How to Wear Yellow | With Black, White and Orange #iwillwearwhatilike

Yellow duster coat with black, orange and white Adidas Stan Smiths | Not Dressed As Lamb

This week’s #iwillwearwhatilike theme is yellow – not an easy colour to pull off but I adore it.

Of course I’m drawn to anything bright, and in the winter I wore this yellow coat with aubergine and lilac, so I went a little simpler this time. Black and white really showed off the yellow, and another punch of warm colour from the orange tote bag tied it together.

I can remember wearing black and yellow to a wedding in the mid 1980s in my teens: A black roll neck and black bolero jacket(!) with a full yellow and black polka dot skirt. And probably a yellow ribbon in my ponytail. I seem to remember the 50s having a big influence on fashions at the time (I guess it’s what you’d call the Back to the Future effect) – I find it amazing that I remember so distinctly things I wore on certain occasions 30 years ago yet I can’t recall what I did yesterday.

My love of the colour yellow extends into summer dresses – one of my favourite dresses ever is my yellow Grace Kelly-style dress which I can’t wait to wear again once the weather’s much warmer. If I had to choose just one colour to wear in dresses, it’d be yellow. (Blame that one on Sandy’s dress in Grease.)

However the star of this show is undoubtedly that yellow umbrella – sadly no longer available, I’ll be honest and say I bought it a couple of years ago because I thought it would look good in outfit photos (and keep the rain off). It’s never appeared on the blog because it either hasn’t rained or I’d forgotten to take it when I did need it. It’s by Fulton but I’m pretty sure it was an Orla Kiely pattern, so Orla Kiely + yellow + umbrella = no brainer for me. And what better time to showcase it for the first time than when the theme is yellow…?!

So get linking up your yellow clothes, shoes or accessories – and everything else too of course (the theme is optional). You may be featured next week if you’ve linked up something yellow though – and don’t forget to add a link please to be kind (and to be featured)!

ARE YOU A YELLOW FAN – IF SO, WHAT TYPE OF YELLOW (LEMON, SUNSHINE, MUSTARD)? AND CAN YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU WORE ON PARTICULAR OCCASIONS FROM YEARS AGO LIKE ME…? TELL ME IN THE COMMENTS!

Looks amazing & I love the umbrella. I'm very pale and I'm not sure yellow is the best colour on me personally, but I do always think it is a colour that can look so fantastic when people wear it. #brilliantblogposts

Alright Catherine I'm sure you can guess what I'm going to say but WOW! I love this outfit so. Orange and yellow are both two of my favorite colors and I feel like people are always so scared to take a risk and mix them together. I love this combination — such a unique combination for spring and so very YOU!

You suit every colour in the rainbow-literally and are GLOWING here which fits being yellow. I love yellow and my Aunt chose the most amazing canary yellow as a bridesmaid dress for her wedding in Marbella years ago that I loved x

Thank you Vicki – yellow dresses are my faaaaaaaavourite so that bridesmaid dress would have been right up my street too!

White, black, yellow and… orange! Like it very much, especially the bag 🙂 I think you should make a post regarding your bags some day. You have a really special collection!

    • 14 April 2016 / 8:59 am

I'd not thought of that before, maybe I will! Thank you x

Big thumbs up for yellow, from me Catherine!
Although, my blue skin has to be careful with it…I still like to go bold.
Sunshine and a bright yellow sundress is what I need just now!
I understand other people's reservations when it comes to this hue…yellow is a hard colour for a lot of people to wear, because it can make the skin look jaundiced (not a great look) or teeth and eyes look yellow.

Your outfit today is bold and brilliantly simple…great colours, clean lines and that orange bag is THE most versatile item ever!
    Who would have thought it?
Perfect with your hair….and that "blogging brolly" is a winner too!

My favorite shade of yellow is sunshine, it always makes me feel so cherry. What's your secret to wearing white shoes on a rainy day no less and keep them in tip top shape?

Love the coat and the shade is so pretty on you Catherine! I can't wear yellow near my face although I do make an exception for my mom's bright yellow cardi from the 70's that I bust out on occasion.

Love this look on you! Yellow is such a great color for spring and summer. I've only recently started wearing it because it is not often thought of as everyone's color, but anyone can carry a yellow bag, or have yellow pants or shoes, or yellow beads or bracelets. It's the perfect pop of happy! Thanks for posting. – Amy –

I recently bought a yellow top for spring but I haven't worn it yet because the weather has been to cool. I love your coat! And your umbrella. I totally understand how you would buy it for a photo shoot…I do that with hats!

