How to Style The Classic Windsmoor Camel Cape | With Double Denim

Taupe wool cape with denim jacket and flared jeans
We’re now well into October so I guess autumn really is here – what better time to showcase a stunning wool cape in preparation for those chillier temperatures?

This cape is by Windsmoor – a long-established British brand known for its elegant outerwear – who have, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head with this classic, timeless piece as part of their AW15 collection. It’s made of the softest wool in a colour described as camel (though I think it’s more of a cool taupe than a warm beige), and it’s trimmed with black so it pretty much goes with everything.

The beauty of a cape is that you can just throw it over the top of any outfit and head straight out the door. Unlike a winter coat, it works brilliantly over another jacket without adding bulk. With that in mind, I thought about styling it in a way that would contrast its classic Britishness, so I went with double denim: I buttoned the jacket right up to the neck and added this year’s jean shape, the high-waisted flare. It’s a rather unexpected combination, but as you may well know I’m all about the unexpected. The striped bowling bag and classic red lips add a dash of colour without detracting from the classic-elegance-meets-modern-denim feel of the outfit.

I also love the faux-leather trim and (asymmetric) fasteners with silver studs – somehow the outfit demanded cat eye sunglasses and minimalist earrings which I thought worked beautifully to finish off the air of continental sophistication it gives off. It may be from a timeless British brand but this cape screams “Paris in winter” to me. Maybe I should go for a long weekend just to show it off…?!

(The cape has actually been chosen as Coatwalk’s “Coat of the Season” – a fact I found out after choosing it from Windsmoor’s collection. I must be more in-tune with trends that I thought…!)

What pieces are looking forward to wearing this season? And if you own a classic cape, how do you like to style it? Do share in the comments!

    Love love this look. There are so many things to try: the double jacket (denim and cape), the bootleg denim. The pop of color in your nails and denim. I have a confession, when you invited me to do your link up, I had absolutely no idea what that entailed…will have a go now, I think.

    Love a good cape, me. Or cloak. They're so dramatic! I've got a chocolate brown wool cape/ jacket hybrid from Monsoon a couple of years ago. Sadly it's starting to show its age so I'll keep my eye out for another autumny-type jacket thing.

    Also, you've reminded me that I really want a denim or tencel shirt. Gap had nice ones that were a bit pricey, I thought. Strangely ('cos I don't normally like them), Next seemed to have some nice denim shirts. Your blog is very good at stirring up the shopping vibes in me!

    While I love just about everything (even the green nails!), the item I love most about this look is the pair of jeans you're wearing. They look amazing on you! Tall and lean that's you Catherine!!

    Chic and Fabulous!
    This cape could have easily entered the gates of frumpsville…had it been in less talented hands!
    The double denim makes it modern and fresh…and the little unexpected touches work so beautifully. I love your green nails and firehose bag.
    I recently wore my Tartan cape (coincidently, with double denim…although my double act were skinnies and a gilet). I think capes can look pretty awful but can also look fantastic. They are (IMO) not a 'throw on' item…they need just a little more thought…for example handbag choices, footwear, volume of the other items worn.
    Of course you have all this nailed (as usual).
    I really must look into more Cape purchases……{Mr mastercard groans}
