What to Wear to a Windy Beach in Cornwall in Summer #iwillwearwhatilike

I thought it was about time I went back to my warm colours as I’ve been wearing a lot of neutrals and cool colours lately. Time for red, orange and pinks again (it is summer, after all)!

We went to Perranporth beach in Cornwall on Saturday: There was beautiful sunshine in the morning, but by lunchtime it clouded over and got rather windy. Nothing unusual about that for a British beach in July, but considering it was 30°C+ the other week we’d kinda hoped for maybe a little bit of sun…?!

Anyway luckily it wasn’t too hot for Riley, he rather enjoyed splashing about in the water to keep cool and we didn’t have to desperately search for shade to stop him collapsing from exhaustion, so in that sense the cloud was a welcome break. However it made dressing for the weather difficult: What DO you wear to a windy beach in Cornwall?

Thankfully I think I got it just about right with my orange Breton-stripe top and floral trousers. It was most definitely NOT warm enough for anything sleeveless, and the cropped trousers were handy for splashing about in the shallow pools and streams on the beach. I’m surprised I hadn’t paired these two together before: I think I’d always thought of the trousers as having a pink floral print. Although I’m someone who’d normally pair orange and pink without a second thought, I guess I was thinking Shall I wear orange with pink today… Oh look, the roses on the trousers are actually orange now they’re with those orange stripes. Who knew?!

Maybe I’m better at this colour thing than I actually thought (or maybe I’m worse)…

I love the accessories I chose for this outfit, namely the tassel earrings. Mine are from Mango, who have an amazing selection of statement earrings (including their own version of the much-coveted red tassel earrings which have been so popular this summer).

SHOP THE LOOK:

I’m also still wearing the pearl-effect sunglasses. They are without a doubt my go-to sunnies for this summer – they just seem to make everything look fun and summery. And finally, the red espadrilles which, alas, were Asos SS16… BUT because I love you guys so much(!) I’ve scoured the interwebs and found a selection of red espadrilles (AND tassel earrings) for you to shop – scroll down to the last image and you’ll find them there.

There you have it: What Brits wear to the beach in July. If it’s sunny it’s a bonus, if it’s hot and sunny it’s just freaky. When we drove back home to Devon later that evening we went through hideously thick fog and rain… Don’t say the UK doesn’t get the weirdest weather, it’s all true…!

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Love the outfit Catherine! Do you think that, if it were warmer, a loose maxi dress is a good beach outfit, even if it’s windy?

Thanks Jordan – a maxi is always a good idea IMO, but it’s completely up to you as to how practical it is (if the dress blowing up all the time will annoy you then maybe not)! Don’t forget my ethos is #iwillwearwhatilike so the decision is yours and yours alone! xx

Such a cute outfit Catherine. Just perfect for a relaxed day at the beach. Over here summer is picking up speed but the North Sea will be my escape 🙂 Thank you for hosting and have a great week. xo Sabina

Once again we share similar weather woes, dearest Catherine!! Our days here in Vancouver have been quite hot and sunny (yay!) but it cools down so much every evening that I can't sit out on our lovely terrace without a wool sweater to keep me warm!! You've certainly got the going-to-the-beach-on-a-cool-day look down pat, though; stripes and florals are always a match made in heaven…and those ruby red espadrilles?? Just as chic "in hand" as they are on your feet!! XOXO

Love this entire outfit, but man I'm coveting those shoes and earrings!

Fabulous pattern mixing! I love those trousers, and your earrings are stunning! We drove up to Blackpool on Sunday as a birthday treat for Isobel and her friend. It was my first time there…not sure I'd hurry to go back. The sky was blue but the sea was a browny grey colour! Ah well, the kids loved it, especially the water park, but give me the Caribbean any day!

