8 Ways to Wear Boyfriend Jeans

8 Ways to Wear Boyfriend Jeans
Fancy a post that’s not about Black Friday? How about a straightforward Ways to Wear post – I thought I’d give you a rest from sales, sales, sales and talk boyfriend jeans instead!

Unlike skinnies, boyfriend jeans are a perennial favourite that can be worn all year round. With t-shirts and sandals in the summer, blazers in the autumn and winter coats and ankle boots in the winter, they’re one of my favourite styles to wear. They have enough room for a little overeating in the colder months (food baby? What food baby?) and don’t make me too hot (like skinnies do) in hot weather.

I basically have three pairs of boyfriend jeans: one distressed with a deep hem, one darker denim in a more snug fit, and one in a light wash which are really loose. I like to vary the way I roll the hem – sometimes deep, sometime rolled – as it makes a big difference with the footwear you’re wearing. Here’s just some of the ways I’ve worn them in the last year or so… I hope it gives you some inspiration.

Are you a fan of boyfriend jeans? If so, what’s your favourite way of wearing them – do share in the comments! (And tell us if you’ve ventured into mom jeans territory – how have you found them, I’d love to know 🙂

Winter double denim & cozy knit
1. With double denim, knitwear and ankle boots (original post)
This is such a great throw-on outfit for this time of year – as it gets colder I’d add a couple of pairs of slouchy socks and a scarf. One of my favourite looks from last winter.

Neutrals & boyfriend jeans with chunky sandals
2. With neutrals, a statement belt and chunky sandals (original post)
More of a warmer weather outfit, but this shows how accessories make all the difference to a jeans-n-top look. I love all the textures and subtle pattern in the leopard print belt.

Neon pink and black with distressed denim - Over 40 fashion
3. With a bold neon top and black blazer (original post)
Despite the jeans being both loose fit and distressed, the classic black blazer will always smarten any pair (no matter what their state). Together with high heeled sandals, a deep rolled up hem on this pair somehow elongate your legs when your ankles are exposed, I’m not sure how or why…!

Camouflage jacket, boyfriend jeans
4. With contrasting camo and sheer florals (original post)
I think the distressed jeans would have been too much with this look – the camo jacket and pretty florals add enough interest without having to throw in holey denim as well. A great blend of masculine and feminine.

White sweater, boyfriend jeans, nude pointed heels
5. With layered knitwear and heels (original post)
I loved this snood and sweater combination, and adding my fave (and oldest) boyfriend jeans was the icing on the cake. I’m not always one for 100% comfort so went for ladylike nude pointed heels and continued the theme with nude-coloured accessories – perfect for the lighter wash denim.

Sequinned kimono, purple cowl neck sweater & distressed denim
6. With a glitzy statement coat (original post)
Or in this case, a sequinned kimono. What better way to tone down an over-the-top, huge glitzy piece than with distressed boyfriend jeans? I wore this to LFW and would have felt far too dressed up if I’d added smart trousers instead.

Leopard & black coat with boyfriend jeans
7. With brogues and an oversized two-tone coat (original post)
I went the whole hog with the masculine chic here: patent brogues, the husband’s sweater, a button-down shirt – not forgetting the wonderful Zara leopard and black two-tone coat. As I was paid a lovely compliment by a French waiter when wearing this outfit I consider it a winner.

Boyfriend jeans & layers
8. With black ankle boots and layered knitwear (original post)
Another layered knitwear look, but this time with bolder, darker boots and accessories. A little harder and more masculine than the nude colour combinations of outfit no.5.

Here’s a great selection of boyfriend jeans I found online – some distressed, some not, some dark wash, some light – something for everyone!

Love boyfriend jeans but your styling is by far the best. Many times it just looks clownish. I've saved your images for inspiration!

I love all the looks, especially the kimono:) So pretty! I don't think baggy boyfriend jeans are very flattering on me, so I go for slimmer styles.

    • 1 December 2014 / 10:37 pm

Aww thanks Ginnie – I sway between baggy and slim, I just stick to one style (don't know if that's good or bad really)! C x

I haven't yet found a pair of boyfriend jeans that suits me and I think part of the problem is I'm not sure how to style them so I love this post for all the inspiration!! You look amazing in all of these looks.

Oh I love a good pair of boyfriend jeans and all your styles are amazing! I either style them very casually with trainers or heels and a blouse for a more sophisticated style! Love, Kirsten xx

Funny how they work so well with heels, isn't it Kirsten?! Thank you my lovely x

Well, my response to how do I wear my jeans, is that I don't. No, not at all. Not boyfriend, girlfriend, or any other friend. Reason: thighs! Lots and lots of thigh and very small waist. Getting into jeans makes me look like a snake that ate an egg and has not digested it!

Surprisingly, you can live without jeans. I do like your knitwear combos though.

Gosh you belong to a very small minority, Rosemary – I knew a girl once who never, ever wore trousers of any description, and that included jeans of course. I kind of like that about someone, it makes you really interesting to say you don't wear or own a pair of jeans. Makes you really mysterious…!!

And thank you for your lovely compliment x

I wear boyfriend jeans all the time. I love seeing how other people style them. I think my favorite is the one with the cream short sleeve sweater, the leopard belt and the great hat. Casual chic perfection!

I am a huge fan of boyfriend jeans! For me they are way by far the most comfortable type of jeans to wear. Lately, I have been obsessed with distress jeans.

I love boyfriend jeans on other people. Just not on me. I tried to find a pair this summer….and had a couple of problems with them. First, I can't keep them up. When I tried them on and put my hands in the pockets, they almost fell off. Also, I can't get them long enough. I love the look of them rolled up with heels or flats. But the jeans I tried at J. Crew and at Gap, even when rolled down, were too short on me for winter wear. Three inches of bare skin above an ankle boot in a Canadian winter….brrrrrr…too cold. So like Sara, I'm sticking with my skinnies for tucking into high boots, and with my straight leg jeans for wearing with my ankle boots. Love your looks here, though.
BTW…Mom jeans are making a come-back? Please say it isn't so.

    • 1 December 2014 / 12:34 am

There are (surprisingly) a lot of different fits of boyfriend jeans, Susan – mine definitely don't fall down on me, but they're not super-baggy. I couldn't possibly wear mine with a gap when it's super cold, so I wear tights underneath (can't do that with skinnies usually!) and then about three pairs of slouchy socks with my ankle boots. No cold ankles for me!!

But as I mentioned to Sara, there are always certain styles in everything that we just can't wear. For me, it's dresses that don't have a waist… just awful on me, but I love them on other people.

Oh and yes mom jeans were THE style for 2014 – not that I tried them myself!!! C x

Great looks – I love the cozy knitwear, especially. xox

  13. 28 November 2014 / 7:10 pm

    Great post and recap 🙂

  14. 28 November 2014 / 4:49 pm

At 5'3 I…just…can't….do…it! Except with heels but that doesn't fit my current lifestyle at all unfortunately. So I returned mine. Still love them on other people. I'm going to stick to skinnies for now, which for petites are a godsend… I appreciate the non black friday related post!

    • 1 December 2014 / 12:29 am

Aww that's a shame, especially if it's a style you really like Sara! But there are lots of things that don't look good on me that I'd love to wear… it's the same for most of us. Thank you sweetie! x
