Styling a Camel Cape | With a Sweater Dress and Black Boots

Some of you may remember when I first featured this Windsmoor camel cape back in October – it hadn’t really got cold then, plus I even photographed it before we went on our summer holiday

Now the temperatures have dropped enough to warrant a big wool cape I thought it was time (last weekend) to style it up again in a different way.

Comfort is key for me at the moment with my bad leg (and for those of you who kindly keep asking – thank you for all the good wishes! I’m well on the road to recovery, the pain is now minimal and I’m walking almost normally). So skinnies are out, as is anything that presses on the back of my leg – opaque tights are my new best friend. A sweater dress I last featured on the blog a year ago and some thick, good quality opaques with a perfect mid-heel black boot were super-comfy but kept me nice and warm.

COMFORT IS KEY FOR ME AT THE MOMENT WITH MY BAD LEG SO TIGHT SKINNIES ARE OUT, AS IS ANYTHING THAT RUBS THE BACK OF MY LEG. 
OPAQUE TIGHTS ARE MY NEW BEST FRIEND.

I know it makes me sound kind of old lady-ish (comfy thick tights! A nice low heel! Nothing that rubs!) but I tell you, for someone who is normally an active person this back/leg injury has been a real wake-up call for me. I will never again take for granted a healthy, working body that is able to run, jump about and generally keep fit. I will never again sit on the sofa eating cakes because I’m “just too tired” to work out or even go for a brisk walk.

Having a healthy body – and looking after it – is something I’m going to be addressing much more in the months to come once I’m fully recovered. I’ve always wanted to do more health and fitness posts, and now my eyes have been opened to how I’ve been making too many excuses and having too much of a passive attitude towards my fitness. I hope you’ll join me…!

    Catherine, I just conducted a hearty search to find out what has happened to your leg. Somehow I was linked to a photography post–I did learn a ton, mainly that I just need to bring a roll of white butcher paper home. Duh!!

    Anyway, I hear ya Sister. I'm over 4 months out from my very extensive hip surgery this last fall. I just want the pain to go away. That doesn't seem like so much to ask! Anyway, I've gottne to a point where I'm just going to start walking regularly anyway. I walked on Saturday, Sunday, and now I will walk today!

      Oh Ann apologies – I should have linked to the first post where I mentioned it, I've done that now in the copy of the post! I was worried about banging on about it too much and kinda "skimmed" over the bad leg thing (it's sciatica from a slipped disc). It's so frustrating, isn't it – both you and Monika of My Style Pudding know what's like, we've all suffered some sort of injury/operation in the last few months…!

      Glad to hear you're walking – I went for my first walk in 8 weeks+ this morning after being given the go-ahead by the physio yesterday. It was freeeeeezing cold but lovely and sunny, and oh! the joy of going outside and getting some fresh air was wonderful!! Thank you for the lovely comments and love sent my way as always xx

    You may be wearing characteristically "granny" items, but you certainly look young & whippersnappyish!! Of course being pain free is more important than anything, but this outfit in itself, is a great example of how you can still look fantastic, even when you have to make adjustments! It's perfect, and I want all "grannies" to wear something just like it! jodie

      Thanks Joanne, though I don't think I'm being hard on myself per se, just the realisation that you shouldn't take your health for granted, which I think I did before…! My exercise regime was always a little bit erratic, and I'll be changing my whole mindset towards it now 🙂

    Great to see you up and about. I'm not a big health and fitness girl. I walk a lot but that's as far as my exercise routine goes. I eat quite healthy, I think, but I cannot stay away from junk food. My biggest challenge for this year is to drink more water. I am looking forward to your health and fitness tips though, to read and hopefully put into practice, haha!

    Of course your outfit is elegant and beautifully styled….but the part of this post that really inspired me was when you were talking about taking health and fitness for granted. And, the awful realisation that health is not a given….fitness can be lost….and our bodies can be damaged which seriously impacts on our lives….not to mention our style choices!
    I am completely in support of any health and fitness posts you do, and I hope you put one out soon as I am in serious need of some inspiration to get "Up and at them!".
    My great granny once told me that "Without your health you have nothing"….as a child I had no idea of what she meant, but as an adult I really appreciate her words. She lived to be 101, her mind as sharp as a tack, but she was trapped in a broken body. Blind, unable to walk, in constant pain.
    I am determined to listen to her words and despite being very busy with work, family, children and blogs, I hope to get a little healthier this year.
    I am not going crazy for diets or hardcore fitness (goodness knows I love my chocolate and pastries and I'm not giving them up, ever) but I want to move more, drink more water and eat more veg.
    Good luck with getting your body back into top working order.

      You sound like a woman after my own heart, Samantha, where your general health and fitness is concerned! I too like my cakes and things – I already eat very healthily but my problem is that I eat the naughty stuff on top. It's amazing how having this happen to me may have been a blessing in disguise… I HAVE to see the positive in it!

      So yes, look out for more health and fitness posts, I'm going to be writing verrrrrry enthusiastically about it…! Thanks my lovely xx

    OH WOW! I freakin' love this outfit Catherine.In-fact I want to steal it and run away with it! The whole look is fantastic from head to toe, and i'm really digging this length dress with thick tights and ankle boots on you, it feels different if you know what i mean? The cape is the perfect finish to the outfit of course, giving a swinging feel to a fairly fitted dress means they really work in harmony together.. You really have struck gold with this outfit my lovely! happy friday to you!!XX

      Hehe thank you Rachel sweetie – it's quite a "you" dress more than a "me" dress, but oh boy it's so much easier to wear than fit n flare ones right now!! Saying that, though, I am so much better and can actually walk around without looking stupid, so it's a minor miracle. So glad you liked the outfit…!!