Oh Catherine, Love this so much, what a pretty mix of patterns and the red striped shirt is such a classic. Cornwall is probably my favourite area ever and I can't wait to go back in September. Have an amazing day. Love, Kirsten xx

Fabulous, happy colour and pattern mixing, perfect for Perranporth. We were on that very beach at May half term. But in a wetsuit in the wind. Not my finest style moment – but an example of sartorial risk-taking nonetheless!!

I'm loving your stripes and flowers combo Catherine – I've not mixed these together myself yet so must give it a try as yours works so well. Cornish beaches are surely best aren't they? Thanks for the link up party!

It is nice to see you back in oranges again; that's how I like my Catherine the best! Oranges and pinks… and this outfit has both! I'm also digging your print clash, and OMG how yummy are those espadrilles? The photos are so beautiful… Cornwall seems like a place where all the faeries and nymphs must live. I'd find a nice cliffside rock ledge if I were a faerie… xx

Gorgeous mixing of prints and warm shades. I love your accessories too, especially your espadrilles! Beautiful photos- I love Cornwall. Thank you for hosting the link-up lovely lady xxxx

I like these pieces together, but my favourite thing is how you carry your espadrilles and how their ties blow in the wind. I love seeing the effects of a breeze. And the location is stunning. Thanks for the linkup.

Thank you for featuring me Catherine. Made my day! xx
I've had problems with windy weather, especially taking photos. Is it me or is it windier this year? Jeans and a T to knock about the beach in has to be a good idea.Sounds like Riley is having fun xx

Such a lovely pattern mix, great with your hair. Our local beach is just down the road so I wait for the sun to shine then skidaddle, leaving my attempt at style on the front door step. So, it's usually any old jersey dress slung over my swimsuit, or bathers as we call them here. Footwear doesn't get any fancier than Birkies but most often it's my gardening crockies, just right for rock-pooling but totally out of place on a style blog!

    • 3 July 2017 / 3:01 pm

YES to throwing caution to the wind where fashion is concerned on the beach… You're so lucky to have the beach on your doorstep!! Thanks sweetie x

  21. 3 July 2017 / 2:41 pm

Like Rachel, I find typical Welsh summer beach visits do necessitate a jacket and layers! However, I got caught out once – my now husband and I had been at some event the night before and it had been chilly and torrential rain. We went and sat on the beach the next morning in leather jackets and boots and then suddenly the sun came out and it was blazing hot. We hadn't brought any other clothes and melted a bit. Now I pack for all eventualities… Love those sunglasses, no wonder you're wearing them so much! x

    • 3 July 2017 / 2:58 pm

That's the trouble with this time of year Porcelina – it's so bloody unpredictable!! We become layering experts ;)) x

  22. 3 July 2017 / 2:27 pm

Lovely beach outfit catherine! So so pretty and practical too. I like to go with a breton, a khaki utility jacket and some cropped jeans if its typical welsh weather, but if its a heatwave i always ditch fashion when it comes to a proper fun beach day and i don my board shorts a bikini top and vest and roxy flipflips.. i look like a 13 year old boy mostly, but im totally ok with that as i love messing about in the sun on the beach just like i did when i was a kid and sometimes its just nice to not worry about fasshhhunnn! haha!
Thanks for hosting lovely lady xxx

    • 3 July 2017 / 2:57 pm

It's crazy isn't it Rachel that we wear jeans to the beach in the UK in summer…?!! If it ever gets to true "bikini weather" it's usually freaky!! 😉 thank you hon x

  23. 3 July 2017 / 2:16 pm

It's smart to think about where you are going when you're getting dressed!! I forget that the beach gets windy and colder since we don't have one in Colorado. But we were just in LA, and I got the lesson, ha ha!!

I remember it being VERY windy on the beach in San Francisco in July, Jodie… but I think a lot of that had to do with San Fran's notoriety for fog and wind!! x

    • 3 July 2017 / 3:22 pm

In Southern CA, we have "June Gloom" which started mid-May this year and will probably linger through July. And Jodie, wouldn't you know it, it turned into a beautiful sunny day well beyond sunset yesterday. One day off, Mother Nature!
