What It’s Like Being Married to a Fashion Blogger, by an Instagram Husband

What It's Like Being Married to a Fashion Blogger, by an Instagram Husband

“Good things come to those who wait”… True? I think so.

I’ve vicariously observed the growth of Catherine’s blog as an ‘Instagram Husband’ over the past few years and seen how she has nurtured it from a small side interest created to steal her away from the humdrum toil of a 9-5 office job into making the decision to “dive in at the deep end” and go full-time on the same venture.

Oh, how I remember the day when she confidently strode down the stairs to tell me that this is what she wanted to do with her life from now on… How we cheered HUZZAH and slapped each other’s backs, danced a little jig and dismissed all our financial worries as mere trivia.

On the 5th blogiversary of Not Dressed As Lamb (and CATHERINE’S BIRTHDAY IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW) I’m taking over at the helm… tapping the keys to make “words” if you will. Settle back and have a cuppa, for you are going to hear the naked truth of what it’s like to be married to a fashion blogger!

As glamorous as it may seem, there is a huge amount of effort that goes into creating what Catherine wants to present on her blog… I get up, go to work all day, come home tired and probably ever so slightly grouchy. Sometimes I even get to have a cup of tea before we’re charging off to catch the best light at one of our photo spots. This does mean that at some point I’m going to be standing in the way of someone who wants to get past (with camera in hand) and Catherine has to do that rapid flapping motion with her hand to get me to move to one side)!!!!

Come to think of it, my memories of taking pictures are mostly what the “outtakes” posted at the end of the year look like.

Ultimately, it’s the effusive mien by which Catherine works so hard that makes me proud and happy with her chosen profession. I love taking her pictures, I get a kick out of that one shot that captures the moment that tells the story of the outfit and I know that our marriage is safe for another day!

But it can be a lonely existence, I have always felt that Catherine needed something more. For all that social media has to offer, it is still indefinite. A construct designed to bring people closer together by keeping them apart, but then something happened…

The world of Catherine and me became Catherine and her girl squad, the missing piece of the puzzle for us both! I’ve never seen her happier. More often than not I hear a ping on her phone followed by an exuberant guffaw at what one of the girls has said in their WhatsApp group… and these aren’t just friends on the inter-web, they meet and talk about real things, have real conversations and have formed a bond that was absent from everything before.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of these stunning ladies and I am overwhelmed by their affection and generosity. Some have blogger husbands too. Just don’t leave your camera in my care or else…

These chaps (like me) are in it because it makes our partners happy, it’s the reason we don a camera and scuttle about side streets and pathways.

So, I find myself inspired by the strength and the commitment that these ladies have forged together and know that for all the years that I have spent capturing “on camera” the details of Catherine’s development as a fashion blogger, the future is as bright as can be.

So it’s true to say “Good things come to those who wait”.

What does the future have in store for me? Who knows, one thing is certain, I’ll be there, camera in hand, “cocked and ready” looking for the right shot, making the tea when we get home, being a shoulder to cry on when a scheduled post gets published by mistake and just being… me.

I am an Instagram Husband and this is my story!

Thanks for sharing your unique perspective. Thus far it is my daughter who takes my pictures and I have to schedule a “session”, but I have a camera on the way (my hubby’s anniversary gift to me) and when we talked to my daughter about what to get, I told her it had to be one her dad could operate…so he might be joining the ranks soon!

I love this post. My husband have a similar dynamic. While we are always supportive of each other creatively, I appreciate his patience when I start directing him on what kind of shots I want. He IS an artist! Thanks.

Just found this post, so happy belated birthday and blogiversary! The thing I loved the most about this post was Keith mentioning that something had been missing in Catherine's life and was found when she found her other bloggers. Blogging is very solitary (as are so many other jobs) and to find the support of other women is so important. We women need each other as support in all aspects of life. Bravo Catherine for finding your support who sound like lots of fun too!

Thank you, Keith, for your great story. I'm new to blogging and am constantly inspired by the wonderful women I'm meeting and sharing life stories with, including loving reading Catherine's stories. I also have a wonderful husband who now accompanies me on photographic adventures and is very happy to do so.
Happy Birthday, Catherine and congratulations on taking that big leap to full time blogging and for your success. Best wishes for your continued happiness and success.

Keith, you are a great husband, helpful, supportive, understanding. If all men were like you, imagine how much more we would be able to contribute to the world over the last 20 centuries, lol. Happy Birthday and many more, Catherine

Hahahahaha!!! My man swears he has his tale to tell, but I'm not letting him anywhere near my keyboard. He and Eve. They're my comrades in arms, equal parts IG husband/bestie, for a myriad of reasons. I loved this, Catherine, "your" best post ever.

What a good idea to have your husband write this post. He did a very good job. The post is oozing love. I know you had a perfect birthday with lovely presents (beautiful skirt and jacket, cannot wait to see it on you).
I said happy birthday to you somewhere (twitter?)
    Please continue the good work.

