One More Mixed Stripes and Florals Summer Outfit #iwillwearwhatilike

Summer style mixed stripes and florals: Blue floral pyjama-style top orange stripe Breton top wide leg denim trousers orange lace-up ghillie shoes orange-tinted aviators yellow ochre hobo bag | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

Seeing as the summer just hasn’t really happened in the UK this month, I thought I should squeeze a few classic summer combinations out of what’s left of this season. I’m writing this wearing about four layers, including a thick sweater and scarf… It’s not funny anymore!

The combo I went with during one of our (numerous) cold August days was the classic stripes and florals – is there a better pattern mix than those two for summer? It may not be sunny or warm here but at least these two scream summer style.

I’d not worn the floral pyjama-style jacket for ages, in fact I’d almost forgotten I had it. It’s a lovely silky fabric (similar to this one) and was delighted to discover it went beautifully with my orange stripe Breton top – I’m a bit ashamed to say my favourite colour orange is popping up just about everywhere in this outfit.

We’ve got orange stripes, orange sunglasses, orange flowers in the jacket and orange lace up ghillie shoes. For someone who couldn’t stand the colour a few years ago, I’ve gone the other way and surrounded myself with all things tango-hued…!

On a different note: I was thinking the other day about when the last time I wore skinny jeans was (not counting wearing them on a photo shot) – meaning of my own accord, just generally at home or anywhere. And I simply couldn’t remember. I favour flared, tapered and wide leg trousers so much more these days, especially as skinny really are so uncomfortable (and even more especially when you can’t fit into yours anymore). These ones from JD Williams are almost identical to the ones I’m wearing, which brings me onto…

SHOP THE LOOK:

… the fact that I’m going to be shooting a video with other bloggers and influencers for JD Williams tomorrow in Manchester – it’s another collaboration I’m working on with them. Make sure you follow them on Instagram as I’ll be taking over their Stories for the day on Tuesday… I think it will be a whole lot of fun: Behind the scenes of the shoot, talking to the other influencers and all sorts!

And finally…

On Friday I talked about how I’m okay with missing the total eclipse and how we were supposed to be in the US for an east coast road trip organised around the main event (😭) – if you’re over there and watching it today, please let me know how it was, I’ll live it vicariously through you! I thought I could at least watch it live on TV, but would you believe it I’ll be on the train to Manchester this afternoon. The train’s Wifi and 3G was dire the whole way the last time I went up, so I doubt I’ll see it live.

This eclipse and I were not meant to be!!

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Love the stripes and florals combo! I also love your hair up, and the cognac shoes and bag, an excellent look! I am so sorry you did not have a good summer season..that is unfortunate! I did see the eclipse, and was enthralled by it, to my surprise!
    I enjoyed this post !

Fabulous. That's how you must feel walking around town in this outfit. 😉 I love how the red stripes make the red in the floral top, well, pop. Also love the shades. Thank you for hosting week to week! Love a place to land.

Stripes and floral print always looks fab! I love those lace up shoes. I haven't worn skinny jeans for a while but I probably will when the weather turns cooler (as if it isn't already!). I'm trying to hold on to the last bit of summer for as long as possible!

Florals and stripes…. a classic in my book!
I'm in striped trousers and a floral top today and loving it (cosy cardigan too)
As for orange…..it's hard to resist.

Summer never really happened in Scotland.
All of the stories I heard about people melting in ridiculous heat seemed so far away from my (thermal clad) world.
I've just placed an order for my annual winter thermals as stocks are running low! LOL (funny but NOT really funny)

I saw the eclipse in Cornwall when my (now 19 year old) son was a baby on my back.
We climbed up a hill to get away from the crowds and sat alone in a field with horses on one side and sheep on the other.
The stillness and silence was the most amazing part of the experience.
I am convinced that if we had stuck with the crowds that special link I felt with nature and the universe would have been lost.
It sounds SO corny but it was true.
      A magical moment for sure.
At the moment the sun was covered and the air went cool the birds went crazy and the horses started to whinny and run around their field.
      It was so spooky.
If you ever get a chance to chase another eclipse I recommend moving away from the masses and experiencing it with someone you love.

You have captured me with those shoes and bag especially. I understand your weakness for orange. It is an almighty colour. Too bad about the missing summer month. Here has been cooler than normal but I like it – which surprises me. Thanks for the linkup.

Catherine, you're a master of mixing prints! I need to do better at it. Thanks for the inspiration!

I've recently renewed my love of skinny jeans, dearest Catherine…but who am I kidding?? I'm gaga over pretty much EVERY denim style…your wide-leg trousers included!! So sorry that the UK's summer has been a dud as far as the weather goes (I'm not going to be a mean girl and brag about ours!) but your cute orange-on-orange outfit definitely makes up for those cool temperatures with its spicy colour combo!! P.S. I DID get to step out of the office for a few minutes to watch the solar eclipse live…and if what I saw was any indication, you really didn't miss much!! I guess I was expecting the "Hollywood" version!! XOXO

I love your jacket. The eclipse wasn't much to see where I live in. I didn't have glasses so I couldn't look directly at it. The sky looked a little different, and there were some unusual shadows, but nothing extraordinary…I've seen more interesting light/sky scenes with summer storms.

  11. 21 August 2017 / 7:47 pm

What a shame that summer isn't giving warm temperatures. We are back in the (weather) saddle over here. Hope it will come to the UK too.
I have joined I will wear what I want and link back to it next week. OK? I already have had a lot of readers yesterday and today.

What a fabulous way to wear summer when the skies won't deliver it! You're a genius at colour and pattern mixing! X

Although I do love my skinnies, there's no way I can squeeze my butt into them at the moment. It had made me try other stylers though, so there's that. Always a silver lining! You look awesome, as always and I'm looking forward to watching those stories!

What a fabulous project since you couldn't be out experiencing the eclipse!!!
And you're such a fabulous print mixer, Catherine. I can totally say that because of you, I've gotten more comfortable doing it—thanks!!

I still live in skinnies in the cooler weather. I find them super comfy – probably because I tend to go for ones with a little stretch in them. Having said that, I do love wearing looser fits too. I just love jeans, full stop lol!
I'm loving this outfit – the colours, the prints together, your hair up! Gorgeous!

Keep the orange coming! I love cheery warm colours. Looking forward to seeing how you wear orange in Autumn – with khaki maybe? Let's hope September is sunny!! X

  20. 21 August 2017 / 2:39 pm

Still a fresh print mix for end of summer 🙂

  21. 21 August 2017 / 2:38 pm

Still into my skinnies, but being late to this particular party I suspect they'll be going strong for a while. And you've inspired me to wear my short floral kimono over a srtiped tee tomorrow…
    …with my skinnies!

  22. 21 August 2017 / 2:23 pm

You look great in bold orange. Your shoes are show stoppers!

  23. 21 August 2017 / 2:13 pm

Catherine I no longer wear skinnies unless all my other jeans are in the wash !!
Btw can't wait to catch up with you later! See you soon xxxxx
