Camo & Plaid Pattern Mix Autumnal Outfit #iwillwearwhatilike

Super casual autumnal pattern mix: Camo jacket check plaid shirt cream peg pants trousers white Adidas Stan Smiths | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

I’m back from my week’s holiday in Cornwall, and for today’s #iwillwearwhatilike post I thought I’d show you my super casual, camo and plaid pattern mix outfit that became my “uniform” of sorts during our week away.

For any of you that aren’t familiar with the British weather, it can be changeable (and erratic, and unpredictable)… at best. This time last year the UK was basking in the hottest September temperatures since records began (something like 34°C I think). THIS year… not so much! However, Cornwall is ALWAYS beautiful, even in the wind and rain. But there was a lot of sunshine between the showers and we did absolutely nothing, to some extent, so it was perfect in terms of a break for all three of us.

We of course took Riley with us, and despite being an old boy he loved climbing the cliff tops and walking on the beach (we rented a ground floor apartment right on the beach at St Agnes and it was lovely). We’ve been to Cornwall twice before in the last five years so we’ve done a lot of the sightseeing, so all we did this time was walk the dog, have pub lunches and relax on the sofa reading and napping.

I set my Inbox to Out of Office (and not back till the 18th), and apart from one post that was inspired by an iffy comment I received in the week I didn’t do any serious blogging, just a little Instagramming here and there.

And that, dear readers, is what you call pure bliss.

I’m back at home now lamenting the end of summer as I sit here wondering where my fingerless gloves and sheepskin boots are. I thoroughly recommend a total shutdown from work with a week away at least once a year if you can. Holidays – especially ones where you pack in lots of sightseeing and excursions – can be pretty tiring. But a week of effectively doing nothing was just wonderful.

Anyway, onto the outfit – super casual, and hopefully something to inspire the pattern mix-lovers among you…!

SHOP THE LOOK:

This camo jacket stood me in good stead over the course of the week – I took this one and a full-on raincoat (which I’ll feature later this month). This jacket was good for the drier days, and I’ve had it a few years but tend to forget I have it (this one is similar). As most of the clothes I took were casual for dog walking and lounging about, a classic red and blue check shirt was a good choice.

Put checks with camo and you’ve got yourself a powerful pattern mix. It may be a little too much for some, but hey – I’m all over too much, even when doing casual. The other key pieces were the ever-stylish (and comfy) white Stan Smiths, the embroidered bandana (love this one from Asos) and the still-in-love-with-it leather backpack that was gifted to me by Beara Beara. That bag did some serious mileage on our holiday… everything was kept super safe in there!

I think it’s safe to say all my outfits are going to be autumnal from now on till the end of the year – summer is O.V.E.R. in the UK. Next weekend I’ll put away all my unworn summer clothes for yet another year… boo!

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

What a fun mix of patterns! It screams fall, yet is still unexpected! I hope your week is off to a great start!

Wow, what a brilliant bit of pattern play Catherine! I've never mixed these together, but you can bet I'm going to give it a whirl soon. You're so right about Cornwall, it's still lovely come rain or shine, which is just as well as this summer we're had more rain than sun that's for sure. Sounds like you loved your week of chillin'. Thanks for the link up x

Love your super casual look. Print mixing is always fun and your camo really can go with just about anything! I love get aways that are relaxing like yours was. Life is so busy, so I feel like it is nice to absolutely nothing, when on a vaca other than take walks, eat and do some reading. Glad you had a good rest. – Amy

Oh I'm glad Sabina!! It was all so windy on my stories 😀

  7. 20 September 2017 / 3:24 am

I too am in love with the backpack. It appears to be thick leather and beautifully made. This looks like a lifetime piece!
You've stretched the print mixing to the edge of my comfort zone but you look cute and ready for fun in these two rugged prints. Fondly, Jude

That backpack is such a stunner, and big enough to fit all the essentials in too. I love your jacket, I don't have anything in camo print yet…one to add to the list!

I've just had a week off but we didn't go anywhere because my 22-year-old nephew came to stay (it was his very first trip abroad) so we just chilled out by the pool and had lots of dinners out! But we are planning a proper holiday at the end of the year – I can't wait!
I LOVE camo and I do like plaid but I'd never have thought to put them together. I'm surprised how much I like it lol. That jacket is to die for – I'm always drawn to camo in shops and that would definitely pull me in!

So I've got you thinking about camo and plaid, eh Suzy…?! 😉 thank you hon – and yes your relaxing break by the pool sounds wonnnnnderful…

  10. 19 September 2017 / 1:12 pm

Oh camo, how do I love thee! You pulled the plaid and camo together fabulously! As always, thank you for hosting.

  11. 19 September 2017 / 12:37 pm

I love that back pack bag!

