Underwear as Outerwear: Styling a Lace Trim Camisole, Over 40 #iwillwearwhatilike

Smart chic look with a blazer and camisole black blazer black and white camisole top burgundy kick flare trousers black block heels | Not Dressed As Lamb, over 40 style

So I may be a bit behind the trend of wearing underwear-as-outerwear

especially if we hark back to Madonna donning lace everything in the 80s, but when you see a pretty lace-trim camisole top you just have to go with it, no?

I wore this as far back as Boxing Day (seems so long ago now) – we still like to dress smartly in our family the day after Christmas usually because we have more visitors coming over. And that’s as good an excuse as any for me to dress up a little. I’d bought the cami on a whim a few days earlier, and thought it would look pretty under my black blazer to give my outfit a bit of a masculine-feminine contrast.

As I was already in a wearing-black phase for the festive period, I paired the top/blazer combo with my kick flare trousers (on sale!) and comfy block heeled shoes. This style is the perfect shoe for party season… Wear them all day and you get very little heel ache (well I don’t, luckily).

SHOP THE LOOK:

Anyway I know this cami top is going to be perfect under my white cape – I think I saw a cape worn with a very similar black and white cami which is why I threw it into my virtual basket the second I saw it. Something to note about this top: It’s from the New Look Tall range – but it wasn’t too long for me (I’m 5’7″ and my torso is of average proportions), just in case you click through and are disappointed that it’s for tall people only.

But at this bargain price of £9.50 it’s worth a try…!

And finally: On Saturday I uploaded a brand new blog template, I hope you like the design! I’m so, so pleased with it – good old pipdig blog templates to the rescue once again.

And of course do add your outfits to this week’s link up and if you’ve added a link to here or my button to your post you may be featured next week!

#iwillwearwhatilike | Not Dressed As Lamb
Thank you for joining the #iwillwearwhatilike link up! This started as a campaign on Instagram in August 2015 where women over 30 wore everything on a journalist’s list of “inappropriate” items for 30+ women (including leopard print, short dresses and oversized sunglasses. Yes, really). It was so popular that I decided to carry it on weekly where women of all ages link up their fabulous style, never mind what anyone tells them not to wear!

The link up goes live every Monday at 3pm UK time and will stay open for a week. Whilst the original article was of course aimed at the 30+, you can be ANY age to link up. The only criteria is that you’re wearing whatever you damn well like!

Lovely and very balanced outfit. I love how you added the other colour trousers. Very nice look, but I will stay away from underwear/outerwear myself. Too many areas to hide haha.

Love this look, Catherine. And just now realized that I kind of stole your post title. Mine's called Of Underwear and Outerwear. It was unintentional. I'm going to go back and add a link to your post to mine…so I don't look like a total plagiarist.

Oh no Susan don't worry – nothing's completely original, anyway!! Thank you, glad you like the outfit x

Love your look Catherine! I have a drawer full of lace trimmed camisoles but none with a contrast like yours, so pretty! I have camisoles in every colour because I wear them as outerwear too. Usually with a jacket like you've shown or a shrug or cardigan. Sometimes with a duster, a shirt or a blouse worn open.

I wore a black lace trimmed camisole on New Year's Eve.

    Thank you for hosting!

Love the glasses! I used to love camisole tops and frocks back in the grunge-glam '90s. I loved teaming them with big boots and my dreadlocks.

Love the cami Catherine! I just recently stated wearing silk camisoles under whatever I wear. I love them- feels so luxurious and feminine, even if I'm in a sweatshirt. Thank you for the link up!

Catherine, I am an avid, "behind the trend" wearer. I don't intentionally wait, but if I can't find just the right thing for the right price I will wait until an item is on clearance before I buy it, which can mean, I miss out on the right trend time. But if it really is about women wearing what they want to wear, then it is also about wearing it when we want to wear it. So maybe we don't hit the trend spot on, but it will look just as fabulous on us a month or a year after the trend is over! It looks fabulous on you, lady! I love the combination of the white and black cami with the maroon colored trousers. Beautiful! – Amy

Love this look. However the bra situation always puts me off. I hate having bra straps in display but can't find a strapless one that works for me. Hope it's not TMI to ask how you get around this!