Oh my,I came back because I wanted to say how much I love your haircut Catherine! Although I already linked up I didn't see that you featured my outfit from last week with the mustard trench. Thanks so much. I love mustard and yellow! Love, Kirsten xx

Yellow is a tough color to wear and you did it beautifully. The umbrella is so eyecatching and fun it almost makes you not mind the rain so much.

Sadly I have a love hate relationship with yellow so I don't wear much of it as a colour. Too lemony and I look ill – just doesn't work with my colouring but soft yellows I can just about get away with so you've inspired me to try and bring more yellow into my life!
You look great in yellow, especially with the tote adding another pop of warm colour. And that umbrella needs to get out more! What a stunning pattern.

Catherine I'm with you on that loving yellow theme this week. I remember in my teens owning a yellow maxi dress with a ruched top and puffy short sleeves. I wore it to my sister's wedding reception, danced all night and thought I was the cat's pyjamas! Thanks again for your link up party. Your yellow coat is fab, as is that brolly – what a great match that is!

Catherine, your hair is looking so pretty lately, the fringe is lush on you. I wear little yellow actually, but wouldn't mind a little more in my wardrobe. Xx

  25. 4 April 2016 / 5:29 pm

I LOVE yellow. I have a yellow car, a yellow phone and two yellow handbags as well as the shoes I'm wearing in the post I've linked up. Such a happy hue. Like you, I can recall what I wore on all sorts of occasions and during happy times and sad. It's strange isn't it how evocative an outfit can be. You look gorgeous in your yellow. I love the coat and think every one of these pictures is fabulous. Thank you for hosting lovely lady xxxxx

I love the bright colors on you. We have certainly seen enough rain here, need some sun, and your yellow coat and pretty umbrella are perfect for putting someone in a good mood. Love your hair pulled back with the little pouf, I need to think of some alternatives when it gets warm.

I LOVE yellow and, yes, you are too right – that umbrella is a fantastic prop! So funny that you have been thwarted from using it. But that's a good thing too. Great outfit. Thanks for the linkup.

Yellow is one of my favs, and I love that umbrella! 🙂

  30. 4 April 2016 / 4:05 pm

I love yellow! It's one of my favourite colours, not so much the mustard variety but bright and pale lemons are just divine. I must say I LOVE your hairdo here – that fringe actually makes you look even younger!

I adore yellow, but I don't wear it well. It is always AMAZING on you, Catherine. I keep trying different yellows though.. one day I'll find one that works!

That umbrella was meant for you; it is GORGEOUS and so unique! I think a fancy umbrella makes rainy days a little more bearable… and stylish!

Thank you so much for including me in your featured favourites from last week; I'm so pleased you liked my bonkers outfit! 🙂 xx

  33. 4 April 2016 / 3:08 pm

I'm a huge yellow fan—in fact, a friend just said to me that we need an intervention! (it may stem from my mother—she has a yellow kitchen)!
On a side note since you're so experienced—how would you take pix in the rain—I mean the umbrella protects you the subject, but how to protect the camera? (probably a very stupid and naive question—but i just can't get my head around it?) jodie

five years ago I bought a bright (almost) neon yellow cardigan from H&M…needless to say it was an absolute hit with everyone who saw it as it brightened up my complexion so much!

  35. 4 April 2016 / 2:36 pm

Dearest Catherine – I always feel a little "greedy" when I link up two outfits…but of course I simply HAD to include my outfit from last Friday because it featured my fave mustard yellow cardigan!! 😉 And YOUR cheerful yellow coat and umbrella combo (oh my gosh, I luuuv that umbrella!) is such a great way to add some sunshine to an otherwise gloomy day…you're practically glowing in these photos!! I love yellow, too, but it's really hard for me to wear it. I was happy when I found the bright yellow bandana. I think it works with the blue polka dot blouse, and I can get away with it…

Great coat! And I love the umbrella! A fun umbrella makes a rainy day so much better!

  37. 4 April 2016 / 2:23 pm

Yes, yellow is a good volour on a rainy day. i actually have a yellow raincoat. I remember when I was little, everybody had yellow rain coats. It had something to do with visibility, if you go hiking or something, you can be seen from far away…

  38. 4 April 2016 / 2:23 pm

I do not know if it is the yellow or your hair style today, but you look like no older than sweet 15, dear Catherine.
