How to Style the Coloured Trainers (Sneakers) Trend

How to style New Balance coloured trainers/sneakers
I’d been deliberating jumping on the coloured sports shoes trend for a while when JD Sports contacted me to see if I wanted to review a pair of trainers – I gave a firm ‘yes please’ to that question…!

The colour combination that I liked the most were these orange and blue New Balance 574 trainers – however, they are officially men’s shoes but as I have pretty big feet (UK 7), I’ve often shopped in the men’s section of sports shoes because I’m pretty sure there really isn’t any difference except for the sizes compared to the women’s sport shoes. It’s not so good if you have small feet – but then I guess you have the kid’s shoes to shop from, and they’re cheaper too, aren’t they?

Anyway! I’m really glad I went for this colour combination – the blue is gorgeously bright and of course they’re super comfortable. (One thing to note: if you’re buying New Balance trainers from the men’s section, go at least one full size up. I went for my normal size and they were really small.) I was pretty unsure at first how to style them… I’ve started with skinny jeans but I’m looking forward to trying different combinations, with may be more of a sports luxe vibe. In the meantime I went with my gingham shirt (thrifted and originally a man’s shirt) and my husband’s bow tie, just to add something a little different. So I am, in fact, wearing three actual pieces of menswear. Taking “masculine chic” to a whole new level, me.

Is there anything from your other half’s wardrobe that you borrow? Or do you buy trainers from either the kid’s section or the men’s section – and have you embraced the coloured sports shoe trend yet? Let me know in the comments!

    Dropping by from Citizen Rosebud!

Your trainers are colorful and stylish. You look adorable with the bow-tie Catherine! And YAY for thrifting!

I must say I haven't joined in the colored sports shoes trend yet. I used to join some fun runs before and my rubber shoes were for function rather than style. I also have not borrowed anything from the hubby, he's so minimalist and just has a simple wardrobe that I will probably feel bad if I snatch his favorite shirt for the weekend 🙂

I also run, Karen – I have loads of proper running shoes so it's nice to have a cool pair just for every day wear and not running! Thanks hun x

The trainers are cool, yeah, whatever. What I am LOVING about your ensemble is the rad gingham blouse and the bowtie! You have such a great fun style- and this casual outfit is among my faves.

Dearest Catherine…I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the trainer. At all. In fact, "running shoes" (as we call them) might be a big part of the reason why I don't like working out!! 😉 That being said, I DO think this is a really cute look…your borrowed shirt and bow tie are so cheerful and fun!!

I'm too small to borrow from my other half (not helped by the fact that he's over 6'). When I was very young and slim, I occasionally bought from the children's section. My only recent purchase was a children's dressing gown in winter 2012! I bought some bright pink running shoes recently that I wore for a trip to our local city as I knew I would be doing a lot of walking. I thought they looked very good with my bright pink top!

Oooh this is so interesting! I love this mix! The bow tie is so cute, looks astonishingly well with those sneakers, very neat ensemble! ^_^
I've been searching for nice sporty white sneakers for years. Can't find that perfect pair!

Hmm I'm with you on the white sneakers, Keit. The perfect pair are pretty elusive ;))

Aw, the gingham shirt and the little bow are so cute! I have to admit to having several men's shirts in my wardrobe now, that orginally started off in my other half's. I also borrow hats, jackets etc. but fortunately the OH doesn't borrow too much out of mine 😉 ha! x

You know, I just wanted to tell you. I am very happy I found your blog. I don't even remember how now but, it doesn't matter. I have been going through a "mid-life transition" at soon-to-be 47 yrs of age. I refuse to label it a mid-life crisis. And it is so comforting to see another redhead who handles herself with confidence and has a great sense of style! It's helped encourage me and I just wanted to say thank you.

    • 17 May 2014 / 7:33 pm

Oh Susie that's SO nice of you to say – thank you so much!! I love the fact that you describe it as a transition, not a crisis… it's only subjective, after all! Hope to see you again soon x

I bet you'd rock a bow tie, Patti – I'd love to see you try one! Thanks hun x

Great look, I have been known to borrow Kents jeans while gardening and I often buy my sneakers from the kids section, way cheaper.

Oh if only I had feet small enough, Linda!! x