I love your new blog template. The look is very catchy – everything is right there and very easy to navigate. I also like under-wear as outer-wear. This cami is beautiful and as you say is a great foil for the masculine jacket. AND, the outdoor location is so open and airy and breathing. Aaaah. Love it. Thanks for hosting.

Such a pretty cami – perfect with the jacket and choker. I really like the black and burgundy combo, and the cropped trousers show off those wonderful shoes!

Love the pictures and the hair Catherine!!!! Hope you had a great time. And I love the way you styled it with the blazer. That is a cool contrast. Thank you for hosting. I got a lingerie spaghetti dress I love mixing with a plain turtleneck 🙂

Thanks for the linkup party Catherine. Love the camisole top and how you've styled it. Will definitely try it. Hope you have a lovely week. xo

It's lovely to have the excuse to keep things dressy over Christmas. We tend to be in PJ's by Boxing Day in our house! The lace cami is indeed the perfect ploy for this masculine jacket and I'm taking notes about those shoes as I've not tried that heel before. You look sleek and elegant in your undies my lovely!

I love a hint of lace, like you're wearing. I did that a lot in the 90s underneath suits and blazers, so it is a look that feels very comfortable for me. Girly, but not TOO girly. Sexy, but not TOO sexy. It is a perfect top, and so much smarter than a regular tank top. This one will be AMAZING under your white cape! Looking gorge, Mizz C xxx

I couldn't wear a camisole with my big boobs but you look fabulous.
A pretty camisole is so acceptable but I will never bow to the current trend of going out in pyjamas, dressing gown & slippers

Happy New Year Catherine! Back in the '90s I was wearing nighties and full petticoats all the time as outer-wear (Courtney Love eat your heart out) but nowadays I've got to be more careful of the light-reflecting properties of satin on my tummy bulge. Determined to be rocking the trend (better late than never) by summer though! You look fantastic in your outfit here by the way 🙂

twit twoo foxy lady.. LOVE this! you look great. And this cami would look so good layered over a roll neck too.. hmm maybe i should dabble with this trend . Thanks for hosting gorgeous lady, wishing you a great week xx

  22. 9 January 2017 / 4:34 pm

I love a cami under a blazer, cardi, etc! I love the sexiness and delicateness (is that a word?) it adds. Your cami will go with so much! I love your blog design also. It is clean, organized, easy to follow and full of inspiration and opportunity to learn! Peace! Cheryl Tucker

    • 9 January 2017 / 4:45 pm

Aww Cheryl thank you for the vote confidence in the new design!! It's as near to a custom-made design as I could get… It's got nearly everything I want!

And thank you, glad you love the cami too x

  23. 9 January 2017 / 4:28 pm

    I love the contrasting lace.

I have worn camisoles before on their own.

    bisous

I am liking this trend. I like how sometimes you see the underwear or camisole or petticoat worn with something long sleeved under. I might just have to pluck up the courage and go for it x

Yes I like that look too, Laurie! In fact I have my eye on the B&W two-in-one tops I linked in the cami tops picks…!! x

  25. 9 January 2017 / 3:36 pm

That is such a pretty camisole! I love the trim!

  26. 9 January 2017 / 3:27 pm

I adore little camisoles, but don't have any that fit well in my wardrobe at present. I am just getting into sewing so maybe I'll make one?! Ambitious! I love it peeking out of the jacket – such a classic look. xx

    • 9 January 2017 / 4:40 pm

Making one would be easy, Porcelina – a bit of lace trim onto any cami that fits right and Bob's your uncle!! Mine's quite fitted luckily so perfect for me…! Thanks hon x

  27. 9 January 2017 / 3:18 pm

Yes, yes, yes to putting your camisole on display, dearest Catherine…ESPECIALLY when it's as lovely as your new lace-trimmed version!! And as you know, black and white are always right in my books; but I've been working hard at mixing it up a little by throwing a third colour into my fave combination every once in a while, too…like you've done here with your chic cropped trousers!! P.S. So envious of your obviously mild UK temperatures right now; we're still in a (comparative!) deep-freeze here in Vancouver!! P.P.S. Two thumbs for the new Pipdig blog design!! XOXO

I do like the contrasting lace on this cami, Catherine!!
I'm totally behind on this trend too—but I'm just not sure I'm brave enough to try it!
