A Modern Take On 1950s Style | Blue Pleated Skirt & Vintage Sunglasses

I love many retro styles, and often buy vintage pieces (especially dresses), but the 1950s is one of the easiest retro styles to emulate without the need for actual vintage pieces. This was one of those outfits that ended up being a little bit 1940s/50s – which was not my intention – but I went with it in the end and ended up with a lovely feminine, comfy outfit just right for a day running errands (and twirling πŸ˜‰

I’m still loving all the pleated skirts around at the moment [will retailers please stop making them in every colour under the sun?!!], so I wore my new blue pleated skirt from Asos with an old favourite floral shirt. As soon as I added a jade-green cardigan for the chilly evening (which needed knotting simply because it was too long), I immediately thought “hmm, extra out of Grease”. When these unintentionally themed outfits happen, sometimes I go with them, sometimes I don’t… this time I did. Short of adding white ankle socks and a ponytail, I did add a land girls-style headscarf, my vintage orange sunnies (1970s?) and my Sperry’s.

So unless you are able/want to pull off the total look from a particular era, I’d recommend you mix up the eras just a little bit if you want to simply get a retro vibe. I currently have a full-on 1950s vintage dress waiting to be worn (see it on Facebook here), so I know there’s no getting round the era I’ll be emulating with that one. However, the way I wear it means I’d probably go with straightened hair (so not very 1950s) and shoes… not sure yet.

Any suggestions for styling my new vintage dress I’ve mentioned? And are any of you big fans of 1950s style – let me know in the comments!

I love how this retro inspired outfit looks so perfectly modern! I never wear that length of skirt with flats in fear of looking stumpy…but you look perfect!
