How to Add Interest to an Outfit With Pattern and Texture #iwillwearwhatilike

Bold, colourful summer dressing: White lace top pyjama-style patterned trousers pants white Stan Smiths statement tassel earrings orange aviators pink suede backpack | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style blog

Last week I showed you what I wore to the Olympic Park to watch the World Para Athletics Championships at the Olympic Park and Stadium, this week I’m showing you the second outfit I wore on day two of our London trip. I needed something comfortable as well as bold and breezy…!

I also must say thank you SO much for all the lovely birthday wishes after publishing my birthday and blogiversary post yesterday – in the end, we didn’t go out and celebrate as such. My parents are moving house this week and we realised getting their house and garden packed was far more important (there was more to do still than we originally thought). But it’s okay, we’ll celebrate my birthday with our dog-friendly pub lunch either this weekend or sometime very soon.

As I’m such a fan of birthdays I’m happy to extend the celebrations – it was still nice spending it with my family, despite me looking like a hot, dirty mess all day (sorting and packing a large house that’s been lived in for nearly 25 years is HARD work)…!

The outfit: Some of you may recognise the pattern of the trousers – they’re the matching pair to the pyjama-style top I last wore under my long check jacket in May when it was still somewhat chilly. I’d always wanted the whole co-ords set but the trousers had long since sold out when I bought the top last year. It seemed a pair miraculously turned up in my size AND on sale… What are the chances?!

However, they’re now sold out again but I’ve linked to some great alternatives below.

SHOP THE LOOK:

Wide leg pants, palazzo pants, pyjama (style) bottoms – whatever you call them they’re still very much on trend and I’m a huge fan. They are so nice and loose and easy to wear, and the perfect shoe (in my eyes) to wear with them is your classic white Stan Smiths. Comfort clothes don’t get any comfier than this.

It was a very warm day at the park, not over sunny but bright and humid. So I wore a cotton vest top under my white lace top (last seen here), and that was me done for the day. I like mixing textures as well as patterns in my outfits – the pink backpack is (faux) suede so that added one more texture to the mix, plus you’ve got this year’s most popular jewellery trend: the statement earring. Not only that, but tassel earrings from Mango… I may be a bit late to the tassel earrings party but I do love them.

(Mango have the BEST statement earrings in my opinion.)

I bought three pairs of huge earrings from them the other month, and I love them all. I’m glad that I’m growing out the bob because it’s getting long enough to put my hair up again, and who wants to hide fabulous earrings with a bob you can’t put up…?

The #iwillwearwhatilike link up with Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

I love those trousers, the pattern is fab! I don't have any tassel earrings yet but they're top of my shopping list so I'll check Mango out. Happy belated birthday 🙂

I always love seeing how people are mixing patterns and textures, so I think it's time I try it myself! Thank you for a dose of inspiration!

I DID recognize the pattern of your cool palazzo pants, dear Catherine…but I couldn't remember if it was those trousers I'd seen before, or a matching piece that you'd previously modelled!! It was obviously meant to be that you have both pieces in the set; how else to explain that the bottoms found their way to you a year after you'd already purchased the top?! 😉 And I love, love, LOVE all the touches of pink in this look!! My pink hair has faded a fair bit since it was first done, but I'm getting a refresh this Friday…just in time for a wedding and the new pink slip dress that I bought especially for the occasion!! XOXO

Wow that's a big move for your parents after so many years – wishing them every happiness in their new abode.

I need no convincing about pyjama style bottoms – though my shoe of choice would be a loafer rather than trainers (I have some gold ones but really want some velvet ones!). Looks like you had a lovely time at the Olympic park. xx

It's the perfect time of year to be wearing these loose fun pants. I have mine out and am wearing them a lot as our temperatures are finally rising. Lovely look! Peace!

You're so right about Mango and earrings lately; they really have become better, although the store closest to me is TINY and TERRIBLE! I never think of them for that reason.

That lace top is fab and I'm still in love with those orange aviators! Thank you for all of your link up work, lovely xxx

I am drawn to that pattern! I wish I would find a skirt or dress with a pattern like that!

  13. 24 July 2017 / 6:09 pm

I'm a big pattern and texture fan in clothes. Plain isn't really my thing haha

  14. 24 July 2017 / 5:36 pm

I'm generally a texture person and pattern secondary. I think I'd tend my pattern to be in the texture. Your look is very fresh. Love it on you. I haven't yet reached tassel party myself.

You look so cool and colourful in this outfit. I especially like the bold trim on the lace top for some style contrast. And the bag – love it. Thanks for the linkup!

Cute! Moving house is such a big deal! So much to do

  17. 24 July 2017 / 2:24 pm

Good luck with the move, Catherine. Makes me think of my mum's move from the farm house where I grew up to her little bungalow a few years ago. She chose everything that she wanted that would fit into the little house…. and I was in charge of sorting through everything else in the farmhouse. What a job. So many memories. Best of all was unpacking the huge cedar chest with piles of clothes saved over the years, from the fifties, sixties, seventies… and dressing my great-niece and nephew up in vintage outfits. But the decisions of what to donate, what to toss, and what really had to have a new home in the family were sometimes wrenching.
BTW…really like those wide-leg pants with sneakers.

  18. 24 July 2017 / 2:11 pm

I love palazzo pants and tassel earrings but I haven't found a pair I love enough to buy just yet. The trouble is my favourite jewellery shop closed down a few months ago… bummer!
You look fabulous as always Catherine 🙂

I do think the statement earrings are perfect for many of the fun shirts I see nowadays!! As much as I love my accessories—sometimes the shirt needs to be the focal point!!
