How To Stay Stylish In Cold Weather | A Check Midi Skirt

Autumn outfit: Blue sweater, check midi skirt

I have to admit that staying stylish in very cold weather is a challenge – and not one I’m always up for.

I’d be happy to stay bundled up indoors under ten layers, slippers and a thick blanket, though it’s not always practical when you’ve got things to do and places to go…!

This is my outdoor version of my indoors “under a blanket” outfit – whoever’s idea it was to make a warm midi skirt out of blanket material was a genius. I bought this fleecy Asos skirt last year, and it has to be really cold to wear it as it keeps you so warm; luckily it’s been cold enough to need it, but that’s a contradiction as cold weather and I aren’t on the best of terms. With some major layering going on under that cobalt sweater (another sweater, a t-shirt and a long sleeved t-shirt) and the world’s longest scarf on top, I’m bundled up for the cold as stylishly as I can be. I know all the layers add bulk, but vanity goes right out the window with me in winter – I. Must. Be. Warm.

Do you feel the cold as much as I do? What’s your number one warm clothing item to fight the freeze whilst staying stylish – let me know in the comments!

OMG I love that style of skirt. Especially in Fall colors!.. My comfy little addition under a winter skirt is a pure chiffon (no netting) prairie type petticoat under it. I can wear a 17 yard petticoat of this type without it making its presence known. There isn't enough bilk to make my skirt billow out, but adds so much warmth that I dont need tights or leggings. Tall boots and warm socks make a very classy looking outfit.

I adore that scarf and the way you mixed patterns! So pretty!

I usually love pencil skirts but we already have snow here in the mountains and I cannot imagine going to the office in a pencil skirt now!
Looking at your fabulous midi skirt makes me want one too! Now…!

Beautiful colour contrast. I guess I can't think of any except for a down jacket. For someone who has warm weather all year round, I guess down jacket is a must to pack when I travel to colder places =D
I don't think they look that pretty but it sure kept me very warm in a cold weather.

Wow I can't imagine warm weather all year round Yen… I love the sound of being warm all the time but I bet I'd miss wearing coats! Thanks for coming by my lovely xo

I really love your hair with the little clips, and the skirt looks fab, lovely colours. Never gets quite cold enough here in Auckland, but if I was over there I would definitely try this look. A favourite of mine is the jersey knit dress, long or short.

Thank you Jenni – and I'm surprised, I'd envisioned Auckland being really snowy and cold in winter…! x

I nearly missed this wonderful skirt, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
    Happy Sunday, dear Catherine.

Oh yes, I really feel the cold. You can't beat lots of layers, and who cares about bulk so long as you're warm. Love that skirt.

Luckily your thin frame can handle all the layering. I think you did a terrific job. Adding the scarf (would never have thought of that) makes the look even more interesting. At the moment I am trying to make combinations with green and burgundy skinnies, thinking it would be easy, but having a hard time. The top bit has to be covering my bum which makes it less easy. And I keep thinking of you. I could really use your skills.

Haha the scarf was purely for warmth first, then style second Greetje!! I never find my hair is enough to keep my neck warm :))
Thanks my lovely as always x

I even wear boat necks a lot which leaves the top of ypur back bare….. I am hardened. LOL

Stylish and very warm-looking, C! I love a plaid midi like this. xo

I agree that you successfully achieved stylishness while staying warm…so cute, and no coat in sight!! Our weather here in Vancouver has become decidedly chillier lately, so I am already worried that I may not have enough outerwear options to see me through the winter; you, my dear, have become my "smart layering" inspiration!! XO

I once wore my thermal underwear and socks under my footed pajamas with pants and a sweater over that, then topped it all off with a huge coat, gloves, scarf, and hat. I looked like the Michelin Man, but I could lay in the snow and not even feel the cold! Obviously, I wasn't out and about in public. :o) You still look stylish and have your human form while keeping warm! My pop-pom hat off to you for that! :o)

Now THAT sounds toasty warm – and if I were cold enough I'd go out like that and wouldn't care. I don't think I'd have a personal style blog if I lived in an Alaskan-style climate ;)) Thanks sweetie!

I recently purchased the new structured leggings from Spanx…they are pricey, but worth it! They are super thick cotton that hold you in like compression workout pants, but they are thin enough to layer. I have been wearing mine under sweater dresses with boots and then layering cardigans, jackets, etc on top as needed…we're just having our first real cold spell here in Dallas/Fort Worth. Stay warm! : )

Thank you Jennifer – and for the tip!! Think I might check them out…!

  14. 22 November 2013 / 5:52 pm

Love the colours in the skirt! I am loving sweater dresses with opaque tights, ankle boots and a statement necklace or a bright scarf to keep warm and cosy, yet stylish!

Love the outfit! I'm always looking for a good midi skirt. That length tends to look better on on me but cute ones are hard to find. My tip for staying warm AND stylish is fleece lined tights! (don't know if you call them tights in the UK?) Anytime I'm wearing a dress or skirt in the winter it is a must to layer it with fleece lined tights! They are so soft and keep your legs toasty.

    • 26 November 2013 / 11:29 pm

OMG love the sound of fleece lined tights!! My other way to layer for warmth is ribbed tights under leggings, toasty. And yes we call them tights – though strangely when I was younger we were told Americans (if that's where you're from) call them pantyhose?!! Haha I loved that word…!

To true. If we aren't careful we can look ten times heavier, or is that just me? lol

Your outfit looks great and I love the colour combinations on it. You have reminded me to bull out my blanket midi skirt, always a warm favourite in the chiller weather.

Ahhh you have one too – they're sooo great, aren't they? Thanks hun x

I agree, it's difficult to be stylish in this cold weather. it's far too easy to put a jumper over a vest top and a tshirt, then throw a coat on! If it was for blogging, i'd be slobbin' it right now. You look FABULOUS here, Catherine! I wish I could rock a midi, i'm always looking at them on topshop (with the mouse hovering over the 'add to basket' button!). I am too short to pull it off though 🙁 xxx

Aww thanks Sarah… why not try one anyway? The beauty of online shopping means to get to try stuff in your own home – and take a photo to see what they REALLY look like (but I know you know that :)) xo