What a beautiful post! I am so happy that Catherine has found her calling and happy birthday and blogiversary to her! I only hope for that day when my husband is as supportive. While we do have a few minutes of fun on the occasion when I enlist him as photographer and he has come up with some interesting blog posts for sure…I think he still gets a little angry at the time and money spent with no monetary rewards. He has yet to see how I have found "my thing" that I have been craving outside of just being a mom and an Army wife. But as you have said, good things come to those who wait…so hopefully soon…

Thanks for giving me that glimmer of hope!

It's wonderful to hear from you again, dear Keith…I've missed the Silver Londoner, and I know that Robin (my own Instagram husband!) has missed you, too!! Oh my gosh – when I started my blog just about three years ago, I convinced Robin that it would be "no big deal"…we'd take my iPad along when we were out and about and shoot some outfit pics along the way. Well, two camera upgrades and THOUSANDS of photos later, I think Robin has realized that it actually IS a bit of a "big deal!!" 😉 The occasional grumpiness you mention is all too familiar to me; but truthfully, I couldn't ask for a better partner here in the blogosphere…and I know that Catherine feels exactly the same way about you!! 😀 P.S. Please pass along my very best wishes to the Birthday Girl…she certainly deserves it!!

What an absolutely brilliant post, Keith! God, you totally hit the nail on the head with your assessment of social media being a 'construct designed to bring people together by keeping them apart'. That is so wise and so true.

Your photography is amazing, and you should be proud of your SERIOUS skillz as an Instagram husband. Maybe you could do a workshop? Teach my Instagram husband a thing or two? Get the workshop sponsored by Canon or Nikon and have a nice lads weekend in a swanky hotel?! ;-D

Thank you for sharing your Catherine with us; I know we take up a lot of her time, but we are so grateful to have her in our girl squad. She is a lionhearted beauty who makes us laugh and teaches us something new nearly every day, so thank you for being so understanding at the constant ping of WhatsApp! You two are just the loveliest couple ever. xx

Happy Birthday and Blogversary Catherine x This was a lovely post by Keith. And what would we do without our other halves support ? The odd moan and groan (apparently my blog gets all the attention! ) Like Kith says "if it makes us happy" and it shows here how proud he is of you xx

Wonderful post, and you two are such a gorgeous, stylish couple! You are proud of each other, and it shows, in the best way. xox

Congratulations to Catherine on both birthday and 5 years of blogging. Thank you too Keith for taking up the helm even if only for a brief spell that she may take some time off. It's only once you start to blog yourself that you realise the hard work and commitment involved. Catherine does so much more than run an ordinary blog like the rest of us. She provides a massive information service, a go-to site for anyone needing to know anything, yes ANYTHING, about fashion blogging and all its pitfalls. She's the big sister that we all refer to when we're stumped, confused or just plain ignorant about a certain aspect of blogging. Without her advice and support, my blog would have floundered very early on. I refer to her pages, and the huge backlog of advice time after time, safe in the knowledge that if anyone will know the answer, it'll be Catherine.
Keith, you must be so proud of all that she has acheived over the past five years, and I expect Catherine will be saying that without your support she couldn't have done it. You're clearly a dynamic duo and I'm delighted for you both. Hurrah and break out the bubbles!

Very nice to hear from you Keith. Enjoyed the post, and so nice to hear the support and joy in participating and taking photos for Catherines blog. I am lucky as well as hubby is also my photographer who enjoys taking pictures for my blog. Happy Birthday my friend Catherine and congrats to a successful 5 years of blogging!!!

Happy birthday and happy anniversary Catherine!
Keith, what a wonderful read. While I am Instagram husbandless (husbandless in general) I watch my brother in law who is an Instagram husband while my sister does the dance between work, kids and her kids interiors blog.
Its lovely to see such wonderful support and I truly admire those with strong visual talents.

Funny timing…because I just had my husband watch the you-tube "instagram husband" and he had tears rolling down his face! It's so funny because it's so true!
And my husband would echo every sentiment you've presented here!! We are lucky women to have men like you!

Thank you so much, Keith, for this brilliant post. Yes, that's us (hope you won't get jealous because of the constant "pings" on C's phone…!!) and the #girlsquad can't wait to meet you in person.

As you may know, Catherine's blog has been the first I have ever followed (before I started blogging myself) and surely one of the first on Instagram too.
From the very beginning I have admired her incredible knowledge on everything blog and social media related and even more her kindness and generosity in sharing it with other bloggers (plus her sense of humour!)

Thank you, Keith for supporting her and Catherine, for supporting me!
Happy Birthday and enjoy your weekend trip.

What a brilliant post!! If my husband was any good at writing (!), he'd probably write a very similar post to this. Occasionally I'll post a picture of him so he doesn't feel left out lol 😉
