nice of you to say!! I definitely don't always get it right though, and that's even when I've done it in the mirror…!! x

I've wanted another long loose blazer after getting a grey striped one I wore in October, Kathryn – they're surprisingly versatile and create a really great shape! Thank so much for your comment x

  17. 11 December 2014 / 6:59 pm

Hi Catherine, I sometime have it the other way around. I think 'nay' when I look in the mirror, then run out of time to change and to then later find out it is actually OK. Even did that this week with the outfit I'm wearing in my latest post! Only when I saw the photographs I had the surpize it was a 'working'' combination. The mirror doesn't always tell the truth….I love your throwntogether outfit!

    • 11 December 2014 / 11:52 pm

Oh I get that too, Irmin – and also when you think it's great in the mirror and then the photos prove it didn't work at all!!! Glad you like this, hun x

  18. 11 December 2014 / 6:40 pm

It most definitely works together, C! Love those gloves and booties. xox

    • 11 December 2014 / 11:51 pm

I agree with you about the gloves, Patti – driving gloves tend to be scoffed at a little but I LOVE them!! Thank you my lovely x

    • 15 December 2014 / 2:54 pm

Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, too! xox

  19. 11 December 2014 / 5:50 pm

What a great look, Catherine! Everything works so well together.
