4 Ways to Wear 4 Transitional Summer to Autumn Pieces

JD Williams SS17 outfits: Daytime casual (grey leather jacket, orange floral jumpsuit) and date night outfit (khaki shirt, gold metallic pleated maxi skirt) | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

As autumn is knocking on our door we start to get those days where it could still be hot but equally the temperatures may suddenly drop. Like it or not, tomorrow is September and it’s time to start thinking transitional wardrobes…!

Last month I wrote about what it’s like being a guest fashion editor for a fashion brand’s magazine – I featured images from the JD Williams photo shoot where I wore a glamping outfit, something suitable for a city break and an outfit for the guest editor’s letter page. As I knew the pieces would work so well going into next season I thought I’d restyle them to show you that four simple pieces can transition seamlessly from your summer wardrobe into your autumn wardrobe.

The pieces that JD Williams sent me are all so good – the grey leather jacket is buttery soft, as is the jumpsuit (LOVE that orange-red colour)!

In the first shoot (see below) I wore the pleated skirt with the biker jacket and the black mules, and the khaki shirt with the jumpsuit and orange sandals. I decided to concentrate on these two outfits and switch them up to look more autumnal as the glamping outfit was super casual – though there’s no reason why the shirts and jeans I wore can’t work in autumn as well (simply switch the espadrilles for knee high boots and add a roll neck underneath)!

Outfit one (above) is a great look for daytime – lunch, shopping, sightseeing, anything casual. A biker jacket in grey is so versatile… I have a classic black biker that I wear a lot but as a not-very-enthusiastic wearer of black it feels too heavy colour-wise for me in summer so I avoid wearing it.

A classic biker jacket in pale grey? Perfect. It’ll go with everything.

It actually picked out the grey in the florals of the jumpsuit (which is so soft to the touch by the way) and added a plain black t-shirt to add some balance to the black mules. When it gets much colder I’ll swap the mules for ankle boots (I LOVE cropped wide leg trousers with ankle boots!) and a roll neck. Although florals are traditionally a summer print and I tend to go for darker florals in autumn and winter, there’s something about this pretty print that says “I’m good for colder days too” to me. I think it’s the print: less English country garden, more Oriental flowers, so it somehow seems autumn-appropriate.

Anyway – onto outfit two…

This outfit surprised me – meaning, I was surprised at how well the khaki shirt and gold skirt complemented each other. Without realising it they’re of the same tone (shade? hue? I get all those mixed up) that work beautifully together… who’d have known? I also like the contrast of shiny metallic and soft cotton, and the embellished shoulders of the shirt are such a great detail. I think it’s a going to be a hardworking piece in my wardrobe this year (as I type I’m wearing it loose like a jacket, with jeans and a t-shirt) – khaki is a great alternative neutral to black and SO much more flattering.

WITHOUT REALISING IT THEY’RE OF THE SAME TONE (SHADE? HUE? I GET ALL THOSE MIXED UP) THAT WORK BEAUTIFULLY TOGETHER… WHO’D HAVE KNOWN?

As I styled these pieces as a date night outfit they deserved some pretty heels – orange will forever be my go-to colour (or at least until yellow or pink or lilac take over). These wedges are the perfect bright addition the outfit needed, and you may notice that I matched my lipstick to them… I don’t often go for a bold lip but when I do, I always choose the orangey-reds or corals. I’m all about the warm colours, which is why these pieces spoke to me…!

So there you have it: Four summery pieces that will work hard in your autumn wardrobe with just a few tweaks here and there.

I’m really proud to be working with JD Williams this year – some of you may have seen on my Instagram feed that I was working on another project with them last week. This is my magazine guest editor spot all wrapped up for now (it was so fun and such an honour to be asked!) – stay tuned for more on the brand and what they have in store for autumn… I’m actually really, really excited about it!

Fall seems made for anyone who craves richness of tone, more tactile and cozy warmth and a rosy cheek. You look beautiful in all of the above! I'm a new follower who can't get my name added to the thoughts I convey no matter how I might try! Fondly, Jude

Jude thank you for such a lovely comment! Unfortunately I love summer too much for autumn to be my favourite, but I know what you mean about loving all things tactile and cozy. xx

Thanks so much Nancy – I'm growing out my fringe so it's at the awkward inbetween stage RN… it's a pain but I'm so glad you liked it styled this way! x

The khaki is my personal favourite Catherine. I'm blown away by how elegant it is, I never would've thought to match these two pieces at all! You look absolutely stunning mate xx

I am just as surprised that the golden pleated skirt works so well with the kakhi shirt, but it does. It is a really great outfit. Proportions, colours, uniqueness etc. all there. And the orange shoes indeed top it off. Plus cute clutch. A stellar outfit. (MY personal taste too. You do realize that don't you haha)

Fabulous. I adore that skirt. I have a gold pleated skirt already but this is such a rich warm tone I'm wondering if I can justify another!!

Have to say am very pleasantly surprised by these JD Williams pieces you are sharing.

It's probably more of a bronze colour than gold, Rachel – maybe that's why it works with khaki so well! thank you sweetie x

Great looks. One is really astonished how many pieces work for more than one season when one gives it some thoughts

I love these autumnal looks Catherine.
    Such beautiful colours.
Bronzes and reds with your beautiful hair.
    Perfect.

Without wanting to sound like a smart arse… which I am about to!!! LOL
    Hues = Colours
Tints = Colours mixed with white
Tones = Colour mixed with grey
Shades = Colour mixed with black
And there are loads of combinations of them all!

Colour is so interesting and complicated… yet simple!
That's why I love any colourful look.

      That's pretty boring really!
