So – how do you jazz up an otherwise practical-but-dull outfit for shopping on a rainy autumnal day? Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise! I have to admit I was having a “can’t be bothered to get dressed up” kind of morning when I had to pop into town to run some errands the day I wore this, so initially I just went with the nearest sweatshirt, jeans and comfy booties and grabbed my trench coat from the hook by the front door.
But just as I was leaving the house the style blogger in me whispered in my ear, saying “You need a hat, girl”. And I have to admit I feel almost naked these days without a hat, so while I still had time I ran upstairs to grab my trusty leopard print trilby. Feeling better. Then I wondered if it was cold enough to need a scarf, so it was back upstairs to check the outside temperature (we have an outdoor thermometer thingy indoors, if you get me) and it wasn’t cold enough to warrant a scarf, but by that time I’d felt the urge to pick one out anyway. It was while I was contemplating the temperature that my eyes fell on my pile of hats and accessories on my dressing table and straight to the gold sequinned collar I hadn’t worn for ages. That was the finishing touch I needed.
Except when I checked my appearance one final time in the mirror by the front door (you can’t tell me you don’t do that too) the collar had twisted round, so it was upstairs again for a safety pin to hold it in place. Instead I had the brainwave of simply using a brooch with a pin back (like a stud) which did the job beautifully.
So – hat on, collar on, collar fixed in place. Back upstairs again to get the camera as it now seemed a blog-worthy outfit. And it gave me the chance to grab my yellow tote for a bit of colour; I could switch the contents over in the car from the other bag I was using (don’t worry I was the passenger, not the driver). Only half an hour late leaving in the end – that’s quite good going for me…!
How about you – do you make a million last minute changes to your outfit before leaving the house (and does it make you constantly late like me)…?!

Your last minute accessorizing was brilliant. I adore the collar and brooch! And I too feel naked without a hat. Your leopard print trilby is a beauty.
Thank you so much for linking up with Hat Attack!
Great combo. I am saving this to my inspiration folder. Love the rings by the way too.

Love the yellow bag! I am on the hunt for one myself – what a fun pop to fall outfits.

Catherine I love this post… and how you 'built' your outfit. How refreshing also to know… you too, have… "can't be bothered to get dressed up mornings"! Your accessories are masterfully used as always! Kudos to you my dear!
Yellow and animal print are an instant booster to any outfit and you are rocking it with yours. Great! Sara
Great look Catherine, I love the splash of colour! 🙂

Catherine I love that you are able to take a sweater, skinny jeans and a trench coat and then with a few genius touches you manage to transform these fairly casual classic staples into such a fabulous and chic outfit!
I'm often late because of a few last minute adjustments to an outfit! And the amount of times I haven't planned on doing outfit pictures but then a scarf, bracelet and some sunglasses later that all changes! 🙂
Take care,
