Starting a New Trend | Matching Shirt & Tie For Girls

Patterned blazer with shirt & tie
After writing three posts at the end of last year featuring three Autumn/Winter 2013 trends (tartan, checked coats and blush pink), I wondered why a particular trend-that’s-not-yet-trending hasn’t taken off with the fashion world. Since seeing Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) wearing a Marissa Webb Kyle Delancey Shirt on ABC/Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I was desperate to recreate her matching shirt/tie combo. I used to wear shirts with men’s ties (not matching) quite a lot a few years ago, and was waiting for someone to pick up on the Marvel character’s wardrobe choices. As no-one that I saw did, I had a thought that maybe I could start my own trend – and if I end up being the only one wearing matching shirts and ties, who cares…?

I actually wore this out to dinner with friends a couple of weeks ago and have only just got round to posting it – too many Christmassy outfits got in the way! I’ve had the shirt for years, but the tie is new: a pale yellow slim tie from Asos that was a perfect match. I’m now going through my husband’s tie collection to see what matches my shirts and blouses… I think he might temporarily “lose” some of them 😉

What do you think – is this something you’ve seen on anyone else recently? Or have you done the Annie Hall look (or something similar) yourself? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks Marie – I don't know if you saw in the outfit details but I use a hair donut – only way I can get it to be so big!!

I love the shirt/tie combo and the print of your blazer!

Looks good! Good idea too: start a trend.
The only time I saw this was with a man: black shirt with black tie (a colleague who is into fashion, even though being very macho). Whenever I try to wear a tie, my husband doesn't like it. And shirts buttoned up to my neck are not flattering for me. Why not, I don't know.

Funny isn't it Greetje, when we know something just isn't right on us, but we don't know why… I have a theory that colour consultations and wearing clothes for your body shape are all well and good, but I reckon personality and your face type has a HUGE amount to do with what suits us. Something I can't put my finger on just yet, but I feel a Musings post coming on!

Only example I can think of at the moment: when someone is into retro clothes – the 1940s for example – they often have a 1940s face, like a movie star from that decade, so they suit the look. Someone with the same colouring and body shape just wouldn't suit the look because their personality and face type just isn't right.

Rambling now, must think more on this!! C x

I think you might be on to something. Like Suzanne Carillo has the perfect face and body to pull off this 1940 look. So do think more.

Another gorgeous look, as usual;-). Really, your pics and looks are always of high quality. A feast for the eye!

About ties: I have a modest collection of men's ties myself. In my twenties and thirties I used to wear them regularly. Since then, not so much. The last time was about 9 years ago. But I never wore a same-color-tie. Love the idea though;-).

Hope your new trend 'picks up'. I will not be joining it in the near future, since Singapore is a bit too hot for a tie, as far as I'm concerned;-).

Gosh yes – much too humid for a shirt & tie!! And thank you for your sweet comments, Anja!

Love the jacket and the shirt and tie, great outfit. I like looks that mix masculine and fem details….sexy and cool. Adventurous!

Have many of my Grandpa's ties and wear them proudly. None match any of my shirts, though, and I doubt it would be possible (lots of paisleys and hidden animals in his collection

Yep that may be a bit tricky, Kerri ;))

I have always always hated the matching tie & shirt thing, but have to say it does look rather stunning as female wear – Hope the trend catches on – I have to say though, that is a humdinger of a jacket – its soooo nice.

Hmm I'm now wondering what other menswear trends would work on us girls…! Thanks Fashmr

Catherine, I haven't seen this trend around here yet, but I LOVE. IT. Thanks for starting it . . . It's feminine women power with such a flair of chic to it. I have worn men's skinny ties with shirts of different patterns and colors several times but not the matching. I'm on the hunt right now. Thanks again for a new inspiration.

I like it – very sassy, and no-one will ever mistake you for a man! Gorgeous blazer, too. xox

    • 19 January 2014 / 4:37 pm

Thanks Patti – sassy is a brilliant word!!!

I wear button-ups/shirts sooo rarely…this would be a tricky trend for me to follow!! But that doesn't mean that I can't admire the look as worn by others!! Very sharp, dear Catherine; and you're giving your fabulous "watercolour" blazer a chance to come out and play again, too!! But for me, it's definitely the shoes that steal the show with this outfit!! 🙂

  12. 15 January 2014 / 5:54 pm

I think that would be an awsome trend to follow. Maybe I will try something like this.:) Thanks for the idea. Blazer is just perfect.

    Fabulous 30s

Thanks Ana… I think the matchy matchy bit is what makes it modern…!
