Rainy Day Breton Stripes With a Trench and Wellies

Sequinned Breton stripes, trench and wellies

I think most Brits have accepted that autumn has come early, and our August Bank Holiday Monday was a wet, dull affair.

No great surprise, but it would have been nice to have had a few days of sun in August! On the bank holiday I went with a Breton top and trench combination (which always looks great with jeans and wellies) – you basically can’t go wrong with this classic look as I doubt it’ll ever date.

Even though I have quite a collection of different Breton stripe tops now, I added a little sparkle with my prized possession: my Les Petites sequinned stripe sweater (also worn here). I bought it in Paris in May and you can still still buy it online (reduced to €109, or about £86), which actually made me quite excited for some reason. I have no idea why – I already own one?! Maybe I’m excited for you at the prospect of you being able to buy one in the sale 😉

Have you started to embrace autumn yet or are you in one of those places that continues with heat until Christmas (hello, Florida), and do you ever wear the Breton stripe/trench coat combo like me? What other classic combos do you wear? Do share in the comments!

The weather seems to have perked up a little bit here in Birmingham. It's still not hot as such (apart from odd days of heatwave), but I have put the trenchcoat firmly back on it's hook.

    Hi Catherine,
I love sequins, bought this great grey soft tank top with side panels that were sequinned, decided that it would look great under a black blazer, could accessorize it at bit with some great necklace, but when I put it on at home, I chickened out. Seeing this pic today, I have given it a wash, and I'm going to try again, so thanks for inspiration. Also, the eyelashes, what do you think, were you pleased with them? I've been thinking of these for a while, not knowing if I should take the plunge. thanks for great post. — Nancy

Thank you Nancy – I'm glad it's given you some inspo!! Sequins are tough to wear in terms of confidence but sometimes their loveliness overrides any feelings of self-consciousness I think…!

Oh gosh I forgot to reply about the eyelashes, so sorry! I have had them before, but not for a few years – I absolutely love them as you can get away with no eye make up really easily. I still do my eyebrows and perhaps a little mascara on the bottom eyelashes but that's it. You do need to get some infills after a couple of weeks or so as they start to drop out. But also, it's not good to have them done a lot as it's not good for your eyelashes. But they're great now and then 🙂

Applause for being able to look so good in wet weather and wellies. That shiny sweater is indeed so nice with this outfit. I would love to buy it at this reduced price but the neck is too high for me. I know that is not going to flatter me.

A trench and wellies. It doesn't get more quintessentially British. Those eyelash extensions look lovely too (not that you need them)!

This is such a pretty look! Breton stripes and a trench are a fall go-to for me. Hello from Iowa, USA!

Heat all year round it is for me over here. Nothing interesting at all and wishing I could wear the wellies and trench like yours over here. I guess grass is always greener on the other side =D

P.S. You've been nominated the Versatile Blogger Award on my blog. If you'd like to participate, do have a look at my recent post. If not, it's ok too =D

That's what I love about this top, Marea – it looks like it's wet from a distance 🙂

It's the first day of Spring here in Australia today and I couldn't be more excited!

    • 1 September 2014 / 1:08 pm

It's almost Fall here in Missouri, center of the USA, and after our hot summer, we're excited, too. Enjoy!

  14. 31 August 2014 / 10:23 pm

I love the classic pairing of stripes, a trench and wellies! That reminds me to pull out my trench coat this week. Here in Vancouver, the rain and cooler temperatures started last week. Fall is definitely on it's way and an outfit like yours above will become my new staple while trudging through the long rainy months ahead.

    • 7 September 2014 / 5:27 pm

Sounds more like our kind of weather here in the UK, Dusty! Glad to give you some inspiration x

  15. 31 August 2014 / 10:10 pm

We're in the heat till Christmas! Thanksgiving Day anyway – but I still love to see your transitional outfits, and this striped top is great. xox.

  16. 31 August 2014 / 9:17 pm

Fabulous outfit! I've always wanted a pair of Hunter wellies, so I think this year will be the year I actually get some! x

    • 7 September 2014 / 5:26 pm

Oooh yes I'd love some coloured ones, I agree!

  17. 31 August 2014 / 8:21 pm

August has been such a let down! It was quite nice today though but still a little chilly. I'm loving the sparkly twist on the classic Breton stripe top! This is how to do rainy day chic!! 🙂

    Take care,
    Daniella xox

    • 7 September 2014 / 5:25 pm

Yep, August was preeeeeeeeetty disappointing, I have to admit!! Thanks Daniella my lovely x

  18. 31 August 2014 / 6:37 pm

Really like this outfit, Hunters and a trench are perfect for this kind of weather!

Simply perfect! You look great in this classical outfit.

  20. 31 August 2014 / 3:24 pm

We are just on the edge of fall here in Chicago – but it is so close!! Summer is just hanging on though – high of 84 today. I am so ready boots and sweaters!!

    • 7 September 2014 / 5:24 pm

Just hanging on at 84, Ashlea?! We rarely get that sort of heat even at the height of summer!!

  21. 31 August 2014 / 1:59 pm

We have had the worst summerweather ever… trenchcoats and trousers are my daily uniform and I couldn't wear my light summer dresses at all.
BTW you niece has done a great job 🙂

Yes I noticed you'd been saying you'd had a rubbish summer, Annette! That's quite unusual for Germany, isn't it…? Thank you (re. the eyelashes) – I''ll tell her! x

  22. 31 August 2014 / 1:29 pm

Love this combo. Here in LA we're probably in another 6-8 weeks of hot, dry weather. 🙁 (Sad face because we're in a terrible drought right now.)

    • 7 September 2014 / 5:23 pm

Oh gosh noooooooo… I can't imagine having HOT weather at this time of year, never mind a drought! You can have our rain in exchange for sun any day :))