  12. 19 September 2017 / 6:45 am

Robin and I also did a whole lot of nothing during our week of stay-cation, dearest Catherine…and we didn't regret it one bit!! 😀 Your relaxed look here is the perfect example of how it's possible to be both comfy AND chic when dressing for a holiday. I love the fearlessness of this plaid shirt and camo jacket combination; and your leather backpack?? It has me swooning every time you wear it!! XOXO

Thank you Monika! And yes, isn't a proper break the best thing thing ever? We should all do it at last once a year, our lives are often too hectic and we fill holiday time with doing too much!! x

  13. 19 September 2017 / 6:44 am

Yup, summer is over indeed! I'm a bit sad about it but at least there's tweed to look forward to! Sounds like your break was lovely, sometimes a total chill is much needed x

  14. 19 September 2017 / 12:22 am

    Hello Catherine,

I took a (BIG) blogging break this summer, and it felt so good. I'm left with a renewed energy to post again on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. My creative juices are flowing again. I'm inspired and ready to go. The break was much needed. We must do this for ourselves.

I so enjoyed watching your trip from afar. It was fun to see you on holiday. Your pooch (American slang for a cute dog) is so adorable. (I'm sorry if that word means something else in British English!) This outfit looks like the perfect amount of layers. When I travel to the Pacific Northwest I do the same–layer after layer after layer because you never know–especially when on the coast.

Dear Catherine, thank you for choosing to highlight my bold bright jumpsuit! It's a good one. Feels properly funky!! I linked my three posts from last week again this week. If by chance the Style Stories doesn't fit into this category–no problem. It is what I wore just style differently by a series of flat lays. I'm always trying something new….

Thank you again. Welcome back. And let's go!!

Love, Annie from Kremb de la Kremb

    • 28 September 2017 / 9:26 am

Annie that's so great to hear you're inspired again!! Glad to hear you enjoyed a break too.

And yes, we say pooch! In fact poor Riley is so slow walking we often say we're going to take him on a "pooch mooch" rather than a walk ;)) haha

  15. 19 September 2017 / 12:07 am

Looking rather good in your casual vibe. Getaways , even for a few days , so good to recharge the batteries. Thank you for hosting.

  16. 18 September 2017 / 11:50 pm

I hope you had a wonderful holiday! I always adore your more casual outfits and I'm a big fan of the camo trend lately. Looking fantastic!

That backpack is gorgeous!!!!! Love the jacket! I may have linked a few extra links because I have quite a few featuring camo—-as an overlooked classic print lolololol!!! Love it 😀

  18. 18 September 2017 / 6:27 pm

We were in the UK last week, West Sussex, and we had the greatest weather. Sunshine, blue skies, perfect!

    • 28 September 2017 / 9:23 am

Oh gosh lucky you, Nancy – we didn't get that at all! Well we had one really nice sunny day, but the wind took over the rest of the week… We still enjoyed it though 🙂

  19. 18 September 2017 / 5:55 pm

I am so not a backpack person. However, that backpack. I heard it call my name. Seriously. I'm listening and it's still calling me. I need it. And it's that great cordovan color. Be still my heart.

Here in the Northeast of the USA–Philadelphia to be exact, the weather sucks. Summer wasn't that hot. Thankfully, we were in the South of France for three weeks so I was able to actually enjoy summer weather.

September, so far has been hotter than August and muggy and the weather today is awful. Muggy, cloudy and it should just rain and get it over with.

    That backpack though…..

Haha I guess you like the backpack, Catherine…?!! It's a beauty – the leather is as hard as it can be, it is SO solid. Treat yourself!!!!!!! x

  20. 18 September 2017 / 5:16 pm

Love this look! I am a big camo fan and am currently looking for a great pair of pants in the print. I so need to take some tine to relax. I mostly stayed off everything for the weekend. But the way I am feeling this morning makes me think it wasn't enough. I am seriously thinking that I'll shut down on Saturdays and Sundays from now on. Happy Monday!
    Peace!

I love that bag, Catherine. It's definitely a favourite. Nothing like a do-nothing getaway, especially with our beloved animal friends. Thanks for the linkup!

Our weather is very similar, C! So far not a mild and sunny early autumn but grey, rainy and cold instead. I almost had to give up pumps and wear booties… but I resisted 😉
I hope one day I'll go to Cornwall too!

Brilliant pairing of camo and plaid. It's a fun and vibrant look. Time away is a necessity at times and I should have planned one better for myself during my recent post-surgery convalescence. Thanks for sharing your experience and for hosting.

I know my husband would love it if I'd get away for a holiday and not worry about home or blogging life. I will have to try it soon, because it's needed for good mental health!!
I can't believe how much I love the camo print lately!! It seems to work with everything!
